You should be able to run reboot/poweroff as root. They actually do the same thing: poweroff if DC is connected and reboot if disconnected.

To get the power button to "work", you need to install the powerlaunch package and change the powered daemon a little to get it to work without dsme running. This way you get the menu on pressing power, but it does not really reboot if you select it.

What would you guys think of a board devoted to these machines ? I see a lot of news blog's bottom pages discussions about the SmartQ 5/7 and beside from this great topic, there's no real place with centralized information for the owners or future buyers of them. At least in English...

I'm not trying to steal "audience" here, I'm just asking...:)

I think it'd be interesting if Maemo.org was willing to host it as an actual section (devices forums for "Nokia N810", "Nokia N800", "Nokia 770", "Moses SmartQ 5", "Moses SmartQ 7", "Accessories", "Competitors", and "Buy&Sell"), since they are seeing interest from a Maemo.org sub-project (Mer).

But, if that wont fly, it would probably be a good idea to have an english language board devoted to them.

This was recently discussed, the feeling was that if there was a suitably large cohort of people using them (with Mer, ideally), then a "Devices" sub-forum would make sense.

However, the current policy is create sub-fora when demand is proven; not the other way around. Posts can always be moved out of "Competitors" to "Devices"; especially if they're well tagged.

Re: Moses SmartQ 5

>Srskeeps

i used SmartQ7

so if you want to release a firmware it's "SmartQ7"

the only real bug i could find was the installer - it's buggy...

it's works but sometimes its a little buggy - it's slow and nothing happens - i haven't had a total freeze yet (i think - waiting)

Its just so slow...

It's not really a bug - but - it's really slow so - it feels lika bug - it shouldn't be so slow..

and then it goes to sleep - its dead - alias dead - nothing - dead...

Someone on one of those links (vague, sorry) reviewed FBreader on one of these things and they were ecstatic. So there is another reason to buy one -- as a book reader.

I was a tablet user for a long time before I even started using the D-Pad, so I think I could live without it, though it is a handy thing.

I'm hoping that the FBreader's handy next-page-with-hardware-button-click will work on the Q7, because that's an important FBreader feature.

I'm assuming that the Q7 will continue to be available at or near $200. What a deal! Nokia, thanks for helping sell me on the Q7!

Put on a SD card, rename it SmartQ5 - NO - "not - rename it as SmartQ7" (or whatever you renamed our firmware image to), and upgrade.

It's with a Q7 kernel.

that is kinda weird - plugging in dc / clicking the hw reset buutton doesn't help?

the q5s are pretty unbrickable, so it surprises me.

If you used an image made for Q5 on a Q7 (even one with a Q7 kernel), then it wrote the Q5 versions of qi and u-boot to the iNAND, so now it looks for SmartQ5 on the SD when you try the upgrade procedure.

I want to use Mer for many reasons. First, the official firmware is dead at 1/4 when booting. Secondly, Mer is designed for touch screen and is unbelievable fast after booting.

I installed Mer on Q7 just now. The issues:
1. It can be started with AC power. The screen kept being sparkling. Once passed the very initial time point, I can plug it in.
2. I can't make the wireless work by this tutorial : http://www.jiongtang.com/blog/html/s...r-smartq5.html
It says: No network devices available.
3. The big USB doesn't work. It can not recognize USB keyboard or mouse.
4. The device can not be shutdown.
5. That screenshot does not work?

I have several questions:
1. How to calibrate the touch screen. I didn't do right when it was first booted.
2. How to make the usb keyboard work?
3. Where is the up down left right key on the soft keyboard? Because I need it to recall my last command.
4. How can I install more software? After the wireless been solved?

Yeah, and funny fact: the signal for DC being plugged in, is completely opposite on the Q7 :)

I'm building Q7 u-boot right now, hope this will help things.

Re: Moses SmartQ 5 & 7

Hi,

Just wanted to post a quick update indicating my Q5 and Q7 arrived safely and in operational condition.

My wife tested the Q5 and said it was almost as cute as her N800.

I'm typing this on the Q7 using an old Fellowes Stowaway USB keyboard. The virtual one is too slow.

Both units came w/o manuals but these are available online.

I look forward to testing Mer on the Q7/Q5.

Eletroworld has proven to be a good supplier and I highly recommend it: very communicative and responsive.

Stskeeps 2009-06-06 18:05

Re: Moses SmartQ 5

For anyone with Q7 who dares alpha test this, I have just made a image with a Q7 uboot, and a Q7 kernel.

http://www.daimi.au.dk/~cvm/mer-0.14testing2.SmartQ7

Remember: it's very difficult to 100% brick your device because of the simple fact that the boot ROM (not erasable) will look for a boot sector on internal or external SD depending on key press, and boot from there. So if internal SD is totally hosed, you can still boot with a external SD with a bootloader and such on it.

After the 1001 time did my machine go to orange mode (install) i did a reset holding function key got red light - holding down function key plug in charger - succes at last...

But a still have a problem - after shutdown (sudo halt) the power button only give me a red light and i have to use the charger to startup mer 0.14 ver2 (okey it could be that my battery is really low) Is there a battery indicator in mer?

Matan 2009-06-06 20:14

Re: Moses SmartQ 5

Read you battery value with:

cat /sys/devices/platform/hhtech_gpio/battery_s

Under 850 is low. Above 990 is full.

Re: Moses SmartQ 5

I'm a previous N800 owner looking to purchase a internet tablet/entertainment device again. And I wanted to get some input from some Q 5 - Q 7 owners on their experience with these devices.

I'm looking for a tablet that will allow me to watch movies, listen to music, browse the web, read a book, some minor games like solitaire or bejeweled clones etc. I'd like to use Mer on it if possible for the optimized tablet setup. It will probably be a month or two before I purchase.

My reason for not considering the N800 - N810 again is that I wasn't impressed with the 800 in regards to performance. And something will just a little more power would fit the bill nicely. Ideally I'd like the Q 7, but so far from what I've read here Mer doesn't seem quite ready for the device.

totololo 2009-06-07 13:29

Re: Moses SmartQ 5

for what i have read, the smart tablets seems to be slower than our NIT, am I wrong ?

Nichod 2009-06-07 14:19

Re: Moses SmartQ 5

From the video reviews it seems comparable and faster in some cases. Or did I see that wrong?

DannyBiker 2009-06-07 14:31

Re: Moses SmartQ 5

Also, I would like some feedback on video capacities. I've seen some videos that show the devices having a hard time reading video files. Is this kinda fixed with "official" firmware update (using Canola) or with Mer ?

Thanks ! :)
