-overall call quality I have tested and compared two Nokia 808's and experience clearer call quality with the Jolla. (less background noises)

To conclude, at some point I will use Sailfish as daily phone , probably when the camera quality improves and call recording app emerges.

I still feel like I would pay 100 Euro-American dollars for a license to run this Sailfish OS on a Note 2 with full hardware support.
It is the software that matters.

There is a fix in the next update but it caused a real headache for me yesterday when i was out of the office and had no contact numbers to call people. There is a temp fix on that thread too.

This is pretty remarkable. I had no idea it would be possible to stretch the battery life that far, when the device has network enabled.
(I wonder how long would it last in Airplane Mode...?)

My (now retired) N9 lasts about 10 days, when I no longer have a simcard in it, it sits in my house connected to WLAN and I occasionally log into it via SSH to test something.

With so much travelling - how you use offline maps in Jolla? I haven't found a way to reliably cache the town I will visit for offline use. I try to scroll around id, hoping maps application will be smart enough to cache surrounding area, but alas - maps always ask me for connection. And in the end I have to pull out my N9 with great and reliable offline maps....

Dear Zlatko,

Sorry but I always use the navy of my car.
When I said it was reliable, I was more focused on calls, data connection, battery and coverage.
Why don't you ask in another post your question?

@48GX
Battery life is definitely top notch amongst the current smart phones. But my experienced so far had been plagued by connection issues and random reboots&shutdowns.
About the offline maps - I still have not found an answer.

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

For offline navigation I used Android app "Navigator". I tested it once with previous Sailfish OS version and after enabling GPS on Jolla and rebooted the phone, it worked just fine. Only issue I found was that the map was not always pointing to the driving direction.

I can't see myself not touch the Jolla for the time flight mode battery life will last ;)

Yesterday I just forgot Microsoft Skype for Android - which I still have to use to keep in touch with a few business contacts- yet it only took 20% of battery during a whole working day including a little car traveling (20km), no other significant operation.

Other systems including Symbian would punish me with a quickly drain battery.

I can say that the Android subsystem despite snooping away significant memory resources behaves nicely with regard to battery - at launch I kind of expected the opposite.

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

agreed with the battery observation. coming from the n900 with skype and yappari enabled, the jolla experience has been stellar. i now leave skype, whatsapp, lync 2013, all running in the dalvik VM full day. my battery lasts through the day for me (which is sufficient for my needs as i can get to a charger at home when i'm back).

Not on my Jolla it doesn't. Since the 1.0.3.8 update, if aliendalvik.service is running my battery drains at over 10% per hour (as opposed to 1-2% I was previously experiencing). I'm hoping the upcoming 'major update' will fix this.

Jolla browser seems to have lost all my bookmarks today. Tuesday it lost all my contact information. Done two factory resets as well this week. And then all the usual connection problems.

1.0.3.8 has been really dissaponting. I gonna dig my previous phone up from storage. Return to using Jolla as my primary phone after the promised 'commercial' version arrives.

Jordi 2014-02-27 21:43

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

@ Rauha, you are right, the actual situation is quite difficult.

Without the message of Chris Adams in together.joll.com which give the solution for the lost of contacts, I would have tried to revert to the previous FW (1.0.2.5), if possible.

Actually, I prefer stability than a bunch of new features, I hope the next release will bring this.

I have the opposite experience. 1.0.3.8 has been pretty stable for me compared to previous releases. I was getting connection error hangs every day.

All those odd problems seems to go away, when i got a bootloop and i have to use the option 5 in recovery.. Now its not have any random boot and it is very solid! :O

So, power it up with vol down + power, connect usb to the pc and (i use linux) in terminal:
Code:

telnet 10.42.66.66
Hope your phone fixed by this easy way too and you not loose any data, when you do this!

Ou and i have non 2tab wakeup problems anymore! :O

1.0.3.8 has been otherwise fine for me, but I have repeatedly hit to this problem: https://together.jolla.com/question/...sh-at-startup/

So far reboot has helped, though phone has took abnormally long time to first shutdown.

No, I mean just the screen being black. It's super annoying as it happens so much easier than pressing power button. Combined with the fact that if screen "time outs" while in app, it opens back to the app... dem pocketspams with mitäkuuluu

E: seems like a bug. it does not happen if you close the screen while in lockscreen, but if youre in app, appdrawer or events, it will open with volume button.

If i remeber it correctly it is intended behaviour since last update. And I like this feature because you are able to see how loud your actual volume is.

juiceme 2014-02-28 12:48

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

I realise have changed my usage-patterns somewhat from N9 days;
I do not use the power button anymore, ever. (Well, yeah, for cycling the power on the device, obviously, but how often you need to do that?? for example my uptime is 9 days now...)

I always lock the device by swipe from the ceiling, and always open it up with doubletap. On N9 I lived with constant fear of my PWR button giving up the ghost, as had happened to many people so this is really a welkome relief :D

szymeczek34 2014-02-28 13:03

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

9 days? That's impressive. I have to reboot my Jolla on a daily basis, mainly because of Messages app, which hangs in a state of no usability.
But, yeah, I don't use power button at all, too. I don't even use to reboot, there's an app that does it perfectly.

Thats so stupid... why not a locked screen with only the volume level? now this is horrible and putting the phone in my pocket after leaving it on a table with mitäkuuluu convo, will likely end up with spamming ramdom **** -.-
its literally stupidest thing ever to have a function where pressing a button goes straight to app bypassing lockscreen completely.

zlatko 2014-02-28 13:53

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

@szymeczek34, @juiceme
Unfortunately in current state of Jolla I can not do without the power button:
- while locking by swiping down from top is great(and natural in a gesture based UI), it has at least 2 shortcomings:
a) when holding the device with one hand it is quite hard to reach the top and perform the lock gesture
and
b) when you are using an application(e.g. Twitter) swiping from top will close it, so you have to swipe from the side, then swipe from top lock screen. Instead you can do just a simple key press.
- I envy the stability you have with your Jolla: since 1.0.3.8 I barely get 2 days of uptime, due to random reboots&shutdowns(and no - I do not use Android apps, I even do not have Alien Dalvik installed).

So I can't see power button going out of use for me anytime soon. Actually in 2 months I have rebooted my Jolla more than my N9 in 2 years. Hope that upcoming 1.0.4.x will change this.

late88 2014-02-28 16:03

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

Latest update gave a huge stability improvement to my phone. My uptime right now is +20days and had no problems whatsoever. I use android apps occasionally and my daily usage is somewhat normal. Now as I'm thinking of it, stability improved soon after I disabled wlan and started using 3g only.

juiceme 2014-02-28 21:54

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

@zlatko, You have either broken SW or broken HW on your device, as your stability experience is so different from mine or @late88's.

Have you tried to restore the device to factory settings and then re-upgrading it to 1.0.3.8 ?
Unfortunately AFAIK you have to go from one upgrade to next in steps, there is currently no way of directly upgrading your device from the fatory-clean state to the latest SW level.

zlatko 2014-02-28 23:18

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

@juiceme
Reason might be not clear, but random shutdowns and reboots are definitely a common issue with Jolla. You can see many users affected here: https://together.jolla.com/question/...ly-shuts-down/
And Jolla team is aware that this is plaguing the device, some fixes pushed already in coming release.
All started for me after 1.0.3.8, until then it was pretty much fine. Lets wait and see what comes next :) For me resetting is the final option, you better try to find the culprit because if you had it once, most probably it will appear again.

Protip!

Dont take your phone with you to the bars.

Otherwise you might end up with a bent phone and a stuck powerbutton.

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

Update to my experiences;

Now I had the first time my Jolla went to reboot-loop :o
So I do believe it is possible. I guess I was just lucky before as I never experienced this before.

Now I guess I have to go the system-restore way... If only I could get my SMS'es saved before I clean the device. (just about the only thing there I have not got a current backup on, bummer... Also I might have some recent contacts there that are unsaved...) I'll have to look into that.

Try taking out the battery first. It usually helps(in my case) and keeps the device from issues for several(2-3) days. :)
Even starting to pry open the TOH ends the reboot loop usually.

Taking off battery, and booting without TOH were the first things I tried, but no help there.
The fix was to boot to rescue console and select the option 5, "btrfs loop recovery"

Now it's running just like nothing ever happened :D

Another problem has risen: what to wear?

Starting from the left: Instamat covers for Jolla, Jollas, various TOHs and Kimmoli designed pcbs.

Jollas starting from the top: Possible N900 replacer (at the moment alternative private phone), current business phone (replaces my N9 starting from today) and last but not least, hobby phone, reserved for tinkering.

Picture taken with N900. It can do better, but I was in a bit of a hurry.

Any idea what you may have done that triggered the reboot-loop on your device?

juiceme 2014-03-03 21:02

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

Not really, no. I did not think I did anyhting special to cause it.

I had just the browser and email open, I was reading TMO on the browser when something happened and the device froze first, then booted.

When it started booting up, it went to fast-cycle reboot loop, the "Jolla" text came in for maybe 2...3 seconds, then it went dark for 2...3 seconds and so on. No reaction to power button, and when I removed the battery it went straight on to same cycling after I inserted it.

To cure it, I connected it to my PC, pressed vol-down and inserted battery. When it detected the USB connection it created the IP address 10.42.66.80 on the linux box. I tried telnetting to 10.42.66.66 as adviced, but it as not reachable.
After that I manually gave the linux end the IP address 192.168.2.14 and managed to telnet to the device at 192.168.2.15.

After giving my security code as password, I got the menu and used the option 5 to break the looping.

Hi. My friend in Switzerland has contacted me and said my Jolla Phone with extra keira black OH has arrived! I should have it in a few weeks! I currently have several android apps I bought from the google play store. Can I just copy the app to my jolla phone and install? What problems are folks experiencing with running android apps on Jolla phone. Is it hit or miss? Is there a list of android apps that appear to be working. On my android phones some apps are compatible with ice cream sandwich but do not work on jelly bean. Could this be an issue with Jolla. Sorry if this is all posted elsewhere. Just thought I'd check here. Thanks!

Installing directly from APK works fine, but installing paid apps straight from play crashes the store. Most apps work on any newer android version (not sure what alien dalvik is emulating) and are only restricted in play.

Ozymandias 2014-03-05 07:40

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

The paid apps can be found in a temp directory after play store crash, can be renamed to .apk and installed, so no problem there. Well, except for the inconvenience of finding and renaming them, but it could be worse ;)

droll 2014-03-05 08:22

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

alien dalvik runs 4.1.2 if i remember.

paid apps from google play store mostly won't work. they have dependencies on the google play apps and services that need to be installed in the dalvik VM. if you install those then it might work.
