Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Cool.
OK I feel better, compiled 2020 this morning zoom and fullscreen didn't work. Thought I screwed something up again. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
R2022 fixes the buttons for OSD etc.

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
gerrit, cool... I'll update tomorrow morning.
I updated my layout on my blog and on the wiki to yet another style of layout. this time based on having my 810 to the right of the steering wheel so putting most info to far right of screen. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
navit keeps to want me jumping on elevated roads without using ramps, or worse where there is no ramp at all. it's the same to go down the elevated road . this could be a relative minor issue in short route if you're not drunk while driving, but i wonder what it could cause if it happens in a long route in an intersection between higways. is it a well know bug or am i missing something?
it seems to me that often navit (flite) says sinistra (left) instead of destra (right). i've checked the translation's site and translation seems good, does it happens in english too? would it make sense to put in maemo downloads one svn version from navit's site and one surely n810 optimized compiled from one of the thread's guru? i've started thinking that while driving home with svn version keeping turning off my screen and with navigation beetwen different country not working anymore. i can't find a way to route to a point by entering the coordinates of point. i would open a feature/request but before i would like to know if i'm missing something. this would be a pratical way to route beetwen two different country, having internet access at starting point (or at home before leaving). |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
ernia- I found that on the ramp I normally take to work, Navit was directing me *left* directly on the highway instead of *right* onto the ramp. Sounds similar to your problem?
In my area OpenStreetMaps have a lot of errors. In this case, the ramp isn't properly connected to the streets and the overpass is connected (wrongly) to the street under it. I can't tell if Navit has the problem since there are so many errors in the maps for my area. I haven't seen the option to route by using coordinates. To all: Is anyone else have similar problems: Next turn icons are missing, announcer toggle is missing, Northing is on by default despite the menu item showing it off. Is my install really messed up? I have uninstalled and reinstalled using downloaded debs to no avail. Any ideas? |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
lemmyslender
ramps issue is the same as me, but i do use reiseplaner maps. my home-work distance is 30 km. i really drive only one ramp. there is a point where navit calculates the route as i could take a city highway but there is no ramp. the ramp is in a road at 1 km and on map the two roads seems to be disconnected. how do you know if ramp is connected or not, by looking at the map? aren't vector maps drawn by navit? could the issue be when navit draws the map? i do have the others issues too but i think they are due to svn versions of navit breaking something. how do you remove a bookmark? |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
ernia-
I think it may be a Navit problem too. Hard for me to check with so many errors in my area. Thanks for confirming the same issues. Bookmarks: Look in /home/user/.navit one of the files there should be bookmark.txt open in any editor and edit to your hearts content. You can add (if you know the coordinates in navit format DDDD.ss N/S DDDD.ss E/W), remove, change names, order, etc. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Hi. I'm having trouble with garmin maps. With the first version of navit I was able to use them, but now with this new version I get the following error navit:map_new:invalid type 'garmin' . Is there any way to fix this so I can use garmin maps?.
Thanks in advance |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I've been trying all day long to find out how to write in bookmark.txt coordinates in the hex format i've seen for other bookmarks, without trying to put simple DD.dd coordinates in it. it do works!! that means that you can route towards any point of known coordinates, as you can route toward bookmarks. it make me feel less scared from the (at the moment) not so intuitive internal interface. thanks a lot!!
i think that from tomorrow i'll start to collect items to report bugs/feature request in navit's site. navit seems to be very promising and i try to contribute as i can. meanwhile if i need navit for real routing i will use gerritv's 2006 from his blog (or dwould's from his blog). |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
For anyone that's interested. this evening I figured out how to turn Navit's debug output into something reasonably consumable, with call stack indenting with entry exit trace that shows name of function/file:line number. It's not the most obvious thing, but if you're compiling navit your self and your interested in trying to understand what is going on under the hood a little better:

i've found out that one of my illegal routes happens only in reiseplaner maps and not in osm binary file. can you change your mapset to verify your routing issues? |

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
marce_245, Gerrit is on the case on your behalf. The SVN builds provided currently do not include the garmin map support. Gerrit has asked that it be added. I'm sure he'll post here when it has been.

Thank you dwould, I didn't know. Exciting news for me then. Looking forward to it.

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
ernia-
unfortunately I can't change my maps. The only option I have is OSM. I don't think reiseplanner maps are available for the USA. In building my own from the svn's one time I somehow got garmin support enabled, but nothing showed up with the garmin maps I have (garmin basemap and a few free others I downloaded). I don't know how I got garmin support enabled that once and haven't been able to repeat it. I have tried building (autogen, configure, make, make install ) libgarmin inside scratchbox, but that doesn't seem to help. I even tried forcing it by changing configure.in but that didn't work either. I'd love to be able to use garmin maps, but I don't know if routing is working with them. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Hi lemmyslender:
You wrote a while ago: To all: Is anyone else have similar problems: Next turn icons are missing, announcer toggle is missing, Northing is on by default despite the menu item showing it off. Is my install really messed up? I have uninstalled and reinstalled using downloaded debs to no avail. Would you happen to know the file names of the missing icons? I think I know why they are missing (and have a fix) but presently have no way of testing. Gerrit |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Re: garmin map support, tonight's SVN build <should> have the garmin stuff included. If not, please say so here and I will check into it.
Just in case, I am also building a new .deb for my blog, the screen unblank is not quite finished in SVN. That .deb will also have what I think are the missing nav icons. Check my blog on Thu AM. Gerrit |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
gerrit-
I believe that the files in question are: gui_sound... gui_sound_off... nav_left... nav_right... nav_straight.... various sizes png svg xpm. Just checked - copied and old gui_sound_off_32.xpm to navit folder and renamed to gui_sound_32.xpm and copied. Also same for gui_sound_off.svg and gui_sound_off_32_32.png copy, rename, copy. Announcer_toggle still doesn't appear to work (demo) but the icon shows up now. Gerrit- does this mean the original icons are messed up and thus not being scaled properly? Or is it something else - naming problem? I usually have a small blue box with a question mark (unknown.xpm) |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Hi Lemmyslender
I submitted trac 300 to create .png versions of more icons, in particular the nav_.... ones. For gui_sound... I would try using the .png versions. My .deb (SVN 2038+trac's 282 and 300) is now on the blog..... Gerrit |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
gerrit
It appears to be related to gui_sound_32.xpm. I renamed it to .bak and it the icon disappeared. Renamed back to .xpm and it shows back up. I'll download from your blog and let you know. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
gerrit
downloaded your latest deb, installed, no icons, uninstalled, deleted /usr/share/navit, reinstalled no icons. Downloaded dwoulds' 2001 deb, installed, had the turn icons. Re-installed your deb 2038, no icons again. Also, on battery and fullscreen, screen blanks at 2 minutes as per normsl. Is there a config setting I need? Thanks for all your hard work, enjoy your time off-line. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Mnn, the default for screen unblank is unblank on full screen, so you don't need a config setting.
Re: the icons, it is only a few that are missing right, not all of them? Problem is that I can't create routes, so those wouldn't apper for me in my testing.... Try using the .png versions of gui_sound_32 by changing navit.xml. There is something not quite right about some formats, not sure if it is Navit or if it is the N8x0 OS... in the case of .svg it is the OS and its related files. Gerritv |

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
wow, libgarmin is chatty.
Couple of suggestions: 1. Use navit.pastebin.com to provide a link to data such as this. 2. Generally speaking, maps don't display unless you either have a GPS lock (which you don't in your trace) or the center.txt file has coordinates that are within your active map. Center.txt accepts various formats. 3. Join #navit via IRC, let them know the pastebin link. There should be more help there on libgarmin issues Gerrit |

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
ernia/gerrit-
Checking in this morning: I start navit windowed, then goto fullscreen. Rechecked, on battery unblank does not appear to work. However, driving in this morning, I have it plugged in, in the car. Worked fine then, check display, stay lit set to never, so it should have blanked the screen. Conclusion unblank works when charging, not when on battery, makes some sense to me. Still works launching from personal launcher w/ specific navit.xml, works from normal menu as well. I still have the red power button exit icon in my menu. I will see if I can't find where to specify using png icons instead of svg in navit.xml I have the garmin basemap and a usaeast.img garmin map. Both appear to load, but neither show up. At least I don't get any warnings about the garmin maps. Some info appears but seems to confirm loading. I did go into gtk version and use garmin projection instead of map&guide. Tried enabling/disabling/reenabling no effect. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Lemmyslender, I think it's not so much a case of charging or not, when I played it seemed more like it triggers only when you have a gps signal. eg it's done based of gps events. if you lost signal then no more unblanking. This kind of makes sense, not much point keeping the screen on if you don't even have a gps signal.

about unblanking dwould seems to be (as usual :) ) right. while i confirm that if you start navit fullscreen unblanking fix will not work until you resize from the gui, it is true that unblanking fix doesn't work without a gps signal, i've just tested it while indoor. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Fair enough, didn't think about that. Makes sense as well.

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
MMn, I think tha tI mentioned originally for the screen unblank that it was gui/internal only? If not, abject apologies. Once cp15 has done a generic solution, we can add screen unblank for the other UI's. Also fix the issue with starting in fullscreen. I now know of a better and less cpu time consuming way to do the unblank but haven't coded it up yet. I will try to get that to a trac before I go.
I'm not quite gone yet, leaving Mar 7, return May 22. But there are a lot of logitstics and playing/working on Navit for multi hours per day no longer fits :-) Shipboard internet is $$ so not going to get to some of my hobbies for a while. This morning I too couldn't launch Navit from App Mgr, ok from xterm. BTW, best command line for that is "run-standalone.sh navit -c ~user/.navit/navit.xml 2> out&' This captures all chatty output to a file called out. As for libgarmin, I strongly suggest asking on #navit. Someone there will help. Gerrit |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
After install the deb package from Gerrit's blog and start Navi from shell, it prompts the incompatibility issue with D-bus. It says navi needs -rdynamic for dbus lib? Anyone got the same issue?

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
mmn, never seen that message yet.
I do know why it won't load from app launcher, I will upload a fixed version shortly (it is due to my call tracing code, nothing intended for SVN) Which OS are you running? |

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
hi noZLine
There is a new tested .deb on my blog with the fixes. (But my ISP is doing maintenance until at least 0100 EST) Your symptom is due to a missing .service file in /usr/share/dbus-1/services (due to me resetting a Makefile). This also prevents screen unblank from working. The 'it won't launch from app launcher' was due to some new call tracing code trying to create a trace.txt file, eventhough call tracing was disabled. Hi Ernia, no idea how it could work for Lemmyslender unless he was doing something funky with the install. Gerrit |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
gerrit
it seems to me that the new deb is broken, dpkg refuses to install it and xarchiver on my pc can't open data.tar.gz inside it, while it can do that in your svn-2006 .deb. i downloaded it three times, can you check it, please? thanks a lot |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I don't think I was doing anything funky with the install. Just downloading the deb and installing.
I have gone back and forth several times with several different versions. I normally use personal launcher to start navit, but it did launch from the normal menu in extras albeit with the generic navit.xml. I keep my normal navit.xml in the same directory as my maps and other settings on my sd card. I did find the section of navit.xml that calls out the nav and announcer icons, changed to png from svg extentsions. Still did not show up when navigating. I did notice in the 2001 svn most icons were along the lines of nav_left_1.xpm, and the recent svn icons are nav_left_1_bk or nav_left_1_wh (black and white arrows). Oddly, my far older navit.xml layout section correctly calls out the new icons w/ bk designations. They still don't show up though. I did confirm that while on battery screen unblank works when there is a gps signal. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
hi ernia
I reloaded the SVN2042 .deb file this morning. My ISP was doing maintenace during the time I was uploading it last night so I not surprised the file was messed up. It is definitely fine now. Hi Lemmyslender, I can't create routes using town etc because the N800 doesn't have a locale for Canada. Can you describe how you create a route using POI's? Then I can try debugging the icon issue. BTW, starting Navit from personal launcher islike doing it from Xterm, do you prefix the command with run-standalone.sh? I think that sets up the env same as if starting from App Launcher. Gerrit |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
thanks gerrit, this time it do works.
if you need to navigate between points (wich works without a gps signal too) you can add every point you need in bookmark.txt in /home/user/.navit/ directory. you can do it echoing (or editing) a new row like that: mg:11.53060 44.5315142 type=bookmark label="sazzini" where 11xxx and 44xxx are respectively longitude and latitude, both in DD.dddd coordinates. (maybe it could works in center.txt too, i haven't tested). you can get coordinates from some online service like google map or similar. then from action menu (forgive me if names aren't exactly the same, my menus are in italian) tap bookmarks, tap the name of start point bookmark you have created and then tap set as position, after that come back again actions>bookmarks>destination_bookmarks_name and then tap set as destination, wait a little and route will be created. if you can't see route on the map change zoom level to make navit redraw the map. |
