New CEO thinks there's a range of experiences to be delivered. Too early to say what combo of platforms for each. Where to emphasize which is a question. Seemed to be talking about internal platforms, not for example Android. I missed some other relevant comments.

Nokia are in a transition into a Software Company makes sense hiring someone whose background is software to be leading them.
the last couple of years nokia have failed on software from services all the way down to specific device firmware, hopefully he will put a change to release of half baked service and firmware releases.
The OS strategy is as good as set in stone Nokia invested too much in purchasing Qt, Symbian and investing in MeeGo to change that

I listenned the second half of the press conference. The last questions where about the smartphone market. He was making broad statement so it was difficult to know what he is up to:

- about Microsoft and Nokia : he can help with better communication. Coopetition : cooperation on the services, like Office for symbian, competition in "other area" (windows phone 7 obviously).

- about MeeGo and Symbian, platform strategy : you need a range of platform to adress every market from [dumb] phones to smartphone. To soon to tell what the change could be...

I didn't had the feeling he was willing to drop the current platforms (android was mentionned in the question)

I think he is smart enough to focus on the truly troublesome areas for nokia.

-the software services need a lot of improvement. The Ovi store for Symbian is currently the most successful online software product together with Ovi maps for Symbian when looking at the amount of users. But both can still be improved a lot! Ovi music really needs to be pushed hard, needs to function much better and needs to be more easily available. Ovi files has already been killed, ovi mail has been ported to Yahoo mail and I suspect that ovi share will not last long, since I don't think many people use it (I don't know anybody)

-presence in the US. Nokia really needs get a higher market share in the US. Preferably with high-end devices. Mostly because of the media attention that product that are successful in the US get.

-Nokia needs to react faster. The Palm pre and iPhone 3GS have similar hardware and software specs to the N900, but it were released almost 6 month earlier. This makes a huge difference in the perception of people. Nokias high-end phone should also be perceived as "state of the art". I think that the N95 was the last Nokia device to be perceived as state of the art, mostly because of the build-in GPS, wifi and 3D OpenGL graphics (no other device had that mix of features in 2007, things change very fast indeed!)


-I don't think Nokia's platform strategy will change. The N9 (based on Maemo 6 / MeeGo compatible UX), will be released by the end of the year, and changing that now will just cost a lot of money, it is way too late to make huge changes. Maybe if the N9 is a complete commercial failure (like the the MS kin), that the platform strategy on the high-end will be changed (Android or WIndows Phone 7), but it definitely won't change anything for the N9 device. On the mid-range and low-end the strategy will definitely not change. Nokia is successful with Symbian in this market segment. That is where Nokia makes it's money. Changing that any time soon will put the entire company at risk

According to finnish tabloids:

-He is a huge ice-hockey fan.
-Doesn't like salmiakki,
-Apparently has been travelling with Ollila for past month or so
-Ollila made him read tons about finnish history and culture.
-Ollila plans to resign after the transition period with new CEO is over.
-Did we mention he likes ice hockey? Oh well, let's just mention that in every article at least twice.

huh who cares - nokia doesnt give a flying toss about the n900 anyhow, as noted here many times its only the community now - Nokia is out of the picture (unless you are THAT much of an optimist)

I don't trust Microsoft... All they want to do is spread their OS and bloatware everywhere, we'll see Nokia's running *shiver* Windows Mobile before you can say blue screen of death

Well, at least Nokia is still making money. Those bwankers were still getting their insane "bonuses" even when the whole economy was falling down around them.
