ill try and upload a movie trailer or something later on tonight to my mobileme account, in terms of legality, can I do that?? Rip a DVD to get a movie trailer, encode it and upload it???

Just to be on the right side of the law lol

You could just put the preset on your mobileme :D

Keeping a watch on this thread too. I did a load of ripping of Video when I got thsi phone and they all played well. Now nothing plays.

I can get the odd trailer to play but normally requires a tiresome re-boot. Also a few played after I removed the additional codec, but that could have been down to a re-boot too which i did after the codec uninstall. in the firmware the codec pack does not appear to open up any other video formats.

Agree that this is frustrating as clearly the hardware is capable but with each update the codecs seem to be decaying :(

There is actually probably a related bug to this. Media Player 'forgetting' how to play .avi files or something. I don't think the problem is isolated to the m4v container. I'll dig that up in a few. I've given up on going back to sleep so I'm gonna get up and make some breakfast.

@bockersjv
If you get a chance could you post any codec/container info you have for affected videos?

:(

in kmplayer gui, which player are you using? osso-media-server or mplayer? do the files play with both engines?

also, i think this bug's already been reported, and (supposedly) fixed

The Preset is called iphone/xbox make sure you set the size to 640x272

I have about 200 movies that I've converted into h.264/avc over the years when I had my iPhone, I've always had problems playing them on my N900, they play beautifully on iPhones (2G, 3G, 3GS)/iPod Touch's (1G)/Archos Box's/Blackberry Storms, yes I've tested all these devices over the years, these are the basic settings

I use Handbrake for mac

Size: 640x272 or 640x320 depending on the aspect ratio of the film
Encoder: x264
Quaitly: 53-60% constant depending on 'my opinion' the quailty of the film, I generally do action/sci-fi films at 60%, cartoons and dramas at 53%
FPS: same as source
Audio: AAC (Core Audio)

I've been using these settings for years and have worked over numerous devices...

When I first got my N900 the movies playback was very choppy with skipped frames, the minor update last week improved the playback slightly but skipped frames were still noticeable in fast moving scenes and now PR 1.1 refuses to play any of my media..

I have installed the extra decoders pack from devel but still no luck, as I do not have a Windows PC re-flashing my N900 is a problem, I know there is a flasher tool for mac's but to be honest I don't really wan't to risk 3rd Party Software fubar'ing my phone.

Any one got any ideas????

PS If anyone suggests re-encoding over 200 DVD's I will put a HEX on you..... :D

If you set to 550 vbr for video, you will be surprised how good handbrake does for 3.5" screen playback and how small the files are. Smooth playback and smaller files. I also make all audio to 96kb, since I can not tell the difference with movies. I could with Pink Floyd's movie, The Wall, but mainly listening to the music in that case.

I fit a lot more on the 16gb card converting them and notice no difference on the small screen.

I dont know how good of a option that will be, especially if you intend on using the tv out option

osso-media-server is the internal media player engine (gstreamer), hence less skipping because it uses the GPU. i've found that the moment the media player fails to play a file (for whatever reason; actual unsupported format or due to it trying to cache video thumbs) all subsequent attempts will result in failure.

however, if i use osso-media-server via kmplayer to play an unsupported file (and failing obviously) i can still select a supported file and it will play fine.

beginning to think that it's something to do with the gui for mediaplayer itself and not the gstreamer component, as [can't remember who] showed an error log saying that it was caused by qtdemux.

Interesting about qtdemux. cause 1.1 upgraded qt to 4.5
