Can anyone make a tutorial for dummies, because I don't have a clue how to install it (I have already downloaded the 2Gb file)?

no tutorial needed - after installing easy-deb-chroot, you have a menuentry called "debian image in(staller)", which does all the work for you.

a bit more info: http://wiki.maemo.org/Easy_Debian

I can confirm as well. I d/l'd Easy Debian maybe 2-3 weeks ago. Did the upgrade to 51-1. Just loaded open office writer and was typing by a count of 34 one thousand. Very fast relatively.

I didn't do any apt-upgrades or anything, just the "stock" image file.

Many of the problems are the fault of the Debian armel Sid distribution, which seems to be in a particularly bad state right now.

Ahhhh! I wish I would have known that before. Is there a good set of current and official docs for Easy Debian explaining this type of things? If not, then that should be a priority, especially if Easy Debian is ever going to reach the Extras repo.

One thing I would like to see is a choice of images to use, each of them customized a little different. For example, we could have different size images, ones with KDE and Qt libs already installed, etc. I would personally love to see an image with lyx already installed. ;)

But, thanks for the most jaw dropping experience on my N900 so far.

That would be great. It would be fantastic if someone could go through the Easy Debian threads and distill the best bits into the dusty, crufty, crappy old wiki page.

There are a lot of people quietly using Easy Debian. This would be a great way to contribute to the project.

That would be great, too. You could start with a bare Debian rootfs and add "suites" of apps. Then tar up the rootfs and I'll let you upload it to my server for others to use. I could probably even add contributed images to my installer.

You're welcome. Feel free to contribute in any way!

EDIT: And as for the warning against updating the image -- that's a fairly new warning. Something has broken badly in OpenOffice for ARM and we'd love them to fix it...

Try by yourself... :) Might be that one of your several N900 devices deserves a reflashing :) ;)

I only have one device (the other has found an excellent home elsewhere) and I noticed no speed improvement in OpenOffice after 51-1. I will have to do some more research...

Also, yes, LXDE is quite updated now. It uses wicd for network connectivity, which doesn't work due to the usual GConf errors.

I made some updates to the wiki. Hopefully it is less confusing. I didn't go through the FAQ section. Have to run.

If that is still an issue, for the keyboard layout: just put "@setxkbmap de" in /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart in your debian chroot for the german layout...

Hi I am downloading debian-m5-v2.img.ext2.bz2 from http://qole.org/files/ because I don't have an internet connection on my n900, my question is how do I install it on my n900, through app manager or do I have to use commands in xterminal ?

MisterSorin:

Copy the file that you download to your MyDocs folder (this shows as the "Nokia N900" device when plugged into a PC by USB), and then run the image installer that came with Easy Debian. It will find the file, check it for errors, and then decompress it.

PS: Get a wireless router. What's the point of an N900 without an Internet connection? ;)

do I have to decompress it in windows or in n900 ? Sorry I'm a noob. If I have to decompress it, I have to place it in documents in n900 ?

Close Debian (/usr/share/applications/hildon/closechroot.desktop) seems to be wrong.

What it does is: sudo closechroot /debian

while it should do: sudo closechroot /.debian

Metalov: Yes, I know. This is explained a few posts above.

This will not cause a problem in new installs, because I have changed this in the ~/.chroot config file, but it will cause a problem for users updating from previous versions, because it doesn't update previously installed .chroot files.

As a workaround, change the "CHROOT=/debian" line to "CHROOT=/.debian" in your /home/user/.chroot file.

I have uploaded a fixed version to Extras-devel, but I don't dare move it to Extras-testing because that will reset my 10-day quarantine period. So when the current Extras-testing version is promoted to Extras in the next day or two, I will immediately promote a fixed version to Extras-testing so we can go through the whole process again.

(EDIT: My fixed version will have a proper bugzilla field, since that seems to stress out the tester "archebyte" to no end)

EDIT2: Ah, you are reporting a different, but related error. I have fixed that one too in the new Extras-devel version.

try open the terminal and type

Code:

sudo getroot
apt-get install bzip2 wget

if getroot leaves an error message you need to install rootsh from the application manager, if bzip2 and wget installation leaves an error there is something wrong with your application manager

EDIT:
oh i forgot, if all goes well, install easy debian afterwords

MisterSorin: Yes, there are alternatives. Get an Internet connection and download from the repositories!

If you insist on downloading the packages from another computer and installing via dpkg -i, you will also have to install the bzip2 and wget packages to your N900 as well.

I thing it is sudo gainroot not getroot, after I type apt-get install bzip2 wget it says package bzip2 not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or E: package bzip 2 has no installation candidate. What does this mean ? is my n900 broken or what ?

after I type dpkg -i bzip2_1.0.5-3+0m5_armel.deb it says cannot access archive: no such file or directory errors were encounterd while processing bzip2_1.0.5-3+0m5_armel.deb it says the same to the wget file.

Please make sure you are in the same place where you downloaded the files. You probably need to type the following after "sudo gainroot" and before "dpkg -i":

cd /home/user/MyDocs

EDIT: This really isn't the thread to walk someone through installing packages with dpkg. These threads get long and hairy enough as it is...

hey Qole thanks for this great app. I have a few questions it says on the wiki that you can change the memory in the control panel / memory but I can't seem to find it. I can't find the set HW keys either on the n900. How do you minimize a program? I have searched but couldn't find anything. Thanks.

The keyboard works fine in the terminal. Has the sound been fixed? Does it work out of the box?

Sorry for posting again, I have let my n900 to install debian and I went to sleep. After I woke up it was installed and when I have tried to acces debian LXDE it said that it cannot acces the image because it is not mounted or something like that. Now I have deleted the image file and I am downloading debian-m5-v2-rootfs.tgz. Should I do with this one like I did with the other ?
P.S. I uninstalled easy-chroot and easy-deb-chroot wich I have reinstalled now.......

-The wiki still has some info that may only apply to older devices.

-To minimize a program just click on its icon on the taskbar.

-There is apparently a way to get sound working. See here:

Qole,

Bummer, I was getting ready to try OpenOffice Base when I realized it wasn't installed. I tried installing it with apt-get but that led to a series of upgrades that ended up leaving me with a broken OOo. I am now re-downloading the image. Could I make a request for OpenOffice Base for the next image. Please ... ; o))

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

rm42: OpenOffice base wasn't working, so I didn't include it. I wish they'd fix OpenOffice so that we could upgrade safely... :(

MisterSorin: debian-m5-v2-rootfs.tgz is for installing into a dedicated partition. You want debian-m5-v2.img.ext2.bz2 instead. Sorry you're having such a rough time of it. Generally those times, for me, are also good learning experiences, though...

andyph666: The N900 doesn't have a concept of "minimizing" an application. You go to the dashboard (Ctrl-backspace if there's no other way) and select an app to show on the screen.

I suspected as much. Well, at least you were able to come out with an image on a fully functional state.

I thought he was talking about minimizing applications inside LXDE, which does allow for minimizing apps as I explained above. Oh well, one of us gave him the answer he was looking for.

rm42: "they" in this case are the Debian openoffice.org maintainers.

Can someone file a good bug over at Debian about this? You can come back here and post a link to your bug if you need support from your fellow armel distro users!

EDIT: You would need to install and use the "reportbug" app.

About the problems in upgrading openoffice.org, I have found the following from the debian and the ubuntu bug trackers:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=562867
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...rg/+bug/417009

and also this comment:
http://old.nabble.com/OpenOffice-for...d26882770.html

Seems a nasty bug.
We better keep secured a tgz of our debian rootfs! :)

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

debernardis: Well done. It looks like we only had OpenOffice because they use a kludgy workaround, which no longer works.

The Ubuntu bug is wonderful! It gives us a workaround! All you need is to copy one file from a working openoffice.org install to the broken one, and everything works again!

The magic file is: /usr/lib/ure/lib/libgcc3_uno.so

I have tested and confirmed that this works. Also, it seems like the upgraded version starts a lot faster for me!

EDIT: I definitely see the speed increases you were talking about with the new version. One minute to a responsive OpenOffice writer document!
