Pretty good, I might buy it just for the sake of it :D .
One problem though , If someone steals the phone, no matter what rings would be hard to get it back.
But surely a good concept. So that watch is fully compatible with n900?

even though i am here has basically died, the major functionality is all open sourced and available i believe (i know the dev kept some of the code back so as not to complete neutralise the security), so it would be the perfect platform for someone to kick start another anti theft app.

i also agree with keeping things simple, at first anyway... but the more anti theft features we can perfect over time the less likely we'll have our n900's irretrievably stolen.

perhaps a campaign for another day but... when sim cards are swapped by thieves they generally tend to put in an unregistered empty pay as u go sim rather than their own (or no sim at all) to test it. perhaps we could lobby our own provider to allow FREE sim independant data connection to a simple server solely for the purpose of reporting stolen phone co-ordinates etc?

Would it still make a data connection though if the N900 was setup to do so?

I know i am the odd man out on this. But what about plugging into the prey project.

http://preyproject.com/

they have a linux client, we might just require a little bit of tweaking.

I don't know if its a recent update but they have a Linux D/L now....has anyone tried?

Having said that: I have a passwords on my phone that comes on after 30 mins, I would assume your average thief would not be able to enter. But with Prey above, I wonder if it would still report when the phone was 'locked' ?

I tried Prey www.preyproject.com. Looks promising. Localization and basic system report seems to work (they showed my position quite accurate in google maps); though, someone would need to put in some work in order to get webcam images and more device specific modules to work.

I suggest to use alarmd since we don't have crontab.

It is written in plain bash and very modular.

Do not try the "Lock Device" option, it seems that this one is now rebooting my N900 right after the Desktop appears.

Haven't you guys heard about SMSCON? It's a daemon app (idk what that means, I just installed it to help the author), and it boots with the phone. You can't shut it down unless you know N900 and coding. Currently has about 10 commands, which are executed by SMS from a phone. For example, if I send "TrackOn" to my N900, it will send GPS locations to a preconfigured number (which is my mothers atm :D) . You can download SMSCON editor where you can change the commands. It's in extras-devel and the usual e-d warning applies!

You do know what it means! That's what a daemon is - background process.

SMSCON looks great, but i have a lock-code and from what i understand that defeats the whole point because smscon won't get past the code. I want to install it the dev thread is so long and confusing regarding where it's actually at i'm utterly baffled at whether i should or not

Re: N900 Anti-theft Project

so why dont you just disable the lock code? i know it seems kind of stupid but look at it from the other angle...a thief steals your phone. he changes the sim card. then he gets a simple "hello" (example of a command for smscon that starts the tracking) sms. he doesnt even know that he is tracked so he uses the phone. then you can find him (with a couple of strong friends =P) and reclaim the phone. he will not have the balls to try that again =D

if you have a lock than the thief simply throws the turned off phone in the garbage and you never find it.

just my opinion..

Oh i agree, i've wrestled with the two options. The code isn't really for anti-theft protection now (it was when i first got it because there were no alternatives) but now it's more for stopping people picking it up and rooting through my stuff, and part of also has that issue with it getting stolen - no point getting it back if in the meantime the thieving bastard has wiped everything or spread all my sensitive information far and wide. What'd be great is if SMSCON developed a feature like Wavesecure, where you can remotely lock it and get the best of both (or does it have that feature? like i said, the thread is so long and confusing it's the only reason i haven't installed it)
