Because only T-Mobile uses compatible 3G frequencies in the US. With other carriers in the US you can only get 2G (and 2.5G) connection.

Wow... that was amazingly short-sighted on Nokia's part!
I thought it also could use 3G at least on AT&T's network.

The deals you found seem exceptionally good, if they are still available when the device ships.

With T-mobile they are offering an 18-month contract for £29.36 per month, i.e. a total of £529 over the life of the contract. For that you get the phone, "unlimited mobile web" (which might be speed-throttled if you exceed 1GB per month), 300 SMS per month and 300 minutes per month. Maybe too good to be true.

With Vodafone they are offering a 24-month contract for £29.39 per month, i.e. a total of £706 over the life of the contract. For that you get the phone, "unlimited mobile web" (I'm not sure how unlimited Vodafone's mobile web really is), unlimited SMS and 300 minutes per month.

I thought making a single phone that works for ~4,9 billion people(Europe, Asia, US T-Mo) compared to ~1 billion people in the Americas(AT&T frequencies) wouldn't count as "amazingly short-sighted".

That said, I'm pretty sure there will be Maemo devices with the 850 band available in the future too.

On topic: Does Amazon ever disclose sales numbers? It'd be interesting to know how many N900's have been pre-ordered, even a rough estimate. With that price in subsidised-with-contract-happy US the first/second place in unlocked is quite great.

Re: N900 best-selling phone on Amazon

Today (Sep 21)
N900 is #1 on Amazon sales, surpassing the Blackberry Pearl #3 ($143) and any other unlocked phone.
The #2 place unlocked phone is Blackberry Gemini 8520 Unlocked ($329), the #5 place is Nokia 5800 ($299).

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers...s_ldr_wireless

The price of N900 is: $582.99 (save10% from $649).

In the overall top (unlocked and with service), N900 was #1 and today is #2 after BlackBerry Curve 8900 Phone, Titanium (T-Mobile) which is FREE on T-Mobile (Price: $0.01).

To be #2 in ALL the phones sold by Amazon with and without operator is a good performance, because N900 ($582) is in front of many phones with contract that are FREE.

>>> Maybe this price made it attractive and a bestseller?

The price went down today (21-Sep-2009) to:

Price: $582.99

Do you think the price will go down even more?

I would think so, but I have no way to predict or promise that ;)

Is the N900 a bestseller also in England? Do they publish any statistics on their sites?

Using your link, N900 is down to 10th, FWIW. Behind numerous Blackberries, the Nokia 5800, Motorola V197 (unlocked, <$50), a Samsung, and a Sony Ericsson (not in that order).
