I was saying they don't have to target the same segment that Jolla is, going by their track-record, I'd "assume" they're going for a different one.

I don't know, I asked if we should pm administration for the new subscription about threads to move. But when I think about it reporting might be better.

Another smart move would be to merge this with the other huge sailfish now on video thread. No point in having two huge threads.

I reported that post when I 1st posted it, now we just have to wait for the mods.

I tried to get that done ages ago but was met with resistance to the idea...
They're both just "general news" threads really, neither are terribly specialised.

this isn't a jolla thread anymore if you ask me, too off-topic for the most parts....
so thread no moving

Cool, although the other thread that someone moved to Sailfish sub-forum is no different, so long as Dave's around ;)

I agree with you, but I also disagree with you.

It's not just 100% procent jolla in this thread, but consider the length, this thread has more jolla info than the thread in the Jolla sub. The Big thread in the Jolla sub is a copy of this one with less then 100% jolla talks. And here comes the smart part: If you have two threads that are simular and both are too long for anyone to read, then merge them to save us the time and thread space.

Ofc you are the moderator, but when we now have new subs, I would defenetly use them and at the same time eliminate multiple threads. But that just me.

That's true, I'm staying as long as I'm needed just to keep the thread on track.

Do you think jolla will/can/dare to show somthing at MWC? Their are pretty big lions their do eat the media attention. But their is also a lot to win to show what you working on over their.

Still no SDK. But it should be available any day now.

Looking like Jolla will be at FOSDEM. So... SDK might be making an appearance and/or more announcements in the next couple of days.

Let's see...

2 things why balancing is not a good idea [to me]:
1. Easier to snatch by people who are fond of other people's belongings (I know this doesn't apply to you, Dave, you must be lonely in the moon ;-) )
2. Easier for the phone to be knocked over while travelling on the train or bus or any other form of public transport at rush hour.

I kind of agree with your point of "the bigger the better" for driving, but then again, the N9 has a bigger screen than any GPS/map device I've seen on any cab so far, so really don't know why you'd want it any bigger *if* you also want to use it as a portable phone?

Or is HTC's idea of selling you an appendage classic phone to connect to the bigger phone that you have taped to your chest or back a better idea?

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones

What have never heard about some stealing the phone from someone hand.

Don't travel with trains so I don't know. But with cars, plans and helis its great.

Pretty lonely at the moon, but if someone tried to grab my phone it probably don't turn out so well for the thief.

Not to do with Sailfish, but still of interest to F/OSS followers

Same here, off-topic but certainly of interest/concern:

Seems their ph(s) is coming much earlier than the original time-frame of late Q4 or early 2014.
Lucky they're only targeting the low-end, initially...

What. are going off topic. You have totally lost it...

Great. That makes Tizen an even bigger chance for success!

Had a short chat with one of their devs after his talk at FOSDEM. They're doing a 'nokia' on this: parts of the software will remain closed source, including binary blobs and drivers, and most of their apps, although he did say they might open some of them depending on external factors (I assume he means pressure from the community)

But still: not quite open source so now I'm not so convinced any more that I'd buy a phone from them...

Wasn't that clear from the start? At least it is what I had always expected and I've never heard anything else since day 1.

I can live with proprietary drivers. They are a PITA and always have been, but then: It's the world we live in. Most Android phones are no different. I doubt they choose proprietary firmware drivers just because they want to be evil. I assume they have a choice to make: Get attractive hardware out or be 100% free.

Proprietary things on the very top (like stock applications) are OK for me as long as the functionality they offer isn't bound exclusively to them via some obscure "security" mechanism. In other words: I really don't care if the phone application is open or closed. But I'd expect the system to allow developers to write a free and open alternative with the same functionality.

Says the man, who has a huge track-record of constantly derailing & adding noise to this thread, to the point that it was eventually moved to off-topic.

I think you'll find that there's far more significant (& multiple) ingredients required for success than whether it's closed or open.

They've always said they'll differentiate from other Sailfish vendors with their own closed/proprietary topmost layer (i.e. all/some stock/integrated apps).
Then there's this (amongst other things) that was tweeted by devs attending the conference the other day:

ubuntumobile ui looks really crap same uglyness as the desktop ubuntu does.

I go for kde or sailfishos.

But I think Jolla die soon, and what a shame if I am right :(
They have to deliver NOW and start marketing for f... sake!!

People already knows about ubuntumobile and firefoxmobile, and its already hype, only maemo people knows bout jolla :(

You're def. right that Ubuntu (rightly or wrongly) seems to have markedly more mind-share already, despite (probably) being a few steps behind.
I guess their desktop & enterprise history/name has (somewhat) helped with that...
