This reminded me of a few futuristic movies i've seen (Alien) where the world is run by corporations and not governments, its probably like that already, just not so public :)

@oweng: I wouldn't have started this thread if I didn't believe a M$ buyout was a real possibility. Now I think it's more likely than not.

@Daneel: That happened a long time ago, at least in the US.

Just curious if you think the Google/Motorola deal will put pressure on Microsoft to actually buy Nokia instead of just controlling it.

Does anyone really, I mean honestly, give a ****?

Other than the impact to employees and their families, no I don't - except that all these mergers, acquisitions, partnerships and patent wars will ultimately determine what devices I will have to choose from and what operating systems they run. I DO care about that!

Nokia was already getting primed to be sold. Elop has already sold or in the process of selling software assets in the form of Symbian and QT. This makes Nokia very attractive as a pure hardware manufacturer to be sold for its patent portfolio.

Good point. I saw this happen at Texas Instruments not long before our division was sold to Raytheon.

EDIT: oh, and here's a logo that got a laugh from me last year--

So you see the signs :) Does this also include news from Microsoft that they have no plans of purchasing Nokia? No? Thought so.

Oh yea, they are going to publicly announce that they have plans to buy Nokia thus inflating the price of the stocks tenfold.

The US government should hire you to fix their debt, you seem really clever.

Actually both have issued denials, but I know from direct personal experience that those sorts of denials mean nothing.

Not sure there is anybody else out there that both could and would.

Google paid +60% over market cap for Motorola. That would make Nokia, even with post Elopcalypse share prices, very expensive purchase. 30 billion or more in Dollars. Very few corporations could afford that price. Most that could do not have any need for Nokia.

Question 1

Who:
  • at one point recently had greater cash reserves than the US federal government?
  • is fighting mobile tech patent lawsuits currently?
  • has had to settle patent lawsuits with Nokia before?
  • is a direct competitor of Microsoft and will be seeking to keep all MSFT mobile efforts down?

Answers on an ultra-thin, shiny and wickedly overpriced postcard please.
