No i disagree... this community will be the inspiration the N900 needs but right now its not doing a very good job of that because too many people are wining constantly instead of getting involved and giving constructive input.

To an extent, you are correct. However, as you may well be aware, there are aspects of the device which the community cannot control. Take PR1.2, for example - had the community been able to create it themselves, or at least be involved in its development, it probably wouldn't have taken so long to deliver so little. Unfortunatey, it appears that the N900 is not as open as we like to think (albeit more open than any other device of its type) and we still depend heavily upon nokia for many major improvements.

Please prove me wrong, but I'm under the impression that much of the core experience is closed-source and therefore maemo would not be able to survive without nokia's continued support.

Support which, sadly, seems rather half-hearted at the moment.

You kinda contradicted 2 things there lol, what i said was the INSPIRATION will come from this community, because of what you said Nokia are not exactly being the inspiration with the lag especially on the last update (not really support is it) making people turn away from them so what is left? this community of course lol.
We users of the N900 get hardly any talk from Nokia leaving us to our own devices basically so that's when the community has no choice but to carry on hence why i said the inspiration comes from within the community.
Support and inspiration are 2 different things and i am afraid to say at the moment neither come from Nokia.
