I'm with Kathy.

Nokia will ship as soon as they can ship. And there's nothing any of us can do to change that.

Patience, my friends.

Re: N900 shipping today (9th Nov) according to Nokia Online UK

This thread needs a big fat DELETE!

Seriously, another thread claiming factual information that, like all the previous threads, turns out be incorrect. There should be an outright ban on starting "N900 is shipping on X" threads until Nokia release the official press release confirming once and for all the REAL shipping date.

hmmmmm, patience is a virtue, but a little bit of transparency from Nokia is still preferred. Not sure how does their marketing guys justify their heafty pay packages

Well we did have a thread you were only allowed to post in if your n900 had shipped. And then one you could post in, so as not to discriminate. And then it all got faintly silly.

Basically, the locals round here are like addicts without their methadone. People are crawling up the walls, whimpering, shaking and becoming faintly psychotic.

I'd say this one could safely be merged into the Big Thread... there'll be another one of these along on the 16th, the 19th, the 29th...

You gotta give me my prescription. NOW

Pretty much, I understand why there's a delay but I would like to get a rough estimate and a hint as to what's causing the delay. Rather than just being left in the dark.

If I was a more spiteful person I'd recommend people away from Nokia products in the future. =P

Then again...you yourself do seem to post multiple times in most all of those threads.

They have been as transparent as they can. You are assuming that they know exactly when they will complete whatever sudden new demand Dr Jaaksi placed on them. I suspect they are working flat out for a 'final frontier' firmware for release... and don't actually know when it will be done.

The trouble is, given the way rumours go round here, if they said "We realised there was a problem with the gobbryfux, so wanted to fix that before release" there'd be 150 reviews, tweets, posts all saying " OMG n900 is crap - it has a fault in the gobbryfux!!" So they keep their problems to themselves. That not bad marketing, but rather best possible, under the circumstances.

It would be lovely to live in a world where people like Nokia could be straight with their customers. But this isn't such a world. This is the Internet, land of gossip, rumour, damned lies and release dates.

You have a 'rough estimate' - November!

What I would like is a Maemo 5 release tracker bug in bugzilla, dependent on all the real bugs that are blocking the release, actual development in public, and frequent interim releases for testers. That's how a community OS does things.

Re: N900 shipping delayed

I agree - its not the delayed delivery that's upsetting me but the lack of CLEAR & CONCISE communication from Nokia - which is non existent and if we are lucky to get some then its very very vague and gets changed again!

I vowed not to buy a nokia phone some 3&1/2 years back, till the time I came to know about N900 and placed my pre-order via amazon. Seems like things didnt changed much since then apart from them having a winner in their kitty this time around. :(

I think the problem is that Nokia tries to market itself as open source, but part of being open source is just being open in general. Being transparent about bugs, issues, and involving the community if possible (through bug reports, suggestions, whatever).

RenegadeFanboy 2009-11-09 18:24

Re: N900 shipping delayed

I'm almost positively sure that maybe Nokia is waiting for the 2,000,001th preorder to come in, so they can make a helluva press release claming a record.

I'm totally certain of the above, because my source proved to have a 100% track record for forecasts like this.

So, all the pre-order cancellers, get back on board this instant! We need you!

rfb

Ps.: after seeing this thread going bananas over the weekend, I've sent a tweet to Peter, that the press release should just say: "Yes, UK. We are shipping the Nokia N900 now." - and then all hell breaks loose.

Yes, I've seen your anti-Google posts. Often avoiding answering follow-up questions as you seem to favor rumors and personal bias more than facts. Your posts are now to the point of 'trolling' and regurgitation so I'm adding you to my ignore list to atleast filter that noise out. Like they did last month " End October", and will like to check back to see your response if its changed to " End December" sometime in early december.

At least they owe to reach out to people who pre-ordered with some tentative timelines if not reasons for delay.

1) Android does not give you privileged user access (there are ways to break the lock, but it is an 'illegal' procedure)
2) You must have a Google account.
3) You must develop in Java, for their specific virtual machine

I am sure points 2 and 3 will be bypassed by creative individuals, sooner or later, as point 1 has been bypassed. But those limits should never have been there in the first place. If people want to keep their personal data in Google's computers, this is fine for me, but it should not be compulsory. I for one prefer to manage my own mail at home.

Looks like either MPD were correct in stating the 16th and exclusive dispatch (alongside the nokia store,) or the MPD shippings will now be delayed another few days :(

1. Root access is not 'illegal' for Android, nor is it for the iPhone.
2. You do not need a Google account on many roms.
3. You can also develop in C, C++, Python, and Lua.

They don't actually owe anyone anything. They're just screwing up when it comes to the spirit of open source. And that's what's causing the ill feelings.

given that the date for the n900 meetup for some cities was announced much later than the US ones, with the London one being the 17th, I suspect that the actual date the device will be shipped out will be the 16th or 17th, so that people going to the London flagship store will be able to buy one of them (except the lucky winner of a device who will be able to leave with his/her device*) as this has shown to cause disappointment at the other meetups.

Strangely this matches the MPD shipping date... conspiracy! MPD delayed the phone so they could be 'exclusive'

i would not read too much into the meet ups having any relevance on the shipping date.
the n900 is a month late so originally these meet ups would of been after the n900 shipped, its only b/c n900 is late they've ended up being few week's before shipping

Funny that you mention that. Because thats what im actually doing, my friend wanted to pre-order a N900 today, i told him:

"if you don't want to be treated with respect, if you don't want it to ship when they tell you to, if you want to hang around forums all day long and wait for some release news, if want to be fooled by the company with fake release dates, then N900 is the phone for you. Otherwise just go with and android."

And thats what he did. Went with an andriod phone.
You have my word lads, as soon as i hear of a phone that has the same specs as n900, i will cancel asap, i don't even care if its not released yet.

And who added viagra to the tags?.. wth man?, you did make laugh thou.

Re: N900 shipping delayed

How do you claim to know if Nokia can be more transparent or not?

And the word from Peter was no more official than what was said at the Meetups, the only thing official is a press release. I said the word from people who should know, and they were not sales people.

As people have said, an Open community is driven CRAZY by a lack of information, its just in the nature of people who are drawn to this kind of thing. Those people want to know everything they can.

Here is a product where pre-orders started sept of 08, and delays have put it back a year, and they have been OPEN about it.... and not only has it not caused a ton of bad press, but they had to DOUBLE the number of devices for their first run:

http://openpandora.org/index.php?opt...mid=13&lang=en

(look, pre-orders a year ago, and it has been updated more recently than anything Nokia has told us, Nov 2)

Obviously this is not an entirely fair comparison, as its a group of people making this device, and a multi national corp making the N900.... Nokia is rooted in their old ways, but if they want success in an open community, they should start moving in that direction.

Also, at no point did I say it would be a good idea to bother c-levels at Nokia, I posited some ideas if people wanted to take an active roll.... I was mostly trying to make a point that complaining in the forum wont really help... I know no one is going to try those things, thats the point. Unless you commit yourself to one of those extreme measures, there is nothing you can do.

I certainly agree that it is out when it is out, and they probably do not even know the release date yet, but there is a lot they do know, that could put a lot of pre-order customers at ease (or not, depending)

RRuo 2009-11-09 18:41

Re: N900 shipping delayed

The problem must be very BIG. Nokia handed out some 300 devices for testing and after that they “cancelled” the release. Problems are so big that they can’t even estimate how long repairing it can take so it is impossible to even give guess of the release date for us.
I preordered from Nokia 05.10.2009 and feel quite stupid and frustrated waiting for something Nokia is releasing in November, or December or 2009 or 2010 or 2100 or 2190
