Take a look at this
http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/
Basically an Apple update to display signal strength in a more favorable way. If you read between the lines it says the signal strength stays the same but more bars are displayed. What a cop out...

Take a look at this:

While the software update obviously does not and cannot address the design of the antenna itself - or make the drop from holding the phone any less - it does change the way the issue is perceived among users. The result is that most iPhone users will see fewer bars disappear when they hold the iPhone 4 in a bare hand. The side effect is that the iPhone now displays fewer bars in most places, and users that haven’t been reporting signal in dBm will time see the - perhaps a bit shocking - reality of locations previously denoted as having excellent signal.
You know what... in the end, I think Apple will get credit for all this because they've "made a more honest representation of the cellular signal reception bars" compared to other cellphones...

You can start berating them now...

The new mapping looks false. As I understand it the strength changes logarithmically; the new mapping is more linear.

In that case... I guess we'll soon see an onslaught of attack from other cellphone manuf... especially those featured in Apple's antenna page.

Then they'll realize that in the end... any publicity is good publicity..

I have to say that Anadtech analysis that ysss linked I agree 100%.

It easily explains why not all users "see" the issue: If you already have good signal strenght to start up, dropping 20dB from there doesn't matter. Only if/when you are already marginal, then the 20dB drop or so will make HUGE difference.

With the new OS update many users will only be seeing 4 bars instead of 5. Let's see if they now come back and complain that their reception has degraded... while nothing is different other than the scale how the bars are shown...

Here we go...

The co-CEO's of Research in Motion, those behind Blackberry, issued an official statement in response to Apple's latest attempts at covering up the iPhone's antenna issues. The statement ranges from anger about Apple using the Blackberry and its antennas in order to make the iPhone 4's not look as bad, to RIM bashing Apple by stating their smartphones don't require a case for full usability.*

"Apple's attempt to draw RIM into Apple's self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple's claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public's understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple's difficult situation. RIM is a global leader in antenna design and has been successfully designing industry-leading wireless data products with efficient and effective radio performance for over 20 years. During that time, RIM has avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4 and instead has used innovative designs which reduce the risk for dropped calls, especially in areas of lower coverage. One thing is for certain, RIM's customers don't need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity. Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple."*- Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie

That wasn't one of the Sophie's Choice conditions I described, was it?

Besides, how can a company do BOTH?

Erm... for each positive statement, a negative statement comes out... thus equaling zero?

I tried.
