Re: SailfishOS Update11 discussions

Just got home from work and installed the update, went OK (although gave me a moment of horror when the "Jolla" bootscreen came on twice in a row, so I suspected a reboot loop, but continued to boot fine afterwards).

All working so far, no apparent bugs. New Browser is nice but thanks to the browser-nightlies from openrepos I already knew that ;)

Thanks, that seems to have worked. Although it has also brought back all the things I had previously removed, such as Tutorial :)

I immediately got an upgrade notification, trying attemp #2...

EDIT:
Phew, this was the most painful update so far, but I finally got there on attempt #3.
#2 ended up in the same "cannot update now, try later" screen after the reboot as #1, but this time SSH saved the day.

Man I need to stop doing updates on the bus/at work (especially early opt-in ones). I even forgot to uninstall all patches, but seem to be the lucky one so far

Updated to the latest Opt in version. Is the battery draining sooner now? Anyone noticed?

I haven't noticed it yet .. battery life seems to be the same and it always drains faster when aliendalvik is running . Ram management is pretty good though in this update .

Didn't notice anything strange so far, but my Jolla was only off the charger for some hours in the evening after the update. Will keep an eye on it today.

I don't get your problem, battery isn't draining faster for me, it's the opposite.....

Also everything feels more smooth, app startup time seems to be faster too and ram management (OOM...) is alot better. Weather app in events screen is also cool.

Re: SailfishOS Update11 discussions

This update is by far the best in ages :) It restores some faith to Jolla

love the
-weather widget
-ambience color change
-overall smoothness
-maybe apps dont get force shut down that much now?!

hmm, Battery would seem to run out faster, but I noticed this already after the update before this latest one.
From event screen if you click a notification of android telegram message, the app shuts down, not yet fixed, uuh...

Can you describe please, why

it updates all repositories and download all packages with newer versions from them. So what is wrong?

Thx

i did what you did, no issues here though. when i ran the version --dup it simply installed one package for alien-dalvik

My Jolla has seen some serious drawer time since the latest update that featured these out of memory handling "improvements" that looked as if they were the brainwork of a nervous sales and marketing department urgently needing the device to resemble Android more closely

So before going to play with the new ambiance color effects etc I went off testing multitasking, and while the out of memory agent is less aggressive I saw IRC disconnected, calender and calc being closed etc..

As far as multitasking is concerned, it feels like a step forward after two steps back.

Seriously? You opted-in into an RC of an update (early access) and get mad, because something does not work for you?!

BTW: I don't have a problem with notifications at all, and have not heard of anyone else having such problems.
Try factory reset.

To the update:
I simply love it, my Jolla is so smooth and fast - very amazing :)
I find the new weather widget very nice - a bit more spacing around it and some nice animations (especially when the values are changing) and it would be perfect.
Warehouse is usable again for me, no more freezing.

Question:
Is it just me, ore are the spacings in pulley menus bigger now? I have the feeling, that the pulley menus are now longer than before the update.

Updated my girlfiend's Jolla with "The First One" TOH attached. First go to account settings and checked box. After 5 minutes goes to Settings and checked for updates - update appeared. Downloaded and installed successfully.

I have had these settings applied at boot since vaarainjärvi, and they have been working for me, no autoclose apps, no drastic out of memory situations even when massively multitasking.

Code:

#!/bin/bash

echo "80" > /proc/sys/vm/swappiness
echo "32 24" > /proc/sys/vm/lowmem_reserve_ratio
echo "100" > /proc/sys/vm/percpu_pagelist_fraction
echo "98304" > /proc/sys/vm/extra_free_kbytes

echo "0,0,0,0,0" > /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree

I knew you love Jolla, but ... ? :-)

Anyway, I think it is a great update. Everything is smooth again.

Weather app is good, but need settings for it. It shows the Weather in Celsius only. In USA (we, the unsupported countries) use Fahrenheit. Or I haven't figured out how to change it.

I don't think I see any difference in battery usage. It is about 6 hours since I unplugged and I am at 71%. Pretty day-after-update heavy usage. Looks normal to me.

Coderus, I don't get the voicemail notification anymore. The uninstalled and reinstalled, but no luck. It worked great before the update, I really appreciate if you take a look at it when you get a chance.

Thank you very much for the tip. But why should I have to tweak my device to have normal behaviour (in line with Nokia legacy, advertisements and previous behavior of Sailfish)?

I get a headache thinking about having to root / jailbreak Android for normal usage and that is one of the reasons I choose for Jolla.

This is giving Jolla phone a bad name and is at best not creating a nice showcase to lure Android users to move to Sailfish.
Probably those Android users enjoy less aggressive application killing on their 2GB - 3GB RAM power phones.

Other observation:

Opened 12 applications, a dirty mix of native and Android ones and left them idle for about 4-5 hrs.

No significant battery drain. OK!

Re: SailfishOS Update11 discussions

Hmm I don't really love the update! Not that I am really unlucky, there a lot of improvements. Update worked fine most things work smooth.
But I have formated my SD-Card with BTRFS and shared space with android. That doesn't work anymore. Not that I haven't expected that. But I don't really understand, why there is still no official solution for that problem. I hope that they will have a solution when they release the tablet and sailfish OS 2.0

So all in all Update is nice, but I don't want to tinker after every update.

2 Attachment(s)
My first lipstick crash after update.

I had about 12 apps open for a while. All native except WhatsApp.

I think I closed one app and all of a sudden the open apps screen froze. App covers do not respond to touch, so I could not switch to apps or use swipe actions. I can scroll up and down, but screen does not clear the open apps covers. App covers shows through on the lock screen and icons.

Re: SailfishOS Update11 discussions

I too have btrfs formatted microsd card on my Jolla and it is "shared" with aliendalvik user space.
Or used to be as it is nether working for me.
But I got unlucky after pre-Update 11 and device is rebooting frequently whenever the shared microSD is in place.
Even if I systemctl disabled the mounting script.
Same occurred with after Update 10 and I had to factory reset phone and format the microSD card.
I can't wait for Jolla tablet arrival so I can dumb phone media to it.
But the new fixes and improvements in this update are great and my phone is stable enough without microsd.
Nevermore btrfs mircoSD and extra tinkering.

I can't blame you. Using global settings for individual apps settings was a Bad Design Choice [tm].

I think the bigger issue is that third party Harbor apps can't use the global application settings menu, so most app develpers don't use it and users don't know where it is because no applications use it. :)
