@cb474: I think you should consider taking your own advice (less judgmental, let other people voice their own opinions, etc)... and don't take everything you read, personally.

Not all of them were directed toward you, so when you took it upon yourself to 'stand in their line of fire' and launched your counterattacks, it's only natural that you created conflicts with unrelated and disinterested parties.

Um, so you're justifying your snide and mocking posts, by arguing that the person who points them out is being judgmental? I suppose, technically, in my judgment I find that some of your posts here and elsewhere are snide and mocking and I find that they bring the tone of the forum down.

It seems to me that you refuse to take any responsibility for what you said and so you're just criticizing me or looking for a way to evade the issue by saying you meant to be snide to somebody else.

As far as creating conflicts with unrelated and disinterested parties goes. It seems to me that you stepped into a thread with an ongoing debate about the phone application on the N900 and now you act surprised that someone thought you were commenting on the actual thread that you were posting in. By your own admission you didn't even read the posts in the thread you were responding to. I think that is probably the source of the unintended conflict with disinterested parties.

I also really don't see how it's relevant that your comments weren't directed at me. I already explained above why it wasn't so easy to tell that. But accepting your assertion that they weren't directed at me, does that still justify being snide and mocking and condescending to others? Again part of my point, which you ignore by not responding to the substance of my last couple posts, was that snide and mocking posts bring down the tone of the whole forum, as much as fanboy type posts. That effects everyone, not just the intended target.

Lastly, I really don't see how I'm keeping anyone from having their own opinion. I'm just saying what I think about a certain type of snide post. Others are free to (and have) responded, including yourself. In fact, it seems to me that it's exactly the point of your snide posts, both in this thread and that I've seen in other threads, to belittle people and thereby silence them.

@cb474: If you have a problem with me then let's take it outside, or do it in private messages. Or if I'm breaking any forum rules, then please point them out and I will report them to the moderators myself and/or edit/delete them to comply with the forum.

As to what I've posted on this thread: I replied to the OP and replied to Gerbick's post, which interested me. I didn't read your posts because after reading a few sentences of it I surmised that you were more interested in having people listen to what you have to say and to defend your own pov, so I didn't read most of your lengthy posts in their entirety.

This will be my last OOT post to this thread.

I don't have a problem with you. I just have a problem with some of your posts, which were snide, mocking, and condescending. I'm sure many of your posts here are perfectly constructive and substantive. But in this thread and recently elsewhere that's not what I've seen. Also, it's not specifically your posts, but snide and mocking posts in general, which I guess I just finally got fed up with in the context of this thread. You ought to be able to appreciate that, since part of the whole point of your snide comments was to express your own frustration with similar fanboy type posts.

And there really lies the irony. You felt completely free to comment on those fanboy posts whose tone and nature you object to. In fact, you felt free to pop in and comment on them in a thread where you later said you weren't even claiming anyone was being a fanboy, it was just part of a dicussion with another member that originated in another thread (speaking of off-topic remarks that could be relegated to private messages). And all the while that you were being snide about fanboys, you had no concern about whether or not the problems with the fanboy posts you dislike rose to the level of violating forum rules. You just launched in and felt completely free to call people "fanatics," make judgements about their "character," and explain who are the "wrong people."

But now that I object to the tone and nature of some of your posts, the standard suddenly rises to whether or not they violate the forum rules and should they really be "taken outside." It just seems like when you don't like a post, you jump in and make a snide comment whose purpose seems to be to silence the person or otherwise put them in their place. But when I don't like some of your posts, some higher standard has to have been violated. Snideness vanishes and it all becomes about lofty concerns over letting people voice their opinions and my being judgmental and my just wanting people to listen to me. Well why not say just let the fanboys speak? Why not say you're being judgmental about the fanboys? Why not say you just want people to approve of your clever snide remarks?

You can't have it both ways. The double standard on your part (voiced above and in your last post) is clear. And all the while you have managed to avoid the topic of the snideness itself, it's effect on the tone of the forum (and similarity to fanboy posts in that regard), and whether it's really the best way to address people here, forum rules or not.

Re: Should I wait?

Can somebody please help me (the originator of this thread) with the URLs of suggested reviews.
I've done searches but I get recommendations to threads with many posts rather than individual posts.
Thanks very much
Darryl

Re: Should I wait?

I'd be glad to help, if I can, but I'm not sure I understand, which urls? which reviews?

The urls for the reviews I suggested, earlier in this thread, appear in this post:http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...1&postcount=13. But I'm assuming you saw that.

Yes I did and I thank you.

I just wondered if there were others I should read?

Re: Should I wait?

Those are the most substantive, thorough reviews I've come across (except the relatively short Gigaom post). I've been keeping an eye out as best I can, for a while.

There's a nice photo gallery, but not much other info, here:http://www.allaboutmaemo.com/gallery...Nokia_N900.php I'm sure All About Maemo will have a good several part review, once the device comes out.

And here's some other less substantive reviews/previews that I've seen (in no particular order). If you've been searching around you probably have seen a lot of them already:

http://thenokiablog.com/2009/08/19/n...mobile-review/
http://thenokiablog.com/2009/10/19/n...-review-email/

http://www.eweekeurope.co.uk/product...p-option--2368

This is actually pretty extensive:

And if you just search on YouTube there are a few good videos there.

Re: Should I wait?

Well after lots of reading and viewing (and ignoring the animosity between some members) I succumbed to what appears to me to be an exceptional product and ordered one!

As the N900 is not scheduled for release in Australia for quite some time and as Australian English is closest to UK English, I decided to pay a little more and order from Expansys UK.

Additionally, because the product will not be available here, I felt that in the event of a problem, it'll be easier to get service from Nokia UK.

Thanks to all those very kind forum members who advised me and also pointed out the omissions and gaps in my knowledge.

Darryl ;)
