Re: N900 Gmail Clarification
If we had IMap-Idle then yes gmail would push the mails to us. That works fine (Profimail on S60 works fine in this mode)
But the biggest problem for me is that the way google works is not the way the email clients really work. It boils down on 2 things; 1> threaded view of google is so good. Why isnt there any client that does that that way? 2> archive button (Maybe this could be fixed by moving it to a different folder? out of inbox?) I really miss the google java app in this, it just was the perfect application for google mail, it did exactly the same stuff as the browser. |
Re: N900 Gmail Clarification
Whats the idea of Nokia messaging on the N900? What is it meant to achieve compared to using IMAP or Exchange?
-reduce data use? - save battery? I don't see how on the n900. With SIP, Skype, IM, etc it will always have a data connection anyway. - extra settings? For some reason, Maemo lacks the ability to set start and end download hours for IMAP, to stop it beeping in the middle of the night. - easier admin. This might matter if I had lots of mailboxes. - IMAP idle? The nokia messaging FAQ says "Automatic delivery of email using the IMAP idle protocol". So its just using IMAP? Why bother with the middle man then? And if the N900 can do idle for Nokia server, why not for IMAP in general? But right now I'm not seeing much difference in accessing my google apps mailbox via NM or directly by IMAP, except for thing that IMAP should be able to do, but are missing on the n900. |
Re: N900 Gmail Clarification
The mail program (Modest) doesn't currently support IMAP IDLE, so we can't have push email directly, unfortunately.

I dont even seem to see the email in my inbox on nokia messaging when I get the alert, have to wait a while. Im on my high speed wi-fi at home too so net speed is not a problem. I do not think I am going to rely on this service anyways since its just a trial, paying for it would be a bit much (unless its very cheap) I can live with POP3 if I must and I am sure there is or will be a free application that can use email push besides nokia messenger. |

Whats to set up? You can access gmail.com in the web browser and have the full gmail interface - search, threads, ... All that is missing is a desktop applet to notify you of new messages. Is there one? (other than using modest just as a notifier) Sure you can always download using IMAP or NM to modest. But modest is aptly named, compared to the gmail web interface. BTW, if you are going to use "shoot" as a euphemism for "shít", there is no need to asterisk out the vowels. |
Re: N900 Gmail Clarification
Check the page before, I put the instructions on there.

Mind you, you MUST login to your Gmail first (through your browser), click Settings, click "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" and Enable IMAP Access, and then Save Changes. ,,,I only had POP Access enabled initially  and obviously didn't work :p |
