Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Thanks ajf, this is already looking cool.
What a pity it cant just use the wayfinder maps already installed... that would be handy! ;) |

Also, like others have mentioned, I don't know how to get routing to work since there is no "ok" or "go" button on the form. Overall, this looks very promising... much better and simpler to use than Maemo Mapper which I could never really get to work because of its complex interface. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
ok, i think that perhaps i'm an idiot. could someone who has had some luck with this post some step-by-steps? here's what i've done:
1. install navit 2. install maps--i went to http://maps.navit-project.org/download/, selected a region, and saved it to osmxxx.bin 3. edit navit.xml file. all i changed was the path to map file, and the center location (i'm not sure if the format is correct; i used 33.50,-86.78, which looks different than the xx N yy E format in the .xml file). when i open the program, i get a blank screen. the external gps isn't connected, and i can't seem to find an option to even attempt to connect it. what am i missing here? |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
:(is it only for germany?
i want it for tehran-iran possible?? or must make a request? |

Also check in the xml file where you changed the path to ensure that you have enabled that mapset. More docs would be useful I agree; there doesn't seem to be much on the main Navit wiki either. Probably worth diving into the code to take a look at how the GPS is used/detected, but if anyone has used it successfully please do pipe up and give us a quick run down. Thanks, Si |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Well, I think you have to connect to the GPS via the control panel in Maemo. However, when I do that, it crashes the app.
As far as the maps go, I have not had much luck using the downloaded maps (select and download). I too get a black screen to start with, but scrolling around shows that I do have maps --- unfortunately, they are all squeezed into a vertical line. :S However, using the downloadable planet.bin file shows the maps just fine. Though, there is no way to route because there is no "Ok" button on the form. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
hmm, still can't find the map. however, when i'm clicking on the screen, the coordinates seem to jump from ~59' W to 100' W abruptly (i'm somewhere around 86' W)--that actually corresponds to my area of interest (eastern U.S.) haven't tried planet.bin yet; i don't feel like wiping my entire sd card if possible. how do you connect to the GPS via the control panel? this is an n800 connecting to external/bt gps, if that makes a difference.

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
ok, i tried compiling and using this on my desktop and ran into the same issues. so it doesn't seem to be os2008 specific.
1. at least on the desktop, navit doesn't look at /usr/share/navit for navit.xml. i was frustrated because the changes i was making to the file didn't seem to work. i found a search order somewhere, but running navit /path/to/navit.xml worked best. 2. i'm an idiot. on the n800, there's a gps connection dialog in settings. didn't crash the app, and the coordinates showed up, although i still didn't have a map. 3. here's the big problem i think: making your own maps just doesn't work. none of the maps i made worked on either the desktop or the n800. on the desktop, whenever my navit.xml pointed to a home made map, the program would seg fault. planet.bin worked fine on the desktop, i haven't loaded it on a sd yet for the n800. 4. coordinates are weird in navit.xml. they're in the format 3300 N 8700 W, instead of 33.00 N 87.00 W. when you click on a point on the screen, you get the above format plus a 33.00, -87.00 format, except that the numbers aren't quite identical. don't know what to make of that, except that as mentioned elsewhere, if you enter in the xx00 N yy00 W format, you may not center where you think you should. |

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I've just emailed the Garage owners to see if they are still maintaining the code. It looks like they applied some Maemo-ization patches to the 0.0.3 release.
I note that the CVS is now past 0.0.4 and there was talk on the mailing list of another release. I'll try a GTK build of the CVS code this evening and see if it works better, etc. |
