I then asked why my order details screen on their website said ship qty: 0 and backordered: 0. She repeated robotically that the only information they have is that pre-orders will be shipped by 19th Nov.

Well thats my contribution. I'm seriously holding back at having a rant at call-centre operators but what are you gonna do?

Nokia said they are shipping the units from the factory in Korea to distributors. The distributors will send it to the people who ordered from them when they get a batch of units(nov 19 in your case). It's not like there's someone at the end of the product line in the factory scribbling people's home addresses to the packages as they come and then dropping them in a mailbox. Patience, you will get yours. :)

And I agree. From a customer perspective it is indeed a tad annoying to have to wait several weeks for a product just because other customers have problems with it. However, according to Mobil's quote, Klas Ström said they would probably delay the delivery, so it is not definite. I can understand they do not want to deliver to Three customers and I see it is a problem since they can't in all cases know which customers have which operator..

One thing about operators is that phones do not need to have it in their product lines until its fully approved by them. Tre(3) can opt out to from not having it as part of their product line. Why should other operators/customers have to suffer the delay when it has been approved for use on their network. Personally, a bad call on Nokia Sweden side. Lets hope the "probable" delay is only just that! "probable".
By the way did anybody attend that chat with Nokia Sweden on the Mobil.se site and what was the outcome of that chat session? Was there a question about why the delay to Sweden, everything mentioned about the shipping to Sweden seems to be here-say!

And what are you base that on (that it must work on all operators, even the smallest at release)?

I think it so stupid and I've waited long enough!!!

Nokia should deliver now or never!

MPD have over 500 orders for the N900 and realistically speaking, they couldn't ship all of them in one day.

Therefore delivery will be staggered over 2-3 days from the 17th based on a first come first served basis. Potentially a lot more than six sleeps...

I just got an email from Newegg after i asked her on live session yesterday to confirm the stipulated 11/30/2009 shipping date. in view of Nokia's press release yesterday

Quote:

Dear Adesuyan,

Thank you for contacting Newegg.

I have received the feedback from our related department, and they have confirmed that the release date is 11/30. We will not release orders prior to that date. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please visit our FAQs page. If you still need assistance, please feel free to email me directly and I will be happy to assist you.
So I replied back asking if those of us who pre-ordered the product are also affected by this date. still waiting for reply.

I'm interested in which companies you are familiar with that are able to get tens of thousands of devices out of the door the first day the shipping starts.

I hope so, but in the following quote from the (same) article on mobil.se he goes on to state that he hopes people will understand that Nokia Sweden will wait.

Quote:

"- Man får hoppas att folk förstår att vi väntar för att det ska bli en bra upplevelse för alla."
Informing customers that the N900 doesn't work yet with 3 is enough IMO, and so far shop.nokia.se has done just that, and have ensured people that the N900 will ship without the update. I'll believe it when I have my N900(:s) in hand or when I can track the shipment.

The post on Nokia's official blog, Nokia Conversations leads us to believe that the N900 will still ship, and that the update for the 3 SIM:s will be released later.

Quote:

"When the N900 launches it’ll be compatible with most networks, although it won’t initially be available on new 3G SIM cards from 3 in the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark and Austria – a software update is in the pipeline and is slated to become available before the end of the year."
And by the looks of it, Nokia has not made the decision to hold back the deliveries of the N900 in other affected countries..

I wrote to shop.nokia.se yesterday informing them about the bug in question (5315), the statement made in the article, and that I want them to send the device to me without the 3 SIM update. I haven't received a reply yet, but I'll report back when I do.

Actually if you look at the bug list outlining the 3 operator it refers to 3UK and possibly all 3 operator per countries

Link: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5315

The strange thing is that it only refers to this operator and no mention to Swedish 3 as an issue. Its a case of Sweden Nokia being cautious! This should not affect other operators in the Swedish market. Unless, 3 operator in other countries purchase sim cards that is manufactured in Sweden which I sincerely doubt.

Personally, there seems to be no logic behind the decision! Also no explanation why the delay!

My understanding of Apple's logistics is the same as for Nokia - the factory ship to staging points then once the mass has accrued it is then shipped to distributors. The difference here is that Nokia announced when it was shipped from the factory as opposed to further down the line when shipped from Distributors.

I hope they still ship personally! I have Tre aswell as Telenor and I dont care if it doesn't work for Tre. I'll just use the other operator in the meantime. What I don't get is, why Nokia Sweden should delay if other countries have the issue too. like I say bad call. Lets hope they deliver regardless!

What apple does really well is releases. They hype properly (both by letting the community stew and by hosting events that run really well. Contrast their events with the T-Mobile/Motorola debacle). They give a date, and (for the most part) hit it. There are enough devices in ALL the Apple retail stores to motivate shittons of people (*****s?) to wait in line to buy ON THAT DAY.

I think a lot of what Apple does is bad (same with pretty much every corporation FWIW), but other companies should do their best to follow Apple's lead on how to release a product.

I think that's roughly in line with what I said?

I agree regarding the marketing and release - Apple have always been a triumph of marketing (some might say at the expense of engineering but that is another debate).

The difference though I suspect is that Apple were going for mainstream and Nokia with Maemo apparently weren't but it would have been nice to have had a more polished released regardless.

Hello All,

I work for a major electronic company, and just checked our distribution channel, Ingram Micro, Tech Data etc, all of them have ETA dates of 11-13-09 here in the states. Looks like they're arriving to distribution channels on Friday then shipping out from there to the end-users....what an exciting time!

What immediately springs to mind regarding a successful launch is Apple, and the launch of the iPhone 3G here in Sweden. No pre-orders were possible, but it was available the exact minute Telia and Apple said it would be. Telia's servers went on their knees as expected due to the demand, but I got one from the first batch.

The iPhone 3G was, with the first version of the OS, the buggiest piece of technology I've ever used (before or since). But that is a whole other thing! :)

I guess I misread your post. It seemed like you were suggesting that they waited for critical mass to accrue (whenever that happens). I'm suggesting that they set a date, and pump out as many devices as they can to retailers before and up to that date. See the logical difference that I read? Either way, we're on a similar page :)

I suspect that in the case you describe they had already been shipping devices from the factory to the shops over a period of maybe weeks already. And they didn't then announce the date when the shipping to shops started. The latter is what Nokia has done. (And then there are the pre-orders, directly with Nokia and with e.g. Amazon.)

Yes, for some reason people commonly overlook the times when Apple stumbles. For instance, Final Cut Server was announced in April of 2007 at NAB. At that time, Apple promised the software would ship "Summer 2007". It shipped at the start of April 2008.

Yes, hence my "regarding a successful launch". Apple definitely prepared by stocking up in advance leading up to the date (and time) they had set. It's the only way to make a thing like that work.

Full Ack!

I've preordered in August. It was clear that it will be October and
a delay of 1 Month is *nothing* for such a complex HW/SW-Project.
I know some Settopboxes which had a year delay when they arrived.
Anyone who developed software does know how hard/impossible
it is to make exact project plans.
