Hold down "+" and insert charger (i think), - i don't have a Q7 so.

No about the wireless driver. You'd want to save yourself some time and wait until I've made testing5 images tomorrow - they got delayed today. It will have USB networking fixed for starters..

Re: Moses SmartQ 5

Okay, I'll wait until tomorrow.

And I'll double-check on the flash method. Rename to SmartQ7 is correct, though?

Any idea if the wireless chip for the Q7 is the same as Q5 -- same Marvell drivers?

Thanks,

m a r

Yes to rename - kekegg's wifi didn't work yet though. It -should- be same marvell firmware.

Mer on the SmartQ 7

On Saturday, I downloaded the testing2 image to a partitioned SD card. I placed it into the slot in the Q7 and it showed up as something like "disk-1" and "disk" on the desktop.

When I held down the + key and inserted the charger, the system slowed down but didn't boot up Mer. [Of course, the Q7 being slow at tasks is a common occurrence.:)]

Would those with a Q7 running Mer be willing to give very explicit steps as to how to get Mer running once testing5 is available?

For example, what state (on/off/reset/?) does the Q7 need to be in when holding down the + key and inserting the charger?

What kind of partitions should be on the SD card (FAT32/Other)?

Which partition should hold the image?

Should the partition have a particular name?

Basically, the instructions should assume the user (like me) knows nothing about getting Mer to run on the Q7.;)

Thanks in advance.

Same wireless drivers - on the name - you should name it SmartQ7.

To start flashing - hold down "select (under +-) and plug in charger (now you should have a yellow light not a orange dot) soon you will have information in chinese and when it starts you have the status bar...

good luck

SDcard should be fat32 and just put the firmware "SmartQ7" on the card("in root"=not in a mapp). i dont think it matter on with partition but put in the first or both;)

(Device off) hold down "select(menu key)" on the front of the device under the "+-" keys and insert the charger (or press "power on" key)

Re: Moses SmartQ 5

There must be a slight misunderstanding here. To upgrade the SmartQ you need to have the button pressed while turning the device on. Turning it on either by pressing the power button or plugging in the charger while it is off. Plugging the charger while it is on will have no effect (except for starting to charge, of course).

Here's a photo of Mer 0.13 on the SmartQ 7.

My misunderstanding of how to load Mer on Saturday was based on the instruction to "hold down the + key".

To me, this meant the top button on the upper left, which has a + sign in its picture.

The correct button is the 3rd down on the left.

Thanks for helping, Bezeen & Matan!

Everything works fine on the SmartQ 7, I mean all the applications are working correctly?

What I am really asking: is it worth installing on my SmartQ 7?

I don't speak for the Mer developers but here's my take.

Only a few applications are working under Mer on the Q7.

Most apps have a direct use in helping test features of the OS.

If applications are your main interest and not exploring Mer itself, I would wait for a later release.

Ah, well, Mer without any applications is pretty useless, isn't it? The only thing I am really interested in right now is to be able to brows the web and have a nice clean look on the device with some desktop apps/add-ons.

As a full production environment? Sure.

As an initial development effort, it's not useless at all. And no one has really said it's anything but that, right now.

Is that a limitation on the Moses SmartQ? Because on the N810, fbreader installs from the ubuntu arm repositories built into mer just fine.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install fbreader
fbreader

It is not the latest version of fbreader so it sucks on my epubs, but my non-drm mobipocket files work just fine and because you can remap the keys internally to fbreader (including fullscreen) it effectively seems to work similar to what is in maemo.

Well, it always break for me when I pull the plug when it's on, it freezes up. If it does you need to push the reset button. Well, though, it is not broke if I start it again, is it with Mer?

You have midori and all GPE...

You can install fbreader with command line

Code:

apt-get install fbreader
It installs from ubuntu repositories, so it is not available in application manager. It might be necessary to configure by hand full screen/rotate/next page/prev page, but you get the same functionality as hildonized fbreader. Similar situation is for evince.

For mplayer, it might be best to apt-get install mplayer, but then copy mplayer binary and two modules s3c_mfc.ko and s3c_pp.ko from original image. This version uses hardware video acceleration so it can play higher quality videos.

I tried to install mer on my q7 using the instructions here and the file downloaded from

http://www.daimi.au.dk/~cvm/mer-0.14testing2.SmartQ7

I got as far as getting the chinese writing appearing on the q7 display, that stayed there for about an 90 minutes so i assumed it failed...

After power off and back on again the device no longer starts up...the light flashes red for a couple of seconds and then stops.

No boot of the device or of the sd card.

Anyone any ideas how i can recover from this ?

Thanks

Okay, for good measure, the images we put out for Q7 are strictly experimental and I would not recommend them to anyone. I hope we will improve the quality of them over this week.

One thing worth noting:

* Your devices can be booted using a specially crafted SD card - there's a guide to the SDUpdateTool or something in this thread i think.

thanks for the pointer...and i do totally understand the images are experimental.

I found a few references to the SDUPdateTool on this site but nothing that leads anywhere....might you have any further info on this and what i need to do with it ?

I am downloading the original q7 firmware in the hope that this might help somehow, though the device just doesnt seem to be booting at all so i am not confident it will get my anywhere on its own....

http://www.jiongtang.com/blog/html/s...d-smartq7.html should be the URL to create a bootable SD using a card reader / or another device with SD exported over USB.

Be aware that a SDHC card may not work (we had odd problems), so you may need a SD card.

thanks for the link.

For some reason the tool keeps throwing an error message "Cannot write Image File to SD Card"....

I have tried two standard SD cards ( 1GB & a 2GB card) and same error on both.

Both have been formated to fat32.

Your help is very much appreciated!

I am having a similar problem. Except I flashed Mer ok but now it seems I'm stuck with it.

When I try to go back to the original firmware it hangs with the chinese writing. But when I give it up and reboot I still have Mer.

Tried the sd update tool with no joy.

If you used the Starq7 0.13 mer firmware - you should try to install with the firmware named to SmartQ5 (have both "SmartQ5 and SmartQ7" on)

If the chinese writings ends with a

you should reset and try again (rename firmware?) the chinese should end with
...

Red light - hold down menu/select and push reset button (with the charger plug in)

Reason why you people are having trouble with SmartQ5/7: I use the Q5 initramfs in Q7 image, which obviously looks for SmartQ5.

I'm following in your footsteps.:D

Bezeen's post above helped me reinstall the Chinese firmware but I'm still working on the language issue.

I did not have success trying to follow the procedures here: http://www.jiongtang.com/fourm/viewt...&t=630&start=0

Eletroworld provides the link for its English language pack here: http://www.eletroworld.cn/nb/download/language-en.rar.

I have the unpacked the Eletroworld RAR file (language-pack-en-base.deb and language-pack-en.deb) to the SmartQ 7 Chinese desktop but I'm gun shy about going further.

I do have a request in to e World for help but Alex has not uploaded his guide because of problems with his netbook.

Were you able to reinstall the English language pack?

If so, would you mind posting your steps?

If anyone else knows, please reply, too.

Thanks.

before picture 3 you have a hidden text - but just go to /etc/default open as root (pic 1) edit locale as in pic 3 -> zh_CN to en_US - save, reboot

I'm in /etc/default and tried to open /etc/default/locale as root and I get an error message--"Failed to run pcmanfm --no-desktop '/etc/default' as user root." Then, text in Chinese with the English word Xauthorization and a Cancel button.

It would help if I knew Linux, but I'm not sure where to go from here.

If I just tap once on the file, locale, it opens in Leafpad and I get what is shown in Pic 3 on the above site.

Do I edit it and save as:

LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
LANGUAGE="zh_CN:zh:en_US:en"

Let me know and thanks for your help.

It looks like the above syntax is correct but my problem is that the Chinese firmware has locked me out from using Root.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

As I don't know Ubuntu/Linux, my guess is that I need to find out what the Root password is and assign myself the needed privileges to make the above change to Locale.

celtica96 2009-06-10 22:29

Re: Moses SmartQ 5

Success (but I'm not sure I could duplicate it).

I went here to read up on Ubuntu and sudoroot: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ro...root%20account.

I ran the following command from the Chinese Run prompt:
"sudo passwd root" with the password being something easy to remember.

I also issued a "sulogin passwd root" command from the Run dialog box.

Then, I restarted the Q7 and tried opening the Locale file again as Root.

This time it worked! I made my edits, saved the file, closed all open windows, and pressed the reset button.

The Q7 came back in English. Also, I have checked the file again and I am still able to open it "...in super user mode."

I hope this works for others in the same boat but your mileage may vary.:D

Re: Moses SmartQ 5

Somebody care to make me clear on this?

I keep getting the Chinese message + ! (ie: some sort of failure.)

What I've done:

1) On a 1GB SD card (FAT 32), I've placed the mer-0.14testing2.SmartQ7 image.

2) Renamed the image to SmartQ7.

3) Placed into device. While device is off, hold down Menu/Function button and plug in charger. Device shows orange LED (for firmware flash mode, I assume.)

4) I get the "!" message.

5) Remove SD card, rename image to SmartQ5 on my laptop.

6) Repeat (3) above.

7) I get the "!" message.

I'm currently downloading the v2.0 Chinese firmware. I'll try it with that, but the download will take about 4 hours...

I'm doing this from a Xubuntu Linux machine -- could the FAT formatting on the SD card be wrong somehow? I suppose I could have a wonky SD reader in the device...

Do I need to use the SDUpdateTool on the image first?

Thanks for any pointers,

m a r

ps: just trying to get this thing up again -- borked my xorg.conf and it won't boot... any OS will do at this point...
