Knips does poll a specific file under /sys to detect the camera orientation (for historical reasons). Other applications might use gstreamer ways to detect camera orientation - and seem to fail under certain conditions.

If people have improvement requests for Knips please mail me. I'll see what I can do. Knips was in the past rather slow and unstable. But recent versions should have improved in performance (from the subjective perspective of the author ;-)). If you still have problems, please contact me, too.

Knips is a nice program, even if I can't get it to work at all :rolleyes:. The only use I have for the camera ATM is mNotes. I once asked for a database-like program that would let me annotate pictures and mNotes is the closest thing to that I've come across.

I bought an used N800, updated with Diablo. With knips the image is correctly flipped when I turn the camera. With Camera and Cameravideo the flipping doesnt work, I get upside-down images.

My N800 began having the same problem recently. I uninstalled the camera and when i went to reinstall it , it was nowhere to found. It's not in applications anymore:confused: Anyway i just did the shutdown/remove battery for 10minutes/reboot fix and low and behold it works! Strange little bugger. I believe Sting said it best, something about " a ghost in the machine".

Den, you are a god. thanx for this very useful post! I'm only interested in the native camera app, so it doesn't matter to me if it's upside down when facing towards me. You could just turn the device 90" to vertical if you'd like a self portrait. I really wanted to use the camera again after the upgrade to Diablo (on my N800), and your post saved that for me. Thanx again! --by the way, the regular camera app IS in the repositories. And the name of the configuration editor is called gconf-editor.

So has this bug been verified as a hardware problem or anyone else find a better solution?
When ever I reflash my N800 with the update wizard the camera will work properly for a few days until the battery level drops then a wierd crash/reset happens then the bad camera behavior returns
