When I was planning to get my n900, I signed up for the 'even more' plan which included a free htc phone (which I promptly unlocked and sold on ebay to help pay for the n900). My current plan costs $39.99 + $30.00 for data ($69.99/mo).

Is it possible to switch my plan to the 'even more plus' (which doesn't have the 2-year contract) and also get the cheaper data plan ($29.99 + $10)? Wouldn't they charge me the $200 ETF fee? Would I still get 3G data with the $10/month plan? I suppose even with the ETF it would be worth it over the next 1.5 years of saving $30/month...

Thanks for any help!

I get 3G with $10 data plan. Everything is explained in previous posts.

No one has said anything about ETF for those with existing contracts. That's what I'm most curious about. I suppose I can just call t-mobile and ask...

I got the 500+text+web for $59.00. Now I notice that if I would have signed up for 500+text and then added web I could have saved $10.00 a month. So my question is, would I be better off canceling my plan and resign up or would someone there help if I explained why I should get it for $10 less?

Every 3G phone AT&T and TM sell they require you to get the 3G package if they're subsidizing it. But they can and will block 3G access if you just drop the sim in that's linked to a 2G plan. Otherwise, why would anyone buy the more expensive plan?

Personally, I have the cheep plan from AT&T as well, and don't mind it, since most of the places I normal go have wifi. And since my phone technically can't do 3G on their network, they have no way to force me to update to the better plan. :)

Sorry, which "cheep" plan you're referring to?
I've been using the $15 Unlimited MediaNet on AT&T for last 4 years until changed to T-Mobile for the N900.

There is no 2G or 3G plan difference for AT&T, it all depends on your phone.
I got 3G with my N95-3, 5800 and SE Z750 (AT&T branded 3G non-smartphone) and got 2G with other non-3G smartphone like N93i and other 2G AT&T branded phones.

The reason AT&T force a so-called 3G "smartphone" dataplan is to recoup the subsidize cost from people who only consdier the phone price and don't know they're forced to pay a more expensive data plan which has the same service as the regular data plan.

Have you tried change your phone to a dumb phone on their web site? The website can't recognize N900, so you can change it to whatever the phone is.
I don't think the data plan is part of contract, but it's just a smartphone is required to have a smartphone data plan.
e.g., many people on AT&T who sold their iPhone have switched to regular data plan.
Once you change to a dumbphone, you should have the $10 unlimited web service option.

I did everything on web when I got my N900 last Dec ($39.99 EM+ w/ text), change my phone to a Shadow and selected the $10 Shadow unlimited data plan. Everything works fine including tethering since then.

I think I found the answer:

For contracts with > 12 months remaining, you have to pay the ETF.

As I replied above, you should also check if you can remove the $30 data plan as you're not using the HTC anymore but a dumbphone and switch to $10 data plan. It will at least save you $20/month

I don't think anything said so far indicates you can get out of an existing contract, unfortunately.
