Hmm, the browser does rotate, but when u try virtual keyboard it switches to landscape again. Any way to rotate it?

That's what I did the first time around, reboot, file manager, double click on "Office Space.mp4".

I just noticed they fixed the browser page-up and page-down functions. The previous version didn't adjust the scrolling page size when you zoomed or adjusted the font size. Excellent fix. Now to do the ol' page up/down edit for the +/- buttons...

yea too bad :( i was hoping they would implement this in the conversation and ovi map as well

I just installed the update via OTA. It was fast and no issues at all.

After the reboot it is more faster and the OVI maps also has some improvements and GPS tracker is so cool.

But i just want to know except browser what are all the other applications that will work in portrait mode?

It could be that hulu.com added some ridiculous version checking just recently, but I do not know.

Hulu has recently changed their requirement to Flash 10. When I got N900 could also use HULU (not very well but it worked) but a few weeks later Hulu started with "Flash 10" only. So not really a N900 bug... Flash 10 is unfortunately so unstable that HULU desktop client break down every 2-3 hours...

Agreed! I think they must be in trouble with their BT performance. I hope not though. It is useless to me as well.

Calendar
Nothing new here, still very limited -> thus crap:
-No copy/paste of events
-No possibility to remove single event from repeated events.
-No advanced settings of eg. repeat monthly: day/date?
-What's with the lines showing your events in the monthly view? They don't even show if the event is at morning or evening! Finding an open space for an event/appointment from monthly view is way too slow and frustrating!
-Try to create an event and select that the event is ending next weeks Wednesday ... you'll get the timescroller (or how do you call it?). Now what's the date for that day? Hell, I don't know! I need to cancel the event creation and go see the monthly view to see the date! >:(
The calendar is simply awful to use. It needs a lot of updates to get it usefull ... or maybe somebody with programming skills should do a whole new calendar for N900!
Calendar SUX, agreed. I guess nobody uses Calendar on their Device except me and you!

Why would I want to use the browser in portrait mode? The only thing portrait mode would be useful for is messaging and navigating through the OS.

For example in here in portrait mode you can easily speed read threads easily. You see thread topics more on one eyefull. Some webpages are optimized for portrait mode for example nokia store.

So it depends on webpage you are viewing.

But its true that it should be enabled at least in mediaplayer, conversations, menus. Places where you quite often would also like to use your phone with one hand.

Besides all technical discussion:

The best changelog I have ever seen:
  • separated in sections
  • separated in nokia items and maemo.org items
  • direct links to bugzilla

That really is a big step again for Nokia in the right direction to work with the community!

No such changelog can be seen for android or iphone updates.

That's why I buy a maemo device - not only because of current hardware or software features.

I buy it because bugs can be adressed, viewed for everyone and finally adressed to a offical release.
That's socialising a device in the community way.

Absolut great job.

Creating that changelog is absolutly worth.

I would also like to thank for changelog in wiki. There was even diffs. Amazing i would say :) First time i have seen this kind of information from phone company.

Still i have to say that putting warning about that its not possible revert back to old firmware would make it even better.

Re: PR1.1 Feedback?

Here's issues i have noticed so far:
*The quality of recorded video from n900 has definitely gone worst. the zooming has got little smoother i guess but not quite there yet. I tried to get video information from the MediaInfo software I have in my laptop but it displays nothing but just the size of the file but for videos recorded prior the update, it shows all infos.
*Mediaplayer widget in the desktop doesn't respond to play button.

These are what I've noticed so far and 'll keep adding as I encounter. However, loved the web auto rotate thing.

This is ridiculous... youtube still muti-tasking but not as smooth any more. And where the heck is Flash 10?

In my point of view firmware 42.11 is much better comparing to the performance of this 51.1 firmware. The only good thing with this firmware is... the MS Exchange 2003 is now working just fine.

1. Install 'rootsh' package (you need to connect to internet over VPN to install rootsh)
2. Open X Terminal
3. Enter 'sudo gainroot'
4. Enter 'mv /etc/udhcpc/libicd_network_ipv4.script.dpkg-dist /etc/udhcpc/libicd_network_ipv4.script'
5. Create file '/etc/maemo-dhcp.d/60_vpnc'
6. Add the following code in /etc/maemo-dhcp.d/60_vpnc:

Code:

#!/bin/sh -e
if route -n | grep -e "^0\.0\.0\.0" | grep -q tun0; then
    route -n | grep -e "^0\.0\.0\.0" | grep $interface | awk '{print $2}' > /tmp/vpnc_route
    ip=`cat /var/run/vpnc/defaultroute | cut -f3 -d' '`
    if [ -z $ip ]; then
        killall vpnc
    else
        if route -n | grep -e "^0\.0\.0\.0" | grep -q $ip; then
            route delete default $interface
        fi
    fi
fi

7. In X Terminal enter 'chmod +x /etc/maemo-dhcp.d/60_vpnc'
8. Reboot the device

I haven't upgraded yet, so I would be interested in knowing whether de-installing vpnc before the upgrade to 1.1, and re-installing thereafter would solve this problem. Or would one have to add the above /etc/maemo-dhcp.d/60_vpnc anyway to make PR1.1 compatible with vpnc_0.5.8-0m5_armel.deb?

This package seems to be in need of a fix, but it also seems to me that this package is not take care of really by anybody (two weeks ago I filed a bug report on this package at garage.maemo.org, which did not produce any response). That's rather unfortunate as there seem to be quite a number of people depending on vpnc to connect to a Cisco concentrator at their work place.

Portrait mode support is and should be application specific. If you mean portrait for desktop, that could be feasable. Still portrait mode for desktop makes desktop somewhat limited. E.g. you can't have widgets with width greater than 400p and you need some kind of snap to grid functionality to re-position widgets between landscape and portrait mode. Alternatively you could set the positions manually for both modes - which actually sounds better to me.

Uninstallation of vpnc_0.5.8-0m5_armel.deb leaves the hack in file '/etc/udhcpc/libicd_network_ipv4.script'. You anyway need to use the 'mv' command to fix the file. I actually recommend nut uninstalling vpnc. By creating file '60_vpnc' your old vpnc should work. If you reinstall vpnc, it again hacks /etc/udhcpc/libicd_network_ipv4.script and you can be in trouble again if some future firmware wants to change the file.

One alternative is of course to flash the device, but with any linux competence the manual steps should be the easiest alternative.

here is another way :

open web browser with keyboard slide out then call your phone ... close the keyboard, turn the phone into portrait and voila :D

Thanks a lot for the advice!

I'm actually still uncertain whether to update to PR1.1 in view of the problems that I saw reported with WIFI connectivity and SSH problems,

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...296#post472296 and
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=40567

and the fact that upgrading to PR1.1 cannot be undone because of FW issues. I'm too happy with how things are working under PR1.0.1

Re: PR1.1 Feedback?

Love it, Works but one thing i noticed after flashing this firmware,

1) it does not really wipe everything. When I reinstall the app eg the weather widget, the icon stay blue until I have to shutdown and restart it, else I will just see a blue square box icon.

2) Also, I was freak out when the firmware update completed with prompt "Update Succesfully" and then I try to reboot it for the first time, I cannot access to the apps and it is blank, and i only can access to the apps on the deskstop. So what I do was restart it another tme (reboot), then everything back to normal. Phew!!!!!.

Love this firmware...Nokia doing a great jobs, look forward for more updates :>

timperi, when you have those issues (or rather force them by turning powermanagement back on), could you have a look at the output of the dmesg command and compare it to the one provided in the Bugzilla entry?

I turner on the powermanagement back on (to the maximum) and tested this thing several times.

I don't know the exact time of inactivity it takes to freeze the wlan connection, but 10 minutes seem to do it every time.

There are no messages regarding the wlan in dmesg after the network is frozen.

Here's a cut out from the end of the dmesg:
Code:

[  63.833618] wlan0: authenticate with AP 00:1d:73:ee:bf:c0
[  63.835906] wlan0: authenticated

[  63.838897] wlan0: associated

[ 1049.558654] slide (GPIO 71) is now closed
[ 1060.464782] slide (GPIO 71) is now open

I did a ping www.google.fi after 80.339660, worked fine.
I waited 10-12 minutes, picked up the phone, tried to repeat the ping, but it doesn't work anymore. (after this i saved the dmesg output.)
Nothing network related works before i reconnect the wlan.

I don't update yet, but this may be just result of Nokia response to "choppy audio problem" - multitasking may degrade the sound.

Unfortunately the change of /etc/udhcpc/libicd_network_ipv4.script by vpnc IS NEEDED! Without it you may have a problem of access to VPN DNS. vpnc add some stuff into /etc/udhcpc/libicd_network_ipv4.script which allows your access to VPN DNS.

So, - uninstall and reinstall vpnc... and remember the problem for next release.

I slowly get it: juaalto's fix puts what vpnc added to /etc/udhcpc/libicd_network_ipv4.script into a separate script. I don't understand though whether it is completely equivalent to do so. If it is, then this solution would have the advantage that future Maemo releases would not have the same problem again. One would have to just watch out what a potential upgrade of vpnc might bring. I've also posted a bug report on vpnc, two weeks ago, but so far without any reaction - so we might be seeing more releases from Nokia before vpnc stabilizes.

The code is some equivalent, but I can't say about /etc/maemo-dhcp.d because in PR1.0 or PR1.0.1 nothing refers to that directory. I hope juaalto knows something more about udhcpc in PR1.1 and it uses that directory to run startup scripts from it. PR1.0/1.0.1 doesn't have this at all.
