Install open arena if you do not have the original quake3 files.

I have the original files, playing q3a since 2001!

...and i linked the files with X Terminal, but nothing happens then, when I want to play the game...black screen

I installed open arena, works fine so far...ok, I dont finde an option to quit while i am ingame and the accelerometer controls are terrible, but i can play it

Hope this helps someone. If you want to quit Open Arena you press the Blue Shift key and '=' sign. That will bring up the menu in Open Arena. At least it did for me.

Re: Quake 3 on N900

does quake 3 run ok for everyone here? Mine exits and shuts the game off everytime i play the fifth map. i can't get trough that level because of that. Other bug is that every now and then when i start playing quake 3, the screen just spins around and the game is unplayaple.

any tips to my problems with Quake 3? Thank you

Hey hardcore gamers, I would like to ask you something :)
I would like to use the accelerometre as a mouse, I mean, to control the "head (look)" like on PC, but i can't setup the accelerometre in the "Control" section, someone can help ?

Ah yes, this indeed fixed my problem. I put the files in the wrong place xD without the pk3 files in the ~/.q3a/baseq3/ folder apparently it just stays black and spins indefinitely and spontaneously quits when you hit the corner minimize button. Would be great if it did a check to see if the files were there and informed the user they were missing, very confusing :( But it's working great now. It's so ridiculous to be playing this on my n900, haha, but the autoaim makes it kind of silly... It's the only way though without a mouse. Definitely still a lot of fun, wish i knew someone around here with another n900 :'(

I'm not sure this would be desirable, I'm having a -lot- of difficulty not leaning the n900 forwards or backwards when i don't mean to... I can only imagine how frustrating it would be to keep drifting upwards and downwards, especially since you never really need to look up or down except when you're firing, and it autoaims anyways.

I'd love to know if you can disable the forward/backward tilt of the accelerometer but keep the left/right turning of it. It's a little fickle but fun to turn using it, but suuuuper frustrating to use it for forward/backwards movement (and inconsistent, if anything it should do as tangs suggested... mixing movement and turning into the same control is really awkward).

The best setup I've found by playing with it for about 15 minutes is:

fire - ctrl (proximity sensor is an awesome idea but a little difficult to use... would be really great if being closer meant "fire faster", but that doesn't really apply to this game so it seems overkill)
movement - arrow keys (set left/right as strafe left/right instead of turning in the controls menu and leave up/down as move forwards/backwards)
turning - accelerometer (just try not to lean forward or backwards too much or it will override your pressing of the up or down arrow)

The only problem is the forward/backwards movement with the accelerometer if you accidently lean forward, but aside from that it's surprisingly comfortable for such a little guy

jcwilk 2009-12-15 10:57

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Actually I agree with tang after playing a bit more... A reduced sensitivity look up/down for the forward/backward tilt could be pretty cool. I find myself trying to look up and down by tilting it.

tangs 2009-12-15 14:56

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Yes, the fact to control the view with the accelerometre would be a great thing, it's just coming naturaly, just like when you play with a mouse.
.
Or at least, disconnect the accelerometre when it's going forward and backward, just to keep this move with the keybord.

If someone would be able to help us, it would be a big step in the gaming pleasure ! :)

Just installed Quake III, it was awesome, but the funny thing is after I quit the game, everything started to get real snappy. The phone actually got faster. Hell even the application manager and Bounce literally jumped. Wonder if it has anything to do with dirty cache being flushed out and more available RAM after Quake took it all.

Lol I was wondering why my N900 seem to work faster today . Maybe because I installed Open Arena ?

If this is true, could someone write an app that runs every 5 minutes that simply flushes all available RAM on the system to keep it running top notch?

Seriously guys, I know I can't prove it, but I am still testing out the speed, even the image folder with over 400 pics scrolls and loads way faster than usual. I haven't rebooted the device in over 18 hours and this is my 2nd recharge (very heavy usage).

It sounds like you already have a /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/ directory, to verify that this is the case, type in the following:

Code:

ls /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/
It shouldn't return an error but it should display the files in there, I think there's a .cfg file in there or something by default, but as long as it doesn't say "No such file or directory" you're good.

Now, assuming you moved your pk3 files into the baseq3 folder inside of MyDocs as qole suggested, now run this to move them into your quake 3 arena folder where they should go:

Code:

mv /home/user/MyDocs/baseq3/* /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/
(edit: made a mistake :'( )

And that will move all the files from the directory inside MyDocs into your quake 3 arena folder. To verify they're there, you can again run:

Code:

ls /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/
and you should see some pk3 files, this is what mine looks like: "crashlog.txt pak0.pk3 pak1.pk3 q3config.cfg q3history"

You should now be able to run quake3 and it should start up pretty quickly asking you for a key, and you just hit enter there. Let us know exactly what happens when you try to run it if it still isn't working.

Sorry if that was too verbose, not sure what your linux experience is :)

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Hi guys!

Is there a way to modify accelerometer input options like mapping and calibration?

I have 2 problems:

In this version of openarena we have 2 inputs for turning left&rigth and none for strafing (possible w keys of cource).

I'd like to remap the accelerometer control to strafe via panning and tilt for forward&backward like it is.

Also I'd like to adjust the zero angle a bit. Now its almost 90 degrees when my character stands still.

Another nice thing would be if I could set the screen to act like a mouse instead of joystick.

Is there a cfg file etc whitch I can adjust these parametres from?

thx
it's now running!

although linking would have been smarter, now I wasted ~700MB of the limited 2GB for applications...but it's OK :)
(maybe i try to delete the baseq3-folder in .q3a and then again link it to the MyDocs-Folder
(before moving everything the .q3a/baseq3-folder only contained a crashlog.txt...)

further questions: how to change controls? I want to turn off the accelerometer (Quake2 on the N810 was quite playable with stylus + keyboard without any autoaim).
Changing controls ingame in OpenArena screwed everything up, so I did not try it in Q3A

and how do I get the console fo some tweaks (cg_fov, maybe thirdperson and so on)
I also can't change the video settings, the q3config seems to be copy protected

hey! could some of you guys try to play q3tourney1 map on quake 3 arena? And tell me if you can play that level in the end. 'cause thats the level, that exits the game every time i play it. I would like to know is the bug only in my quake 3 or does this happen to everyone else.

Ah, I didn't know the space was distributed like that :\ linking makes more sense now. I just tried it and I expected it to work simply but it didn't, there's some weird permissions thing going on with MyDocs... I can't seem to chmod or chown anything in there, and quake 3 does nothing when I try to open it now. Ah well, I'll move it back to unlinked.

I was able to change the controls ingame ok, but they didn't persist when I quit. Neither did my progress through the levels, or my cdkey (which was just blank, but it still asks every time like I've just installed it). Couldn't find any way to disable the accelerometer though... Tried a couple things related to the mouse but I think those affect the stylus, the accelerometer might be hardcoded in... No one else seems to have found a way either :\

You can get to the console with ctrl+Fn(the blue arrow)

Ok, here's my problem. I've installed openarena for a while ago but decided to uninstall it. So now when I want to reinstall it, I can' find it in the program manager. extras-devel is propertly added and I can see everything except for just openarena... Maybe there is a problem that it has never been completly uninstalled?

I tried to install it using red pill method but it said icompatiple file... :/

Use Application Manager to install ioquake or openarena

Re: Quake 3 on N900

Step by step instructions:

NOTE: I have just put this together in one place and do not take credit for the work of the users that have already mentioned the following but in separate places including: qgil, omcfadde, jcwilk

BEFORE YOU START READ THE FOLLOWING WARNING:
Quote:

Now that we have hundreds of N900 testers it's a good time to settle on something that we have discussed many time in the past: the big majority of users should rely on the maemo.org Extras repository and the official Nokia repos only.

Anybody installing extras-testing, extras-devel, a third party repository, a single deb package or any combination requiring openng xterm is not a pure end user anymore but a tester. At least s/he should know! So please think it twice before posting, forwarding, reposting and recommending anything out of the stable repositories at nokia.com and maemo.org.

Two very concrete examples that current N900 users can suffer already today:

- Full memory because of apps ignoring the recommendation of installing big files in the internal memory.

- Significantly shorter use times because of widgets and apps not paying much attention to power management.

The Maemo community has put a big effort creating a quality assurance process in order to guarantee certain standards. Advanced users aware of the risks of unstable software are helping evaluating whether apps are ready for end users or not. Don't bypass all this hard work by making popular buggy software. At least not without a big warning.

End users might be happy in the short term with your links and tricks but the risk of making their Maemo life miserable are high if they are unaware of the possible consequences. Instead, giving feedback to the generally goodwilling developers will help them fixing the problems and offering the software end users want without hacks, tricks and dirt under the carpet.

BIG THANK YOU for reading this, propagating the message and helping out.

If you are confident you want to continue then....
  • On your N900 open the web browser and goto http://repository.maemo.org/
  • Click on install next to "Fremantle Extras-Deval" which is half way down the page (WARNING - Do not install unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing and have fully read and understood the above information from qgil)
  • Give it a few seconds and it should load up the application manager, click on add and it should update the catalogue automatically
  • Goto the games sub-menu and find ioquake3 and install it
    - If you get an error installing and it asks for "Libgles1-sgx-img", it is because you have disabled some of the other repositories, make sure you keep the default ones enabled all the time!!
  • Connect your N900 to the PC in mass storage mode and make a folder called "baseq3" in the root directory and then copy the *.pk3 files from your Quake 3 CD into it.
  • In X-Terminal type the following (this should show a list of files about 4 files/folders):
    Code:

    ls /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/
  • In x-Terminal type the following to move the files to the hidden folder:
    Code:

    mv /home/user/MyDocs/baseq3/* /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/
  • In X-Terminal type the following (this should now show the *.pk3 files):
    Code:

    ls /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/

Everything should now work fine, so just load up Quake 3 and it should work straight away.
(When it asks for the CD Key just press the enter key twice)

NOTE: The game is still very buggy so don't expect it to work as you want it to.

Some useful keys:
Fn (Blue Arrow) + Ctrl/Sym = Open/Close console.
Fn + , (Next to backspace) = Esc (aka Menu)
Space = Jump
Ctrl/Sym = Fire
T = Talk (press enter to come out of this)
Fn + 1 = Weapon 1 (2,3,4,5, etc will change to weapon 2,3,4,5,etc)
A = Side step left
D = Side spep right
Up (On direction keys on the right) = move forward (same as tilting phone forward)
Down (on direction keys on the right) = move backwards (same as tilting phone backwards)

You can customise the above commands to how you want in the options i.e. change side step to the direction keys!

Hope this helps and if I have missed anything just let me know!
