So in one of the videos OS seems to be running on N950 - that means it should be easy to get it working on N9, right? It looks great and as a ver 0.001 or something similar is quite stunning. Let's wait for 1.0 and hope it will have enough time to polish all the rough edges!

Unfortunately, I am not as impressed as when I saw harmattan for the first time. But I guess we will have to wait and see for the final product, both hardware and software.

Hopefully Android applications will work flawlessly, otherwise I think it will be hard to compete.

OT: No one else thought this was hilarious? :

Come oooooooooon. Is the guy(the first guy) on stage awake :D

EDIT: Finally a guy that is trying to own the stage even without presentation. It sounds like he likes what he talking about :)

David should be jolla's Communication Manager...at least the days when jolla has presentations on stages/and events. He did a great job.

The SDK presentation going at the moment.

http://slush.fi/stream/?view=event-stage#a

Somehow it tilts me hard, that all foreign Jolla empolyees pronounce the name perfectly just like a finn ('yollaŽ) and all finnish employees pronounce it like an english speaker ('dzolla'). Guys, at least decide how you pronounce the name.

How the usability of my device will change compared to what? Compared to my N900 or my Symbian-powerd C7 where I have dozens of widgets to interact with right on my homescreens?

Whatever Jolla says about this revolutionary concept seems like marketingbabble to me. What they have is a half-balked cross between a functional widget and a fluid, flexible multitasking view. In the end, neither of those works really well from what I see in the videos.

Having a mini-version of my media player right on my desktop makes my yawn. When did we first have this? On the 770 in 2005? Come on. What I need on the homescreen is a RSS-reader, shortcuts to 5-10 of my favorite contacts (indicating their online status), an email inbox, a scrolling statusnet widget, weather, on/off switches for bluetooth, dlna, nfc, FM-transmitter an thelike, and then of course shortcuts to my favorite applications and websites. I want to pin those to the homescreen, arrange them to my liking and be sure they never change position. I want the contacts shortcuts to be small squares, the size of my fingertip, showing only a person's face, while the email inbox needs to strech over the whole screen width so I can always read the whole subject.

I know I cannot really live without these features because I miss them on the N9. So much, in fact, that I only use the device once a month or so to give it yet another try.

Now they try to re-invent the wheel, which is OK. But I don't think it's necessary that they tell us how groundbreaking and new it's gonna be. :(

+1
but I have to say that UIQ2 was also great at its time.
This modern swipe and gesture UIs are or can be good but since finger movements can be patented :confused::confused: lerning curve can get really annoying so by the time I figure out some basic thing I already lost interest in the damn thing.

Yes, Maemo5 is excellent. Noone denies it. But Harmattan's ergonomics are out of this world. Cannot be compared to any other OS.

Let's hope BB10 & Sailfish top it.

More logical and intuitive back swipe would be from right-to-left, and not left-to-right. Plus I agree with what others said, the effects does not convey what is going on. They should work on that.

HELLASISGREECE 2012-11-22 11:13

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

That's because the awesome swipe effect we love on Harmattan is owned by Nokia.

Sailfish's swipe effect is similar to Nemo's

As Jolla said on Twitter, the OS can technically be ported to the N9 but you will NOT have the same experience as in Jolla devices. Which means some features may not be available in our N9's and N950's. But as I saw in the demo, it's already enough for me.. Let's see what is this experience that we won't have.

There is only one thing I do not like about Jolla and Sailfish. In an interview, the CEO said that the device should be ready in summer 2013. I was hoping for something more like February or March.

No, no. He said 'before' summer 2013, so it should be something close to April or May..

I still don't understands how jolla working with mer versions.

Will every sailfish OS has a version Id for sailfish and one for mer? Will that mer id be possible to diff with the latest code change in mer version or will they run mer in a seperate line/branch during development for every os version?

Just watching presentation now. Didn't someone say they were calling Kratos to rip that head off?
His head is causing camera to go out of focus.

Hey guys, I'm a machinist student and I've become pretty good at using Mastercam to make parts.
I can take any simple (meaning only a few colors or very simple geomaterically) or black and white image from google images
and vectorize it and turn it into a real world product of metal.

Here are some examples
http://s65.beta.photobucket.com/user/gbbaker/story/3815
I forgot to take a picture of some of the projects I did and I am backlogged about 10 projects which are either completed in Mastercam or partially completed in Mastercam as lots of people want me to make them a part including the instructors.

I need some good quality black and white images of the Jolla logo as a bitmap or png so I can convert it to vector format (.dxf) using inkscape (free program) and open it up in Mastercam and turn it into an actual keychain made of aluminum.

I think the way to make a keychain is to use the Jolla image to cut out the logo about .100 or .075 of an inch deep into some .5 thick aluminum and then mirror the image on the X axis in Mastercam so it's backwards and then cut that pattern into 2 pieces of 1 inch thick aluminum standing on edge in between the vices with the vices closed so as to make a custom clamp that I can place the jolla logo that I just cut out in there upside down so I can just face the top of it off (that means get rid of the excess flat material).

Yes, because of limitation of the N9 HW.. Sailfish OS planned to publish better HW (dual core or something), but i am very impressed how well it running on the N9/50

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

Well.. this is good news!
First don't watch the presenting Jolla video, expecting a Nokia production!!! it's a very lo-fi production.. but that's okay. :)

Not being a fan of the N9, I too was disappointed that it looked like the N9.
But it's true hildon has a learning curve, so it was obvious it was going to look like Mer/Meego... that's not a bad thing.

As other have pointed Jolla's stack (IMO) is 100% open source.
Which N9/00 weren't.

The UI, isn't as ground breaking, but it's not a step backwards but a small step forward.
Nice UI:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_c_Bq...M&feature=plcp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHn3q...eature=related

I think people were expecting a finished product, but Jolla are smart releasing early and getting community involvement.

I'm optimistic sailfish will successes, and i'm sure will be forked providing for different verticals (lol) and selling more HW.

SDK video is the better vid from the launch.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrwYyN-vNVo&feature=plcp
Harri Hakulinen needs work presenting, but hey
David Greaves is a good presenter
Marko Mattila makes it look easy.

I like the 'unlike' branding? they should push that it's funny but true and clever.

Not really sure, why they target/focus on China.. makes it feel kinda cheap and is discriminatory!
TMI IMO, we don't need to know they have a big contract with a telco...

I'll buy a N9 just to install this!
I don't understand why they didn't get N9 user involvement (installable image/instructions) on launch - instant user base... maybe they're not ready? the SDK isn't out yet.

Very exciting!!

Dead.. gone... Hildon is nice, but it's too heavy and there is no good vsync for it. It COULD be awesome, but support.... not so good again..

Well, I've recently started with RPM packaging for Nemo and would say I like it quite a lot more than Debian packaging.

Just that all the packaging info resides in the specfile, meaning you don't have to reprocess the package every time you make a change and wrangle with a dozen of different files makes creation of new packages or repackaging of existing ones much easier. :)

Also the Mer/Nemo packager, called zypper seems to be quite advanced. For example, it can be used to add new repositories (zypper ar) directly from the command line, which I think apt-get is not able to do. This is quite handy for adding some of the many interesting COBS repos.

Thats propably bit optimistic.

Our summer comes late, is barely warm and leaves soon after it arrives. I would say that late May or early June is what they meant by summer.

OK guys, I have a questions about the multitasking on this OS.
Will it be like Maemo/N9?
yes I said N9 and not MeeGo,
AFAIK, N9 was "half Maemo, half MeeGo" So it still keep Maemo Multitasking capabilities.
What I mean is, People like me who love Maemo for its multitasking capabilities wait to see what it will look like, but all I see on these demo are something like HTC Sence (I hope am wrong).

Jolla Answers Your Sailfish Questions

-Apps can be closed long press and then close
-At this point UI is optimised to work with 9 apps open but their looking into an alternative to expand on that
-You can come back to home screen from any direction(each of 4 edges)
-No landscape mode for the launcher at the moment

Designs are still work in progress and improving!

And they should be. At least "kill swipe" should be implemented like in N9. Same to landscape launcher.

Or Jolla, just make it open so that community can fix those when needed. (I want taskbar, I want some apps locked to certain place to act as "widgets", I want custom size for app window when app is minimized, I want sane animation (like in Harmattan) to be displayed when swiping away from app...)

EDIT: well, it looks at least promising that they would make it open: https://twitter.com/JollaMobile/stat...36651494825984

Good things comes always late , sadly.

Harmattan (N9) was way late. Same with BB10..we've yet to see it.
Same with Sailfish...

damn.. in the meantime... Android becomes more popular by the day and Symbian is shrinking.

bad era to be a google "hater" & a smartphone enthusiast.
