I can only access what the YouTube API provides. I am not using any of the 'most viewed' feeds atm. 'Most popular' is what is used now. Also, if I provide the feed that you want, what about those that prefer the existing one? I can't please everyone. ;)

I'm pretty sure that you can't vote for applications in extras-devel. It's down to me to decide when to promote it to testing, then you can vote for it. :)

Is there a reason that the downloads window isn't availible from the start screen? I can't find it in the menu either..

It's becomes available when you place a video in the download queue, which is done from the video info window that you get to by clicking on an item in the video list. There's no purpose is giving you access to an empty download window.

thankyou for your work marxian. it is very refreshing to see a developer get so involved with the end users and take on board all the feedback. you have a good sense of what is right - so know whatever you do is appreciated.

just updated to latest version and theres no more 360p and 480p stream to choose, wasnt them suppose to be available when mplayer is choosed?

I removed those options for the time being because the framerate is too low when you play the stream in mplayer. I'm working on an internal media player, and I'll hopefully be able to bring back the option to play at least 360p.

First of all: best YouTube client for the N900 so far, thank you.

Secondly: I'd say it would be more important to have that software buffer you talked few posts ago than full built-in player. So far I haven't found a single video which would play "watchable" buffering (I get "buffering" messages every two-four seconds).

cuteTube + KMplayer would be ultimate combo if the buffering issue could be resolved.

I was having trouble signing in with my youtube account, even after trying what was suggested in that A,B,C,D,E post.

No matter what i did I just couldn't sign in. What I eventually tried which was instantly successful was instead of entering:

Username: myusername
Email address: myemail@where-ever.com
Password: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I entered my username again in the Email address field thus:

Username: myusername
Email address: myusername
Password: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I did have my gmail and youtube accounts unlinked, and I had changed my contact email address in the youtube account to something other than a gmail address.

So hope that helps anyone else still having probs.

Thanks for this. I might take a look at the YouTube API source code and see if there's anything I can do, but it might be a server-side issue. If your solution works universally, I could introduce the crude method of first trying the existing login format, and then using the username in place of the email address if it fails.

EDIT: I tried the above solution as a test, and it worked with my accounts (though I didn't experience any issues before), so I'll upload a new build later. Hopefully that will solve any remaining authentication problems.

I'll change the feed to the one you have requested. I may even provide an option to choose any two of the standard feeds to appear on the home window. I did not want to have all of the standard feeds available, as it would clutter the UI, and I suspect most people never use the 'top rated', 'top favourites' etc, since they always produce the same results.

EDIT: I've uploaded a new release to extras-devel, with the feed change and the authentication fix.

I have a youtube account with yahoo email. I am unable to login and getting frustrated after several attempts. Any ideas on what to do next?

Can I ask which version of cuteTube you are using? There shouldn't be any authentication issues using the latest 0.9.1-1 build, which is in extras-devel. You may need to update.

If your using an older version, you can try entering your username instead of your email address, as described in the post above by shazosbourne.

Wow what I difference playing through kmplayer as opposed to the default maemo media player. Anyone experiencing constant buffering messages, quickly ditch media player go with kmplayer/mplayer.

Would you tell us that have you experienced this with wifi and 3g. For me wifi works just fine with default media player and after first bufferings it´s good.

Under IPv6 the application can't log in youtube account. Seems like the version of python on maemo has a bug in HTTPS over IPv6, probably this one:

To everyone There are no problems with authentication, PERIOD!!!
The reason u are unable to login is because either u dont have a gmail account, or your youtube and gmail accounts are not linked...and if they are and still have problems, just unlink and relink them. I had the same problem until i linked my gmail and youtube accounts and it is all perfect eversince!!!:)

Do you have IPv6? If not, how do you know that under IPv6 it works? Like I said, with IPv6 it does not work and the problem is with Python having a bug for HTTPS under IPv6.

That bug was incorrectly filed against Python 2.5. The OP intended to file against 2.3. It's unlikely therefore that the bug is present in Python 2.5, which is what is installed on Maemo 5.

This bug (or another one that acts the same) is in the Python that comes with maemo.

I run this code on my n900 with ipv6 (with ANY https address):

and this is the result:

Same code works fine with IPv4.

BTW: with IPv6, any of the https addresses that fail in Python can be opened without problems in the browser.

In that case, you should contact the maintainer of PyMaemo, since it is not directly related to this application.

Actually the issue seemed to be through wifi. A video was buffering every 5 seconds using maemo media player, but (a 6 minute video) only buffered 3 or 4 times (as opposed to like 100 on maemo media player) using kmplayer.

I already have IPv6 over 3G from TMobile and everything works fine without problems, browsing, email, etc.
Even the Python applications that doesn't require HTTPS work fine under IPv6, just the HTTPS is the problem.

I know that this is not your application's fault, but seem like you are very proficient in python and probably you would find a fix for this faster than the PyMaemo maintainers.

Wrong attitude for these forums buddy.

If you read the posts correctly you will see than many had actually linked and unlinked gmail/youtube accounts and were still having issues.

Full disclosure, I have not read all 23 pages. Every time I launch the app when I am not connected to the internet (wifi or tmobile) it tells me "unable to sign in to your youtube account". But if I launch the app again right after that (now that I am connected) it signs me in. Also if I manually connect to the internet and then start cutetube it signs me in no issue. seems like somehow when it launches and launches the internet connection it is not giving enough time to log in? I don't know the mechanics but that is the behaviour I am experiencing...

I did a quick search but I haven't this requested (might of missed it), would it be possible to have a 'open clip in web browser' or a 'copy url to clipboard' option? This would really help being able to go comment on a video, or passing on the link to a friend...

I introduced a delay upon startup (of 2000ms) before attempting to sign in to the YouTube account. In my tests, this proved to be sufficient, but it's not scientific and in your case it appears that it isn't long enough. The problem in introducing a longer delay is that the user has to wait until they are signed in before they can access their channel. If a user impatiently clicks the 'My Channel' button upon startup, they will get the 'You are not signed in to YouTube' banner.

The proper solution to your problem would be for me to implement a better communication between DBus and cuteTube, so the application can listen for the signal that the device is connected to the internet before attempting to authenticate. That still leaves the issue of the long waiting time, however.

one thing that i started to think is that why maemo/qt seems to not have pull down command buttons. I mean one button that extends and shows more action buttons. Or at least i havent seen that kind of funcionality in any app. Would be great for this app because i do not like too much buttons accesed from top.

I have been considering the automatic loading of more results, and the only possible issue is that it may lead to jerky scrolling, as there will be a delay whilst the application gets more data from the YouTube server.

On the menu extension issue, I'm not sure how that type of menu would behave in Hildon, since I haven't tried it, but the Hildon Style Guide prohibits the use of that type of menu button. The correct way to implement that type of functionality is to raise a dialog when the menu button is pressed.

The feed gathering is already carried out in a separate thread, the point is that is takes a second or two before the next batch of results is returned, so when you hit the end of the existing results there will be a stutter before new results are added.
