Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
Thanks for the replies.
Qole: Did you edit the /etc/asound.conf to make the sound working? I downloaded your image and the .conf file isn't the same as the one given to me in the link. Anyone have the libgcc3_uno.so file so we can replace it? |

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
MisterSorin: You have somehow managed to install the Diablo version of Easy Debian (for the N810). The Fremantle (N900) version does not use any of the device mapper binaries, because they aren't needed in Maemo 5.
EDIT: It sounds like your image file is not the problem here. You don't need to download it again! |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
@rm42, what do I have to do with that file ?
@qole I don't know why my device installed the diablo version of easy debian, I downloaded it for maemo 5 debian-m5-v2.img.ext2.bz2. What do I have to do to start debian ? |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
MisterSorin, like I said, it isn't the big image file that is the problem. You need to install easy-chroot_0.2.3-1fremantle1_armel.deb and easy-deb-chroot_0.9.36-1fremantle1_armel.deb not the Diablo versions that you appear to have installed instead.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
Thx, I managed to start debian

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
GConf errors solved by copying /etc/gconf and /etc/gconf2xsettings.d directories to the chroot. Doesn't fix pulseaudio, however.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
I replaced the libgcc3 file in chroot of /usr/lib/ure/lib/libgcc3_uno.so with the attached file from the thread. Is that all I need to do? Do I need to update openoffice? How would I do it? Thanks.
Oops I tried to aptitude install openoffice.org and it downgraded it. Now I'm reinstalling the image again and trying something new. |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
rm42: yes, that's right.
andyph666: you only need that file if you updated and broke openoffice. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. |

debernardis: if I do aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade, will it update my openoffice if I just installed the easy debian image again?
|
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
@andyph666 you can try, this didn't break my openoffice.
In the meantime I'm doing the much deeper apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, then I'll apply the Ubuntu hack, and I hope I get the same results as Qole :) |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
Well I'm starting over again. I wouldn't mind openoffice to start a little faster. How would I update openoffice then without using aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade? Thanks again.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
I think I will upload an updated version of the big image file with various hacks in place once I have the testing packages in Extras. I will then be able to push a new set of packages into Extras-testing with a bunch of small fixes and maybe a new image...
The updated image is fast, but it still has no sound... If I were to post a new image, what would people want? I think I should remove Iceweasel and epiphany-browser, since the in-browser Java applet viewers seem broken anyway and the N900 browser is far superior. OpenOffice now works again, and GIMP is great. I guess I should include samba support, along with a good network browser... My oh my, this Fremantle "QA" process is slow. |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
i would suggest to leave the browsers out.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
Thank you very much for such application. It is simply great! I could not believe my eyes yesterday when I first launched the LXDE session.
The openoffice is not slower than the portable version I am using on the desktop. I have been looking in the repository and I found what I was looking for: latex, R and even other less common softwares that I use for work. I guess that to install the software it is enough to do apt-get install [package name]. Is there any space limit? Thank you again! I will be back once I understand a little bit more how it works, because my 2010-wish would be to have also fedora running... :p |

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
I wouldn't mind having a larger image, say 3 GB, just to have a bit more room to grow.
|
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
You can increase image size:
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero bs=1048576 count=500 >> /home/user/MyDocs/debian-m5-v2.img.ext2 |

By the way, I did a full apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. Surprisingly, OOo did not crash at load time, but it did get quite a bit slower and the buttons had no graphics. So, I went back to the stock image for now. |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
After apt-get update + upgrade I have no icon buttons too. Still quick though. I am not sure if it's better to keep or revert.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
Qole, I think you can drop the browsers, plus that will leave room for other apps. I have been playing with kstars and it run quite well on the n900. SImple install, looks OK (perhaps a little small, but it allows zoom), and otherwise fully functional. Thanks for all the work on this. It is bringing me back to my love of Linux... and I can take it anywhere!

I am trying to install texlive, but it keeps giving errors because it is not able to fetch some packages from the repository.
I simply run : Code:
apt-get install texlive Thank you in advance |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
The issue of increasing image size keeps coming up every 30 to 50 posts. I had reports that going over 2GB exposes limits in the FAT file system used on the MyDocs partiton, so I am limiting the image to 2GB. And I don't recommend trying to increase the size.
If you want more space, make a second partiton on a microSD card. It really is the best way. EDIT: closechroot had a bug that should be fixed now. Use "sudo closechroot" from the command line until I have the new version in -testing. |
Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing
marmota: make sure you do an "apt-get update" to make sure you have the current list of packages.
rm42 & debernardis: The full update was a huge chore. I had to hack an udev package to get it to update (it gives instructions when it fails), and I had to install a bunch of packages that were held back from the update. |

By the way, Nokia should seriously give you some kind of award after it's out of testing. This has to be the single most useful project for Maemo. |

after a couple of apt-get update it is working perfectly!

I just checked Extras and easy-debian is there! I need to go get me a microsdhc now!
