Edit: Ok, I don't know what happened, but I actually saved the .pem file to the device first this time before opening the certificate manager (instead of opening the certificate manager directly from the browser) and it seems to have imported it and it works to connect to Exchange. Apparently if you open the cert manager from the browser (by navigating to a .pem file) it doesn't import it correct (even though the cert is listed in certificate manager). So now things are cool.

Thanks!

how did you get the .pem file? i am lost as i cannot connect at all to my work's mfe.

i have had an e71 and an iphone able to connect through my work's server. i get this error when trying with my n900. any suggestions?

The iPhone 3GS is provisionable (earlier iPhones weren't, but - pre OS 3.1 - lied about it), as (I believe, though I can't find anything concrete on this) is the E71, so it would suggest your Exchange system is blocking non-provisionable devices.

If this is the case, your only option currently is to ask your Exchange admin to disable this requirement.

When will the N900 support provisioning? I understand that you may not know, but how could we tell Nokia that is functionality is important? I for one will need it!

Also, is MfE provisional on the N97? If I log in to OWA, I can see:

Might there be other ways to sync the calendar and email? Is there a 3rd party app that can sync regardless of provisionability?

He can create a separate Exchange ActiveSync policy with "allow non-provisionable devices set to true" and it apply it only to your mailbox.

Thank you. I need to see my work schedule and emails on the go, so for me I need this before I can justify purchasing the N900.

Re: Mail For Exchange ?

Here is the issue i am facing with mfe.
I do a firmware update using the Nokia PC suite
I setup my account for Mfe and it works fine.
try to sync it and all is well wit the world.
I setup a wireless connection using the internet connections and try to sync with server and i start getting ' Either the exchange server requires secure connection or account is either disabled"
Any subsequent attempts to sync yield the same error. Deleting the wireless connection does not help either.

Anyone else tried these steps or face similar problems or notice this pattern?

Thank you in advance.

I have not filed a bug, but I found a solution.

When I configure the mail for exchange settings I only select calendar and contacts. And when the first initial sync is finished I enabled email sync in the settings..

So, guys, I am waiting for your feedback. What are the worst problems you experience with MfE solution for Maemo?

I yesterday received N900 and MfE functionality is vital to me. The first sync with MfE 2007 server went without problems. However, it appears that none of the following syncs has been successful. I always get error message:

Error: Either Exchange server requires secure connection or account is disabled.

(The connection is marked as secure, port 443. And why are two distinct reasons combined into a single error message?)

OWA 2007 shows:

[This is N900, only the first successful sync:]
SmartPhone Fri 12/4/2009 07:13 OK
First Sync on: Thu 12/3/2009 18:42
Last Successful Sync: Fri 12/4/2009 07:13
Device ID: 3569380303*****
User Agent: UQExchange/1.0

[This is E71, not anymore in use:]
IMEI3529240245***** Thu 12/3/2009 17:44 OK
First Sync on: Thu 9/17/2009 23:29
Last Successful Sync: Thu 12/3/2009 17:44
Device Friendly Name: Nokia/Mail For Exchange
Device ID: IMEI3529240245*****
Device Model: NokiaE71
Device OS: 00.21.012
Device IMEI: IMEI3529240245*****
User Agent: NokiaE71/2.09(158)MailforExchange

What does the error message mean? Is there some fundamental reason why N900 MfE does not work?

Actually, it appears that some of the syncs are successful and some fail. It might be related to certificates, because I remember getting certificate errors every now and then in E71???? (In E71, you could accept a certificate even if it appeared invalid)

There is for some reason different if you start the mail setup wizard from the settings menu and chose mail for exchange and start the setup wizard if you open email from the menu.

So I had to start it from the settings menu and mail for exchange.

Hope this helps!

N900 Mail for Exchange

Hi all,

Got the device finally and it is indeed amazing device, but I have small problem with the mail for exchange. I didn't find solution from other threads so far. Mail works perfectly, I have setup the mailbox to sync e.g. between 30minutes.

Problem is that it will sync ONLY if the internet connection is ON. If I close all internet connections (mainly to avoid battery run out too soon) it doesn't automaticly connect to internet and sync the mailbox every 30 mins. For example in E55 phone automaticly connects into internet for sync as scheduled and then automaticly closes the connection after completed.

How can I setup the N900 to act in the same way as e.g. E55 Mail for Exchange? Any ideas?

Did you save the certificate for your server manually? M4E on N900 does not save for you like E71. Some have had success, others not depending if your IT department allows non-provisional devices.

I did not save any certificates manually, I just set up MfE settings through the wizard and the initial sync was successful. (Actually I was amazed at that point of time how easy it was to set up.)

However, after the initial sync, the phone has synced successfully only very occassionally (probably 1 in 100 attempts is successful or something like that). If set to automatic sync, the error message is displayed repeatedly on phone display, which makes phone basically useless so I have now set MfE sync to manual.

After reading the forums, the reason could be also that our Exchange server enforces password on the device.

Is it possible to say from the error message that I am getting ("Error: Either Exchange server requires secure connection or account is disabled.") if this is related to the password enforcement or is it some sort of certificate issue?

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

its possible that initial sync ignores certificate as normally your exchange website has to send that to you on first pass. Subsequent passes it would expect the cert to be in place. It would do no harm to install the cert

I have now copied the certificate of the webmail site (https://webmail.hpuss.de/owa) to N900 Documents folder. How is the certificate installed in N900?

I visited the site in N900 browser. It didn't recognize the certficate but allowed to add it as an exception. As a result, I can visit the webmail site through N900 browser, but MfE does not use the certificate. Has MfE got some separate certificate store?

Re: N900 Mail for Exchange

On mail settings you may define when sync is made. By default it is made only when WLAN is available. Just change it to any connection.

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

webmail site will not do it. You will have a specific site for your exchange server. You can get the url to this off the device you are currently using.

you use the file browser on n900 to look at the cert, and it should give you option to install. Once installed you can check that it is there under the control panel certificate application

This is too strict in saying. Many organisations run their MfE over the same server that hosts OWA (Outlook Web Access, the "Exchange Webmail")

OK, thans for your quick advice. I used Windows XP & IE7 to export the certificate in .P7B file format including all certificates in the certication path if possible (that was the only way that N900 showed the "Install" button. It seems that Root certificate is Verisign Class 3 Primary is already in N900, but not the 2nd certificate Verising Class 3 Secure Server or the 3rd which is the actual sercer certificate). I selected the type of certificate as "Server". However, MfE is still produces the same error :(

At least in my case Outlook Web Access (OWA) server and the server specified in Mail for Exchange settings is the same server.

As soon as I left office and was transferred from WLAN connectivity to 3G connectivity, the MfE started to work! It seems that I am also able to connect through my home WLAN.

I don't have any clue why this is the case, but at least at the moment MfE works for me!!! ::D

It would be possible, yes, but the developers have flat-out refused to do this. It's probably in violation of whatever licensing agreements they have with Microsoft, and could well just lead to the N900 getting blacklisted from Exchange altogether.

[QUOTE=vitaly_repin;408106]You are telling it right now. Believe me, it is visible.

I'd like to provide my voice to the provisional / non-provisional discussion.

N900 is the most modern Nokia smart phone with QWERTY and IMHO the best option for a corporate user today.

It is almost a show stopper that the corporate exchange is not usable and may force me to immediately by a competitors' product that works. I for one, am not too worried about the drawbacks of this feature. Corporate IT are quite a responsible & moral people, there's so much else they could misuse as well if they wanted to (but naturally won't).

my first experience with mfe today: i set it up just to sync the calendar from my google account and it worked fine. from the little that i've read here, i'm not sure if there is anything supposed to be wrong with this. the only bug i have encountered is that although the times for my events are correct, their description displays a time that is one hour previous to the time the event occurs. this doesnt affect the functionality, but it is a little odd.

Normally this happens when your time zone or daylight savings settings are wrong

Having the same error here "Either Exchange server requires secure connection or account is disabled",
It was working fine for one week, then it stopped synching after reflashing the n900.
I restored the settings from a backup and it kept flashing this error over and over again.
I removed the device from the mobile devices list in OWA but still no luck.
