While I like the idea of an OS like that, please keep in mind that it is the traffic from and to the phone that is being spied on. So yes it is a good starting point (and selling point for jolla), but I doubt that it would stop anyone (you know who) from spying on you - not without strong crypto for everything.

There is no such thing as "closed source strong crypto". Just think Microsoft. I assume, even using PGP (GnuPG) in MS Windows may be pointless.

In other news, Chairman of Jolla showed first pictures taken with (the nonexistent) Jolla on his twitter. :)

Hard to say anything of the picture quality, doesn't look anything special.

That's the entire point of my post. I'm still buying the Jolla device even though the specs aren't bleeding edge (none of the other Maemo/MeeGo devices ever were bleeding edge come to think of it) - because I want to help them reach that (arbitrary) 500,000 goal to make the next device(s) possible.

Not sure if already mentioned somewhere. But seems that Jolla updated their website again and added more infos about the device.

http://jolla.com/your-jolla/ --> second "scroll-down page".

Could you post that new info because MicroB is unable to scroll in this page..............................

Ufff,
i hoped that with lower hardware the battery-time will be longer but its less then my loved N9 in the specifications.

So where ist the benefit? Lower Screen resolution, lower CPU but also lower battery lifetime.
So please Jolla y like to buy my pre-ordered jolla with the other half - bigger Battery.

I am suprised people has not yet cried about this:

Re: Official specs of Jolla phone surface

Talk times seem quite short unless they are realistic vs hypothetical with others. Stand-by is ok:

Jolla:
Talk & stand-by time (approx.): 7.7/5.5hrs (GSM/3G) & 500hrs.

N9 (gsmarena)
Stand-by Up to 380 h (2G) / Up to 450 h (3G)
Talk time Up to 11 h (2G) / Up to 7 h (3G)

Lumia 720 (gsmarena)
Stand-by (2G) / Up to 520 h (3G)
Talk time Up to 23 h 20 min (2G) / Up to 13 h 20 min (3G)

It was clear already from the photos that it is a 10mm thick device. However, maximum thickness of Nokia N9 is 12,1mm, so it is not so bad.

Edited:
Nokia Lumia 920 that has also 4,5 inch screen has following spec:
Dimensions 130.3 x 70.8 x 10.7 mm, 99 cc (5.13 x 2.79 x 0.42 in)
Weight 185 g

Yes, but lumia has better camera so not comparable. However after some check what my N9 is I realized Jolla is thinner.

But question is if its with or without OTH...

"Standard microUSB" means microUSB-B or more proper microUSB-A?

Morpog 2013-09-30 21:10

Re: Official specs of Jolla phone surface

micro usb a would be insane, given that every charger accessory out there is for micro usb b.

shmerl 2013-09-30 21:16

Re: Official specs of Jolla phone surface

May be. I usually charge my devices from PC anyway :)

microUSB-A makes sense to allow using standard cables for host mode.

Re: Official specs of Jolla phone surface

I don't think there is such thing as micro usb a ports. There is a micro usb ab though (N810, E7) that works fine for charging with μUSB B cables and also works for host mode with μUSB A plugs.

shmerl 2013-09-30 21:33

Re: Official specs of Jolla phone surface

Yes, they are usually AB combined. I meant that.

no Problem.... buy a Motorola RAZR Maxx Akku with 3300mAh and put it in a Other-half Backcover and than you have 5400mAh :)

I have never used swap and never felt like 1GB was not enough. So all this talk about 2GB - or even 1GB - on what is by design a secondary device at best being "not enough" or "mid range" sounds like a mindless rant to me.

True story, some colleagues call me to reinstall/repair their PCs and some of them have 256 or 512 MB RAM PCs AND they have never complained about RAM. I dont understand what is that complaining about 1 GB RAM on a MOBILE DEVICE. What will you do on it? Play GTA V? Use Pinnacle Studio? Maybe Photoshop RAW images?

NO, Im sure you cant do those things that really need LOTS of RAM. Android needs such device because of its memory leaks, bad optimization, blah blah... Just hope for a good OS, if so 1 GB will be completely enough for it. Forget about 2GB & quad/hexa-core on a mobile device

Agree on that. At home I use an old 2006 Mac Mini with 2Gb Ram (originally 1Gb). The system runs perfectly with Ubuntu 13.04, incl. heavy multi-tasking - no problems at all. But my MacBook (late 2011 model) runs OSX 10.8 with 4Gb - forget about good performances. It's slow and laggy as soon as I do some real work on it and have several programs running. So there's a problem with the software, not hardware...

So if Sailfish OS is done well (not like OSX for example) I really don't see a problem with the given specifications. I trust Jolla: They do their job with a certain passion for the product. I don't believe they would sell a phone they weren't enthusiastic about.

I would like to see how Sailfish performs on commonly used task:

1. Texting: how is predictive text, how is keyboard, does it come close to iphones? N9 was not on par with competition.

2. Email: does it sync with corporate email, how well is is threaded. N9 crashed all the time with my large inbox.

3. Calendar: will it sync flawlessly with corporate accounts.

The UI is intriguing, but if it fails the simple and commonly used tasks, as N9 unfortunately failed at, then Jolla is history.

I have to agree on that one. Hopefully Sailfish is more polished out of the box in those areas. It doesn't take a quad core or a lot of RAM to manage those tasks either way.

There is some rumours / speculation about Rovio making Angry Birds other half in one finnish paper.

http://www.iltasanomat.fi/digi/art-1288604858538.html

Rovio gives the usual "No comment" comment, ie. not denying or confirming.

5Ghz is missing for wifi and no FM radio :( .

I dont mind the 1GB RAM, it seems enough. But 5GHz wifi is a good plus going forward as 2.4Ghz band gets congested in apartment buildings.
