First, my icons and such are animating properly. I've occasionally had strange things happen (not stoppage for icons) that usually disappear upon a reboot. The problem sounds like the icon cache (and or a full internal flash or full memory/swap)

The reason for my last post is I restored my n800 to as close to factory as I could get, then did the updates the app manager recommended, enabled and disabled the extras repository - without actually installing anything - and whatever database appmanager is using is already broken.

I'm already in red-pill or apt-get territory (to fix things or make them work) and I haven't installed a single application.

I would like nothing better than to have everything just work. It doesn't/won't. And I've done this a half-dozen times on two different tablets and same thing each time. The AppManager goes strange within a day after a clean flash. apt-get works but it won't remember the applications I install for a restore, and AppManager eventually refuses to resolve dependencies. I have no idea why, it just lists things in "problems" that shouldn't be there. So to get anything installed with AppManager I have to go into red-pill and manually install every app, library, data, whatever one at a time working up the dependency tree. But once I enable red-pill, they say everything is completely unsupported so they won't fix anything.

And I am really frustrated (can't you tell) since their install system doesn't work for normal packages for me, meanwhile I'm trying to figure out how to package my app that has a dependency on something which is a utility and probably less obscure than half of the things I listed as already being user visible from Extras (or when it is turned off like libuiw) and they tell me I don't understand. No, I don't.

Is the current state of my n800 what Nokia expects (extras on or off)?
Are those "user" blue pill packages?

Got it working.

The default icon is informative (good) but heavily uses colours. It also distracts. I like the original icons more. Especially the light green is ugly. However, to tell the user how good the connection is various shades of green could be used.

It seems to get a faster lock indeed (with standard internal GPSd) but I must use it longer.

CF- Are you using the most recent deb for the statusbar icon? Also does it display the status bitmap? Does the StatusBar icon pop the menu and does it start and stop minigpsd?.

(The config code is literally the same between the stand-alone and status-bar, so I'm very curious; I'm also trying to clean this up so there will only be a few config panels with much clearer layout and instructions but that will take a little while).

I don't particularly like the colors either, but haven't figured out a way to make it both clear/visible as far as lock and status and not-distracting.

I too find the presence (for chat) distracting because of its use of color.

I'll see if I can use more subtle colors in the background only when it is on or find a way of showing the information in grayscale.

The small space and being useful at dimmed brightness levels creates a problem if I don't go high saturation. And animation might be more distracting.

maemo-mapper-topomaps-fi libuiw are not in maemo extras repository but in "Nokia Catalog (3rd party software)", that's why you see them when extras is disabled.

maemo-mapper-topomaps-fi is not installable when extras is disabled because it depends in maemo-mapper which is in extras repository.

So application manager is working as it should be.

Also when installing debs directly (not from repository) application manager does not automatically install depencies. Using application manager without repository is like using dpkg with exception that it will only install packages in user/ category.

To get clean install of minigpsd through application manager you (or somebody else) have to upload bluez-utils-test and minigpsd to extras(-devel). minigpsd has to depend in bluez-utils-test and application manager will automatically install it when installing minigpsd.

On topic:

I find minigpsd very promising. I have problem with statusbar plugin though. None of the "BT GPS", "BT OBD" menu entries don't work. Nothing happens when I click them (well, menu goes away). Only working menu entries seem to be "Start GPSD" and "Stop GPSD".

With stand alone application all menu entries are working.

You have to assume the minimap, moving icon, and colours is not usable (or indeed distracting) to some people. Take a look at advanced-backlight. It is themeable.

Agreed. Same for 'Devicescape'. Even the yellow of the default GPSd applet I don't like, but it is almost white. Compared to green, green is a bigger issue. I have the very same opinion about Windows Systray and GNOME Notification Area.

I suggest theming. Then users can also solve it themselves.

If the application is started it shouldn't allow or show "Start GPSd". Likewise, if the application isn't running it shouldn't allow or show "Stop GPSd". Another useful option might be "Restart GPSd".

I uninstalled rebooted and then reinstalled statusbar app I installed "0.32-pre2 Statusbar Applet" and Rebooted

It displays a white icon with a red X in it till I hit start the app then the bitmap shows fine .

It starts and stops fine from status bar icon .

But if I click anything other than start or stop I get nothing .

I can not edit from there at all . I can edit from the setup app just fine .

It may just be my system i will try it latter with a clean mmc card I have .. or just restore a disk image of a clean system on my card. it's not that big of a deal as longs it is working for others. It's something I can most likey fix on my end .

I also had the red X. But after I started minigpsd it went away. Maybe if I reboot it goes away forever. Maybe you should refresh the icon cache at the end of the install script, or tell the user to reboot (which is the Windows way).

Not sure whats causing this. Only minigpsd is in my jobs list.
