Re: Jolla User Experience Thread
Hello fellow sailors,
i hope i don't bother with a newbie question but i cant seem to mount my SD Card. I posted it 3 pages back but it seems i got overread. I tried everything to my knowledge but it seems that lsusb and sudo blkid didn't work on the bash. How can i mount my SD Card on the phone directly in the bash. The card is recognised in /run/user/100000/media/sdcard So which command i have to execute? Plus should i format my Card Fat32 / ext4 (running Linux and gparted) Thanks for everything |
Re: Jolla User Experience Thread
Just ordered 2 devices, one for me and one for my bro.
Go Jolla!!!! Can't wait. |

lsusb and blkid are not necessary for that. And why use a usb tool for mounting an sd card? So basically all is fine ;) |

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread
People seem to have problems understanding how the android support actually works, so I'll explain a bit.
So, Alien Dalvik is an android emulator/virtual layer and the apps actually think they are running in legit android phone. That's how google play was hacked to work, and why it wants to install google services such as voice search etc. For example, the WhatsApp (in which people have problems using) works just fine. Sounds, push notifications, popups all work. However, if you have the WhatsApp "on top of the emulator", it will think it's running on an android device and is currently open, as the Jolla won't (can't?) send information about screen turning off to the emulator, and you won't get notifications. However, if you run WhatsApp "behind" some other application, it will send push notifications etc. just fine. This works for every application. Myself, I use launcher as a solution. I installed GO Launcher EX from Play store and after I move to another app, I always change back to the launcher first. Then the apps think they are running in the background and will send notifications fine. Also, as the emulator works like an android device, the task manager/application killer apps work just fine. Though, it seems my Spotify app keeps on restarting itself in the background for some reason. |

I just wonder where are the user preferences? Pre-defined RAM usage, power / performance priority.. No per application definable access to Jolla subsystem etc.. Cache memory and swap discs? I can't believe somebody bothered to create this whole virtual machine just to let it emulate one low end Android device in a uniform fashion. Definitely we need the option in Jolla part to exempt Alien Dalvik from swipe down to close. |

The most irritating thing about sailfish for me is the damn feedscreen going nuts over it
I don't know how many times I have activated it by mistake now. Edit: I think it would be better disable feedscreen when an application is active. Atleast such apps that is using the bottom for swipe inside the app eg al listview related apps, camera, imageviewer and so on. Actually as it is today its very very very annoying. And definitivly new users will get affraid. |

Other things... I found fix for the low sound volume in android apps. It's really amazing:
Download an android volume controller app and max out the volume. |

Manually edit your definitions into config files in "sync" and "service" directory. Dbus magic is used for manually initiating sync (i.e. forcing sync to start immediately). You can add automatic schedules to your definitions, for me they work although not quite consistently. I haven't found good documentation about buteo config files, but there were some instructions in meego forums, links were in thread that you linked. I'm not confident about my configs, but they seem to work. Hopefully we have at some point Jolla UI for managing buteo syncml configs. |

Now that we know it is a virtual Android Machine  I am more interested learning how to make them Android that require complex permissions to run the way I want. The telecom applications I wish to run are more complex and don't function well if at all. They need to be granted the permission they need to operate, while being forbidden rights they take but don't need. Both on Alien Dalvik layer passed through to Sailfish. So where is the configuration file or interface for this virtual machine? Is it not allowed to access the Jolla earspeaker or does it not see the ear speaker due to incompatible hardware? No root Access -> can this thing emulate a rooted Android? Just an observation: Standard Installed Android parts: Android System 4.1.2 Camera 4.1.2 Contacts Storage 4.1.2 Download Manager 4.1.2 Downloads 4.1.2 Fallback 4.1.2 Input Devices 4.1.2 Package Access Helper 4.1.2 Phone 4.1.2 Phone Messaging Storage 4.1.2 Search Applications Provider 4.1.2 Settings Storage 4.1.2 System UI 4.1.2 User Dictionary Yandex Store 2.1 Myriad Fake Home 1.0 ->> this is something from Alien Dalvik |
Re: Jolla User Experience Thread
Unlike alarms in Harmattan, it seems there is no auto-snooze when you just wait for the alarms to stop on Sailfish. On N9, there was like 5-6 snoozes before it finally stopped snoozing anyway.
I really liked this feature, as I was lazy enough to prefer surviving the terrible ringtone over the efforts of snoozing. I wish it will be possible on Sailfish too someday. |
Re: Jolla User Experience Thread
Question about the UI / onscreen keyboard when writing an SMS. Let's say I select a contact named John. Right above the keyboard I click the message line, where in faint letters it says "Hi John". That seems a nice start for a message (something I missed on N9 btw) but I have no clue how to activate the "Hi John". Any key and it disappears.

Notes are absent however, which is a pity. I didn't test SMS, but I'd be surprised if that works, as Jolla handles sms differently from N9, iirc. Leaves me wondering why so many people choose google and similar proprietary cloud-based services. I've been using SyncML and a service of my liking since the N95. Hurray for open protocols! |

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread
Apart from bugs and things I already discussed on IRC, just a few not-impossible-ideas I'd like to see, and I submit them to TMO in case they are silly and should not be submitted to care@jolla.com:
- Turn by turn navigation in Maps (of course). - "Set as unread" in Email pulley menu (inside a message). - When launching maps, ask whether GPS should be activated and disabled on close (instead of having to toggle it in general Settings, but should still be doable from there). - Events icons in Lockscreen should be interactive, or at least more informative (email sender, number of emails, sms sender and preview, and so on), instead of having to trigger the Events menu. The main purpose of the lockscreen is to add a step between double tap and swipe gestures for unlocking, but lets make it content-rich. - Internet connectivity in Lockscreen pulley menu (should group Wifi and 3G networks). - Show clock for let's say 30 sec when phone is locked but proximity sensor is uncovered (when the Jolla is picked up in pocket). See Timenow app by Qwazix for N900. - Android apps should close when the Alien cover is closed. Instead, they are kept in memory (try to launch 3 Android apps, close the whole cover, reopen it: the three apps are still there if you press the right icon in the toolbar). - Add possibility to reorganize songs in queue list of Music player, by drag and drop. Add long press/contextual menu options too, like "queue" (plays next regardless of where the song is in the list), "move to top", "move to bottom". - Fix Gallery issue reported here several times. - Fix Video player (tried three different formats, including mp4 and avi, none played correctly except of course the Jolla videos that came with the device). - Improve account identity visibility: not possible at the moment to know which account you are using in the Messages application when you try to send an instant message. Not possible to switch either: add each identity to the "Select type" button, so that one can chose which account to use to send the message, just like all phone numbers of the recipient are already displayed in that menu. - If you want to change presence status of one account out of several accounts of the same type in the Events view, then you can't distinguish identities because only account type is displayed. I think it is planned already, I discussed it with a dev. - Move battery level and connectivity icons to Lockscreen instead of in between lockscreen and homescreen. Make connectivity icon interactive for easy choice of data network (simpler than having to browse the Settings app)? - I don't think the 3G icon changes between these two very different states: "3G network available" and "connected to 3G network". It should. - Allow "rearrange" and "restore" in longpressed homescreen view. Don't remove the scroll feature in that view. - Add Ambience to Lockscreen pulley menu, as one will likely want to change ambience when unlocking or just before locking the device (when situation changes and ones takes his Jolla in his pocket, or puts it in his pocket: car, meeting, work, home, etc.). Allow only one of the four side swipes currently reserved for chosing among favorite ambiences. - Use unnecessary side swipes on lockscreen and homescreen for something more relevant. Examples: side swipe on lockscreen to return to last state before the device locked up (return to last applcation in fullscreen, not homescreeen); side swipes on homescreen user-defined, with options for launching Settings app, or triggering a general menu similar to that of the N9 (and actually, similar to Sailfish Settings app's first page). - Add "Search by term" in Email pulley menu. - Add a keyboard layout with arrows and special characters, easy to display (side swipe?). - In Sailfish Browser, add landscape, add select text mode, remove forced refresh on tab opening, show address bar when on top of the page for easy URL editing, add option to browse location for each download, add swirley gesture for zooming/dezooming. - Increase number of tweets in memory in Events view. - Add conversation context when tapping on a tweet. - Add options for showing events in a seemless way when bottom swiping to show the Events view, instead of having to click on Twitter icon first. Options available should offer seemless displaying for Twitter, RSS feeds, Calendar events, and other social stuff I am not aware of. Calendar events should stay on top untill removed by user. - Add Google Calendar synchronization and with multi-calendar support. Well, OK, I finally added a few things already mentioned in the thread or on IRC. I'm not complaining or asking to add all that without any further discussion in the next update. :D Just trying to write things down before I forget, but I know Jolla will decide at the end, and take the time they need. Input and positive/negative comments welcome. |

I searched but haven't found an answer - how to import .ics calendar file?
|
Re: Jolla User Experience Thread
I will also ask here, didn't find answer from Google / TMO (yet).. :)
So I have android applications, and I would like to import media from aliendalvik to jolla. Now for example I've got WhatsApp images stored in /data/sdcard/WhatsApp/Media/ Can I somehow add media indexing to that folder in my gallery app, or should I have some script running and copy these images to let's say /home/nemo/Pictures/Jolla ? |
Re: Jolla User Experience Thread
You can get WPA EAP-PEAP and EAP-TTLS (maybe others) to work.
-Devel-mode on -Make file /var/lib/connman/wifi-foo.config In file add following (this is example :-) ) [service_foo] Type=wifi Name=wlan_ssid EAP=peap CACertFile=/home/nemo/ca.pem Phase2=MSCHAPV2 Identity=user Passphrase=password -then in gui: settings -> wlan off -> wlan on |

Any1 had some weird crashes or something? My phone has crashed 2 times in the past 1,5 weeks. No idea what might cause that. I think the phone is on but just cant unlock it, first time pressing power button for some time worked and shut down the phone, 2nd time the led was just red for long time and didnt seem to shut down completely, had to take out battery and then it booted normally.

Besides that, it's really bad that the clock is on the bottom of the lock screen. If you just want to check the clock, you have to fully pull it out of your pocket. Furthermore, when using a side-swipe to peak to the home/cover screen from an application, the clock is on top. I understand the design decision that the clock moves to the lock screen above, but it's not intuitive to look for the same information at different screen location. |
Re: Jolla User Experience Thread
Some users at the finish user forum are reporting of increased stand by time after they removed the NFC sticker from the othet half.
Could we confirm this somehow? Is there a way to log the NFC usage? |

I used symlink to link android images to my gallery application, and it worked. After playing the phone today (I put the SD card in, did different stuff), at some point the photos had disappeared.
Now I can't make another symlink, because it already exists, so what to do? Is this known problem? |

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread
Published an article about my first impressions about the Jolla UI on my blog today. It's in German, of course, and as usual Google doesnt do a good job translating it.
Still, here's the link: http://oskar.twoday.net/STORIES/581437258/ Main points are: Summary I really, really like the UI. There's a lot of what worked well in the N9 in it, plus some new and great features on top. I was unsure about how the UI would work in real life because some early reviewers considered "the entire UI paradigm broken", but that's just not true. It's coherent, easy and simple. On the other hand: I'm in the target group. Somebody who only wants a 1:1 replacement of his current Android phone and is not willing to follow even a 4-step-guide during setup ist probably not. Swipes Swiping was a great concept on the N9. I had always felt there could be more than just the few gestures Harmattan supported. Jolla gives me just what I want here. What I love so much is how they allow fault-tolerant input when other systems require you to precisely hit a target. I felt comfortable with all the gestures even before my first applications were installed and all accounts were configured. It became part of my muscle memory instantly. Home Screen and Active Covers I liked the idea of Active Covers in theory because they reminded my so much of the desktop widgets I couldn't live without during the Symbian/Fremantle days. Funny that this was the one aspect of the UI that took me longest to get used to. Probably I'm too much into the "open applicaion, then do stuff" way of doing things now. However, if I say that it took me longer to get used to than the rest, that doesn't mean really long. It's not even two days now that I use my Jolla phone, and I'm slowly getting the hang of Active Covers and shortcuts. Oh, and by the way: What Jolla calls "peeking" is a nice little feature. I used it from the very start. No confirmations necessary The fact that Jolla replaced those "Are you sure? Yes/No"-parts with simple timers is fantastic. So simple, yet so useful! I can delete something and go on with whatever I was about to do without confirming anything, without waiting, just like that. Still, I could abort the action if I wanted to. I really like that part. Full screen in gallery etc. I'm used to it meanwhile, but I found it irritating at first how full screen applications (document view, images, maps) don't even give a hint that you can get some controls back by tapping. I tried to swipe, activate a pulley menu,... nothing. The one tap is so simple once you know about it, but I could imagine some users getting frustrated over it. Nothing about features, bugs, applications etc so far. I think there's so much I want to say that I'd rather write shorter articles on one topic each than one huge single review. :D |

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread
Just rewatched the official Jolla "Tell me about ambience" video.
In the video the voiceover tells me to swipe from the right side on home/lockscreen to enter the ambience. This doesn't work here. Plus i can't save ANY ambience i select / crerate. Furthermore the white ambience was only installed after i put on TOH for maybe the 5th or 6th time. Can anybody pls confirm if swipe from right works on home? Does somebody has the same issue of not saving ambiences? Thx in advance P.S.: read the http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=91988 thread but i have not the same issue |
