Looking forward to this, a gps app is all I need for the n900.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Had a reply from a developer (I think) at Sygic. He wasn't sure when the live version would be released but I do think it is pretty close judging by that it was due for release a couple of weeks ago.

The latest beta release seemed to have had some extra functionality added to it.

It is looking good from an end user point of view.

So all the lag you have mentioned has vanished with the new updates?

cardiff-blues 2010-01-25 16:02

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

The last few journeys there didn't seem to be an issue. I haven't had an opportunity for another journey since I updated a new release this morning but will try and get out later and report back.

would be nice if the beta software was available to a few more people , i would have liked to compare it to the in car pc version i have

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Update:
Have just completed another journey and there was no lag at all. They also seem to have corrected the issue that I have mentioned previously about the km alerts.

It is looking like a nice stable and useful app now and if they can get a minimise icon to easily put the app in the background then that would be nice.

After having no lags for the last few journeys I am happy enough to purchase this if the price is right.

The price has to be right considering that maemo can still get the free ovimaps, and the other gps apps that are being tested like navit.

That being said they do have a head start with releasing the product first.

I would expect it would be similar prices at the iphone and S60 devices, and if so I'll be purchasing it, I don't mind supporting a company that releases cross platform programs :)

I'd hope not, considering they're apparently selling the maps on a per-country basis for Maemo, rather than the per-region basis they do for other devices.

I guess we can only wait till it is released, looks like the same regions for sale for S60 and Maemo and iPhone on their 'how to buy' page.

Not the same regions....select Maemo and look at the options in North, Central and South America.....there are only US East and US West. Choose Symbian and there are US, Mexico, Canada, Brazil and Colombia.

I've mailed Sygic asking about the availability for Brazil maps, and they answered that by the launch date there should be only maps from countries where N900 is being officially sold. I sure wasn't happy since here is not even confirmed that it will be sold at all. In my opinion Sygic should try to cover as many countries as possible right now, since in a couple of months we can get free turn-by-turn navigation with Ovi Maps (at least we hope for it...)

It will almost certainly be announced the day after I purchase Sygic.

Previous posts on this same thread stated that they already submitted the final version to Nokia, and it is not released due to some problem with Ovi Store for Maemo.... I am not sure, but my guess is that's due to payment methods, since there is only free apps for Maemo until now (i.e. Angry Birds extra levels also can't be bought yet).

Not sure about that. In the latest beta that I installed yesterday they had corrected a bug that I had noticed and probably others, so I think they must be correcting last minute bug fixes.

It looks pretty good at the moment. They haven't sorted out a minimise screen option yet though.

I don't suppose you know if they are planning a pack-in with a car holder (like Navicore did with their 770 version) do you?

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Sorry I haven't provided an update lately.
I think there was a problem with the packages over the last few days which they updated yesterday.

NO further lags to report and it seems to be working well. Prior to yesterday my copy was crashing almost straight away after starting up.

it seemed to take sevaer attempts to launch. I'm not sure whether this was just my device or a general problem. Anyhow, after installing the laest release this problem went.

i haven't got any update on a release but i will ask he question next week to see if i can let you all have some useful news.

seriously you are better off buying a second hand 5800 and using ovi maps with all maps u wish for near the same price as sygic with all the individual maps for n900

any word about syngic map for new zealand? anyone?

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

well for s60 with europen map its 80 euro i'm willing to bet its about the same on N900 if not a little more b/c the low amount of units to sell to.
i purchased a 5800 new 13 months ago for 200 euro
so now i should easily get a second hand one the same price as sygic.
Its going to be a big rip off as they have no competition on maemo 5 they have no reason to make the price competitive with anyone else

Except that it doesn't look like they'll sell the N900 version with "Europe" maps, just individual countries/regions. I would need at least 3 purchases to cover the regions I need, so unless they're much cheaper than for other platforms (EUR 49.99 for UK & Ireland) it would cost a fortune :-(

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Yea since they split up the US into the "East" and "West" divided by the Mississippi (a distinction which only exists in the minds of European phone map companies... Navteq did the same on the N810) and I live just a couple of hours from the Mississippi, I'd easily have to get both maps for it to make sense for me. :<

That said we don't really know how their pricing scheme is going to work. I'd be okay paying $10 for the other "region". So it'd be great to have an email notification for when its ready to purchase...

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

User Update:

Tested again today on a journey into and out of London. No lag to report. Speed camera detection very good. Voice navigation commands spot on.

The only weird thing to report is that when approaching a roundabout the voice navigation will say something like "Go straight over the roundabout".

That's not strange you might think to yourself, but it will say that for every roundabout even if you have to take the first, second or third turn-off.

Other than that - am pretty pleased with performance now. As others have mentioned. Pricing will be key to my decision though as if it is too expensive then I will simply buy a decent dedicated sat nav. If the pricing is spot on I would get the Sygic.

I don't know why the launch has been delayed and the earlier news about it already been submitted to OVI and hitting a glitch seems to be false to me because of the updates that are being issued and fixes that have been worked on.

I think that they must be just smoothing out the final noticeable bugs.

I will see if I can find out the final launch date next week.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

I only way i will get this is if it's FREE since Ovi Nav is already FREE and Ovi Nav is better than this. It does no justification to buy a program that ISN'T BETTER THAN THE FREE VERSION.

Try updating the location server from the default nokia server to google's at supl.google.com this made the ovi maps obtain a lock so much faster for me..

does anyone have any idea when sygic will be released?

Sorry mate but that statement is rubbish. I have used ovi maps and Sygic on N900 and they really don't compare at the moment. But if you are happy with OVI then good on you and you'll save yourself some cash. For anyone else who wants something better than OVI then Sygic is the answer at the moment.

I have. Actually it gps lock without network connection worked before 1.1 firmware for me.
I was looking forward to Sygic anyway.
