Here is your opportunity:

It could be fun, operate as not for profit entity dedicated to the spread of Maemo in the US of A.

Exactly. I say do the MVNO thing and pay the carrier/network a royalty for the airwaves and be a carrier. I've said this since 2005. Now that they actually do finance phones in some emerging markets, it seems more feasible.

They could even MVNO on GSM spectrum and TMO and att's 3G for a flat rate $120 unlimited voice, text, and data and full access to Ovi services. That'd mean, in the US, you could walk in plop down $210 for the down payment on the N900 plus $125 for your service that month, and $125 for the service plus $45 a month for a year.

So you get:

Initial payment of $335 (Down payment and first month's service)

Recurring payment of $170 for 1 year (Service Fee and phone finance)

Recurring payment of $125 after one year (Service Fee only)

You own an N900 and have an FOSS promoting company as your carrier. I'd sign up.

I think

Its a carrier, and not Nokia, but Project Black at TMOUSA harks back to this. Hope it works out, and is the new model for doing business in the US.

I wonder if the set-back of release date might in part have something to do with nokia underestimating the number of pre-orders and having to get more of them made in a hurry?

Edit: I need to go back and listen to that video properly when I have better sound quality.
