Maybe try searching, and reviewing these threads:
(result 1) Firmware to be released Q1 of '10. MMS to be supported.
(result 2) When will the next firmware update be released?

After first 3-4 days it have lasted one day always for this 4 weeks i have owned the device. Be careful what you download especially from extra-dev(it's not meant for you if you are not a developer).

I can say you that Palm Pre, HTC HD2(with 1200mAh) and iphone wont last much longer and in HD2 case even less. I don't know exactly why manufacturres are currently so cheap with the OMAP3 and snapdragon phones with the battery capacities, but at least some Android phones seem to be getting better there.

If you have your doubts sell it. I bought this phone because what it could do then, not what it could do in the future :)

It's likely something you installed. I had great battery life (a day with moderate to heavy usage) until I installed certain apps and now it won't even last a day.

Personally, I'm going with a new Firmware + Ovi Store dual launch....

Seems like it is more than possible this could be the case?

That is my guess too. I also suspect the firmware is paused till the completion of the move of the maemo.org system to a new server. Maemo-extras is enabled by default in the new firmware (or so they tell me) so I don't think they'll release that till the servers can handle the extra load.

I believe some parts of the system are already transfered, the rest expected early next week.

It's not great that you have to pay more, but you can get a cheap pay-as-you-go SIM for another network while you wait. That's what I've done - and put the 3 SIM in another spare handset so I still receive calls and text to my "official" number.

Some PAYG SIMs offer "X minutes for a month" call bundles similar to contracts, that work out to a similar cost.

It's unfortunate that you have to pay twice as much in the meantime, and you might not have a spare handset to receive incoming on your main number... it's not a good solution, just a workaround.

The rest of us have working devices which will do everything we bought them for. The rest of the upgrade will be all well and good. But the people on 3 have a right to mutter.

IMNSHO the people suffering from spontaneous reboots every few hours or less have an even stronger reason to complain... It is said to be fixed in the new firmware, at least for most units.

Those people are already returning their units as defective...

They ought to be getting that kernel fix ASAP as an expedited single-package update - with no other changes. That's what a super-conservative Linux distro would do - in fact even Microsoft would likely roll out a kernel update asap for something like that.

Nokia, please improve your rollout processes! Learn from the stable Linux distros how to do it right...

(Can't say I envy the people who had to find the bug! Looks like an OMAP3 hardware issue, but amazingly they found a workaround).

Contacts and numbers are so small to view on N900, how or can I make that larger and readable?

Besides which, it's not like we don't have a process for this already - simply use the same approach as maemo.org does; testing versions go into the testing repo, get tested, get pushed to release when they're done. Just like (almost) everyone else does.

In any case; there are bugs in the release firmware; if the media were going to rip anyone to shreds surely they'd be as likely to do it over a stubborn refusal to allow people access to known, done, finished and working fixes for those?

Maybe the machine is stuck to the old mode? Upvote http://maemo.org/community/brainstor..._packages-002/ and maybe someday somebody high enough in the management sees the light..

Or sometimes the "'your request is not appropriate for this forum, contact Nokia' graveyard"... Understandable given the workload and need for focus, but also feels like a bit of a fob off, as there doesn't seem to be any useful way to follow that advice.

I suspect a good proportion of the Maemo team would agree, but they might simply be too busy to change their process. It's not that easy to change the way you do things on this scale, even when you are sure it's a good idea. After all there is still a systematic QA process needed, however releases are done.

Still the lack of communication is disappointing.

Re: When will the next firmware update be released?

I'd agree with the powers that be saying that "it will be released when it's ready".

Better to have a true firmware update that addresses as many bugs as possible without any adverse affects to the already stable current firmware.

I remember the N97's V2.0 firmware that everyone was hoping would make it all that it was touted to be. The hype only served as an anti-climax when it was released.

This update now is paving the way for the 1.1 release. Something big must be lurking just around the corner. :)

Re: When will the next firmware update be released?

You need now (when it reaches your country) to do the 'small update' ready to do the 'Big Update' - this is the preliminary.

My guess would be this is also a dry run on how well the infrastructure copes when everyone updates at once. ;)

The old wisdom is that there is never time to changes, so one might do them immediately as later on they are always harder to do. If the organization is twice the size, is change any easier? I do not see how the project scale or QA matters here - basically all active linux distros are doing delayless bugfix updates. It is just about the organizations leaders willingness and skills. 1) identify target 2) find out what is preventing from reaching the target 3) fix the issues.. easy peasy.. :)

That's a good point. It was pretty obvious after this first update that the maemo.org repositories couldn't cope with the load.. has anyone heard about anything planned to deal with this for the next time the world presses "update" simultaneously? Personally, I gave the repository update 5 minutes to complete - when it didn't I just disabled all maemo.org repos, then it completed in under 30 seconds.

Yes, since itīs never been an "official" FW update before it was pretty much expected that they would do a thing like this to try-out their distribution system and also very clever to grant access to ovi-beta and probably going over the numbers of how many people that hit the store after it went up ;)

Personally I prefer they take their time to release a new FW rather then handing out broken/ not enough upgrades or even worse, a firmware that have to be patched over and over to "fix" new problem that occurred with the new shiny FW release.

Just remember to stay away from the dev apps and poke around in rootsh unless you know what your doing, and your phone will be fine till we get the new shiny toys!
