No, it is full Debian using ARM (armel). Linux on ARM can run in chroot for Maemo 4, Maemo 5, MeeGo Harmattan (as here), Android (in rooted devices), in some Mini-PC's (with AllWinner A10 processor, for example), etc.

See here a comparison with notebooks running Ubuntu 12.04. Easy Debian on Nokia N9 is very fast.

So basically we are running debian on our machines?

Possible yes. Try it, install Easy Debian on your N9.

You can also run Java inside MeeGo Harmattan, just search this forum.

The use of a chrooted image (for Easy Debian, Harmattan SDK, etc), AFAIK, can't corrupt a partition.

You've used a lot of softwares and tweaks, it is difficult or impossible to know the reason of your MyDocs corruption.

Yes, I have more tweaks, but most are only grafically tweaks.
Maybe it's possible that when in a terminal I had qchrooted maemo or harmattan SDK, clicking the LXDE icon also qchroot Debian image into qchrooted maemo or harmattan SDK /home/usetr/SDK path, corrupting the mounted /home/user/SDK/home/user/MyDocs path, or there is a sort of control to avoid from mounting an image (different or not) again (I mean between command line and desktop image files)?

I experimented with Minecraft back a bit. Firstly, I had trouble logging in, it kept refusing my password. Finally got a login, and it downloaded the files fine. Once past this point, the window blacked out. Minecraft really dislikes OpenJDK, etc. though, so this isn't too surprising. Even if it would work, a keyboard would be necessary, and it'd probably run slowly... not worth it, IMO.

Java isn't a loss overall though, loads of apps work, but games don't seem to, usually.

If you use Debian on your desktop, it's exactly like it. Most programs I've tried work straight off the repositories.

If the image is already mounted, it is detected and a warning message is show.

IMHO, I've never seen an image corrupting a partition. But a little damaged partition can become worse if you use large files (like images of GB) a lot.

Suggestion : fix (reinstall, etc) your N9 partition and try again.

General answer : read the 1st post of this topic. Because :
1) FAQ item (3) explain how to install additional software;
2) item "Using Easy Debian Harmattan" explains that ony inside LXDE the vkb works. See FAQ item (7) for using vkb inside LXDE.

Which "browser" closes ? Iceweasel web browser ?

Is it also possible to use a bluetooth mouse and/or a BT keyboard with touchpad on EasyDebian? I have such a keyboard, but only the keyboard-part works on the N9. The touchpad works fine when pairing the keyboard to my (Linux) nettop or (Windows) desktop, so no weird drivers required for that. How to achieve this on the N9?

Installation went successful until...

Code:

4) download Easy Debian Harmattan : easy-deb-chroot_1.1.0-1harmattan1_armel.deb. Transfer it to some folder (e.g., "/home/user/") in your Nokia N9/N950 and install it by tapping with a file manager, or by typing "dpkg -i easy-deb-chroot_1.1.0-1harmattan1_armel.deb" as root in X-Terminal.
It says installation could not be completed because of problems with dependencies...:( Any hints on this problem?

Redo steps (1)-(3) of manual installation (B). "inception" or "easy-chroot" or "xmimd" wasn't installed, they are needed dependencies for Easy Debian Harmattan using Inception.

Re: [Announce] Easy Debian for MeeGo Harmattan : now with translucent VKB on PR1.3 !

hey!

so, i managed to install all the files on my n9(pr 1.3) and im able to start a program trough the desktop shortcut (gftpd ... after editing the desktop entry "^M" was at the end of every row)

so, this sounds good, but only the first time i start it!

the debian image is chrooted in a loop device (/dev/loop1) under "/.debian" and i cant start any program or even get to the debian command line after its started once:

Quote:

/ # debian
Chroot dir specified: /.debian
/home/user/MyDocs/debian-m5-v3e-Sci-2GB.img.ext2 specified in ~/.chroot
Mounting...
using image file: /home/user/MyDocs/debian-m5-v3e-Sci-2GB.img.ext2
fs type is ext2
Using ext2 file system
mounting /home/user/MyDocs/debian-m5-v3e-Sci-2GB.img.ext2 on loop
Mount failure! /home/user/MyDocs/debian-m5-v3e-Sci-2GB.img.ext2 failed to mount on loop2 mount: mounting /dev/loop1 on /.debian failed: Device or resource busy
Cancelling chroot...
trying to umount the device gives:

Quote:

/ # umount -f -d /.debian/
umount: can't forcibly umount /.debian: Device or resource busy
but it looks like its mounted correct:

Quote:

/ # ls -al /.debian/

EDIT: ok ... i managed to chroot back into the debian system through "chroot /.debian" after i done the "opensh -s" ... but is this the only way??
and i figured out that my filesystem is read-only - so i cant install packages or update the apt sources! :/
(i remounted the fs already: (as root) mount -o remount,rw /.debian/ ... and it shows up as rw in mtab)

Question is about set of wirelles PC keyboard and mouse connected to USB wirelles stick with kind of frequency of 246xxxx that is available in shops...then the n9 has all this radio conections...is it posible to use a set of this hardware or i em asking to much!
BTW. thank you to developers for making this posible to our gorgeous N9. :-)

Re: [Announce] Easy Debian for MeeGo Harmattan : now with translucent VKB on PR1.3 !

I installed easy debian on my n950 PR1.3 (debian-m5-v3e-Sci-2GB.img.ext2) and I am having an issue with the recognition of the arrow keys of the n950 keyboard.
When I am in LXDE and I try to navigate in the menus or in a text field the arrow keys don't work. However, when I click on the geany icon on the meego app launcher (not in LXDE) the arrow keys work fine both in the menus and in the text field.
How can I fix it?

How do I activate the translucent virtual keyboard in LXDE?

Thanks!

3) Javispedro solution for using MeeGo virtual keyboard (vkb), now the v1.2 is translucent and works with PR1.2/PR1.3. Download the new xmimd_1.2_armel.deb package to some folder (e.g., "/home/user/") in your Nokia N9/N950 and install it using the X-Terminal :
$ devel-su
type the root password, then :
# cd ~user
# dpkg -i xmimd_1.2_armel.deb

When I had Easy Debian Installed in Open Mode, I installed xmimd_1.2 but I had not translucent keyboard, but only the black opaque MeeGo keyboard.

I already installed xmimd before installing easy-deb-chroot. I reinstalled xmimd with ariadne sh and now it works!
Thank you An9 for the direction.

death_jax: Have you tried to launch LXDE using the "Debian LXDE" icon and not the "LXDE opVKB" ( = LXDE opaque vkb).
Maybe you should check that the versions of easy-chroot, xmimd and easy-deb-chroot are the most recent. In addition, maybe the image file you are using also matters.

Anyone know how to fix the arrow keys issue I mentioned earlier?

I installed the Open Mode version (the latest version) of the above software, and also with Debian LXDE the keyboard still remained opaque. Maybe was the Open Mode version?
If in the future will install again Easy Debian I will check ;)

Both Inception and Open Mode versions of Easy Debian Harmattan have translucent vkb if xmimd_1.2 is used.

Have you tapped the icon "FixDebImg" as cited in item 2 of "Choosing a Debian Image" ? See post #135 for details about what "FixDebImg" does.
See also FAQ #7.

Re: [Announce] Easy Debian for MeeGo Harmattan : now with translucent VKB on PR1.3 !

rcolistete: First of all thanks for your efforts and contribution to this amazing project!
Now, I tapped the "FixDebImg" (when I used the debian img for the first time) and everytime I get a different result.
When I only turn the n950 on and tap the "FixDebImg" icon I get a terminal saying in red:
Quote:

Warning: could not start program 'fixdebimg.sh' with arguments 'fixdebimg.sh'.
After I tap the "Debian LXDE" icon and log out of LXDE and then tapping the "FixDebImg" icon I get a terminal (text is green again) that says near the end:
Quote:

.../home/userMyDocs/debian-m5-v3e-sci-2GB.img.ext2 mounted on loop0
.
..
...
....
synching the chroot...
mv: can't rename '/.debian/ usr/share/X11/xkb' :directory not empty
Updating the /etc/mtab file...
Everything set up, running chroot...
and immediately the terminal is closed.
When I open a terminal and execute "fixdebimg.sh" as root (with devel-su) it asks if aegisctl has the right credentials and then the terminal has a long list of "permission denied" and "operation not permmited" errors.
When I open a terminal and execute "/usr/sbin/aegisctl -s" and after it "fixdebimg.sh", I get a mount failure message: device or resource busy.

Any idea what I should do about it (this really important to me)? :)

Plus, when I tried to install some packages I found out that I can't launch a terminal in easy debian (Roxterm gives an error window saying "The new terminal's command failed to run" and LXterminal opens but when I press a key it is recognized but immediately deleted so I can't type anything) and thus can't get synaptic package manager to work. I found a workaround by running commands in the debian chroot terminal.

I think aegisctl is not well installed in your N950 due to the error messages cited above.

So I suggest you to repeat step (B.1) of 1st post to install Inception + opensh + aegisctl.

The icon "FixDebImg" is robust : it can be tapped before or after using Easy Debian.

I'm having the same issue as you. Forgive me, but I do not see how you resolved it even though it appears you did so. I have went back through my Inception install multiple time and everything seems to go well but when I try to install easy-deb-chroot_1.1.0-1harmattan1_armel.deb I get the same aeigisctl permissions errors.

BTW. I realize this is my first post and that may raise suspicions as to my N9/Linux familiarity but up until I attempted to install Easy Debian I had never had any issues with anything.

Thanks

Re: [Announce] Easy Debian for MeeGo Harmattan : now with translucent VKB on PR1.3 !

@MLeopard: Don't get me wrong, I am still having a problem with getting the n950 keyboard to work, but it may not be relevant as you are a n9 user.
After the harmattan sdk repository will be online again I will try to reflash the n950 and reinstall easy debian to see if it will solve the problem.

Regarding the aeigisctl permissions errors, have you tried gaining root as "/usr/bin/aegisctl -s"? or checking if you have the right aegis credentials ( like in here:http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=81579&page=37)

Well, I can't say that I know what changed but in a moment of frustration I tapped the LXDE icon and it opened. So problem solved but I don't know how.

1) Choose a Debian image :
There are some options of Debian images, see their detailed description in post #137.
It's recommended to use the most stable image where all Easy Debian icons work, it is a scientific version of Qole's default Easy Debian image, debian-m5-v3e-Sci-2GB.img.ext2.lzma (04/08/2012, 486 MB of download, 2GB after uncompressing, 176 MB available inside it). If downloaded before 04/08/2012, please download it again as it was updated. Copy it to "/home/user/MyDocs/" then, as user in Terminal :
$ cd ~/MyDocs
$ xz -d debian-m5-v3e-Sci-2GB.img.ext2.lzma
It takes 5 minutes to uncompress. Like the Qole's default image (debian-m5-v3e.img.ext), it has : OpenOffice, Iceweasel / Firefox (with Java and Flash), Icedove / Thunderbird, GIMP, Evince (reads PDF, PS and DVI), Leafpad text editor, Synaptic package manager, PC Man file manager, Open Java, Python 2.6.6, sound support & tools.
There are many additional softwares installed, mainly about programming and science :
Abiword, Gnumeric, Geany and gedit programming text editors, gFTP, TeXMaker / TeX, Maxima / wxMaxima and Yacas CAS (Computer Algebra System), Python tools (IPython, NumPy, MatPlotLib, Sympy, etc), gcc/g++ 4.4.5, make, dpkg-dev, etc
I've done with this part, but nothing happen when tap the icon "FixDebImg". then i try to tap the "Debian LXDE" icon to start but the debian didn't start. please help

Hi guys! I'm a newbie in this thread and I wanted to use Easy Debian on my Nokia N9. I followed the steps stated in the first post on how to install manually. Everything went through, I have all the 20 Icons of Easy Debian but I'm still going to download the Debian image ext2 or ext3. I just want to know whether I have done it the right way. Here's a screenshot I took when I installed the easy-deb-chroot_1.1.0-1harmattan1_armel.deb, please tell me if it's correct. Thanks :)

i have another question that maybe stupid but...

why create desktop shortcuts to openoffice if you cannot use the vkb if you open it this way?

is this only to use it with a bluethooth keyboard?

@mcbook: N950?
a bluethooth keyboard is also an option (I guess you have a n9).

Possible advantages to open softwares outside LXDE :
1) run them full screen and to view documents, etc, even without vkb;
2) use with Bluetooth external keyboards, the compatibility (working keys, etc) is better than inside LXDE;
3) use the physical keyboard of N950, the compatibility (working keys, etc) is better than inside LXDE.

I really use cases (1) and (2) on my N9.

Also, it is easier to remove icons than create them, from user's point-of-view. The FAQ #2 explains how to remove icons.
