I think most of the apps are nice little demos on what is possible. Some of the themes are really beautiful. Best app is definitely Angry Birds :)

Offscreen apps (at least some) depend on Qt libs, which are not optified on current firmwares. That's likely not going to change until (at least) PR1.2 with Qt 4.6.

Working fine for me, and last I checked Cornwall was part of the UK. (Though I'm among those who argue against it being part of England but that's another matter!)

If it's not working, did you install the update from yesterday? It won't work unless you do, I think.

Once you've done that, click the blue 'ovi' in your menu. The apps are not yet appearing in the app manager (which may be why it is beta).

Edit - it seems to be down right now (Server crash?? Did the US just wake up?) It was working fine this morning. No doubt it will be back.

!2:30 GMT and it seems to be back. Unchanged.

It's not technically open, as the link on the N900 still says coming soon.

Re: OVI STORE is open for business

So was it what people expected???

Bear in mind, I have no experience of 'app-stores' on other devices. I've used some of the free places for palm or java, but never really looked into 'apps' until now. I know my nephews play games on their i-pod touchs so I expected that to be what was meant. And I've seen the ads for iphone apps advetrising things like a banking widget (I've got a browser, thanks).

So I didn't really know what to expect. I'd seen people here saying they desperately wanted "High-quality professional apps". Are these those?

Cos I have to confess I'm underwhelmed. True, not being a gamer I haven't tackled the much vaunted Angry Birds yet (though the solitaire game is extremely weak and featureless). But the rest seem to be Shiny-but-pointless. I can watch a candle. And put it out with my finger... quite fun the first few times. I can spin a mirror ball... how many times? The sand art is quite fun, and the pendulum a great cure for insomnia - but neither are what I'd call major. I could live without them.

By comparison, the apps I installed from extras may be a little less shiny, but they're a lot more use.

So is this what people expected? Am I the one out of step? And will there be more and better to come - or just more of the same?

I clicked on it this morning accidentally (before coffe) and it took me straight to the store. No more "coming soon".

because the file that is downloaded is a simple text file(.install) that contains details about the package, not the package itself which is downloaded later by the Applicatiion Manager. The .install file is typically <1kb (0.001 mb)

RevdKathy. Test itunes+iphone, but thats not probably fair comparison. I even do not when comparison is fair by some people, but somehow you have to classify things in some order.

Test iphones app storage from iphone and make your conclusions after that. I do not say that it's amazing but it's quite good. Even how you can browse high quality big screenshot in end of programs info page made me go wow.

Most of my freinds drive 3 year old candy bars. I don't have any way to test an iphone. My question is, were the apps in the ovi store what you expected?

Hi to all,

I must be the oddman out. I can access it but keep getting
the following.

We're sorry.
The Nokia Account authentication system is currently down. Please try again later. We apologize for the inconvenience.

This comes up with both firefox and my N900.

Any ideas ?

From what I expected from Nokia? Then answer is pretty much yes. Am I thrilled or amazed..no. Should i be? I wish I could, but after using iphones app storage it raised bar to another level :D

.edit
Ohh you asked apps not storage usage experience. Yes they are nice little demos even they are not optimized as they should be optimized. Jerkyness and some of them seems to be non optified.

It's about what I expected, yes. I'd hoped for better, but wasn't surprised at what there was. Yes, it's pretty underwhelming at the moment (apart from Angry Birds of course), but until they get the store out there, developers aren't going to submit applications.

Hopefully we'll see more useful applications arriving soon (and hopefully they fix whatever issues they currently have with access to commercial content).

It has been noted many times in various threads, this is a case of mismatched expectations. Just as a whole lot of people mean 'shiny and animated' when saying 'commercial grade'. Ovi is a distribution channel, it will not make software good or bad. ALL of the things there could have been put into the non-free section Extras and there would be not a single bit of difference. What people do not realize is that it's not an app store they want, but quality applications (or, to be more precise, that they have been 'trained' by Apple's precedent that AppStore equals 'apps you like').

Those should all get pulled in automatically. Do you have the two Nokia repositories enabled & updated?

Start "App manager" and tap on the title bar. From the popup menu, select "Application catalogues". Check you have listed there both "Nokia Applications" and "Nokia System Software Updates" and that they have little globe symbols next to them.

That's very odd then. When you install any of the Ovi apps, the dependencies should be automatically installed as well (as long as they're in one of the configured repositories). I've no idea why it should be failing to do so for you.

ZackMorris 2010-01-13 21:57

Re: OVI STORE is open for business

You should make sure that the catalogues aren't disabled as well. Uncheck that box if it happens to be checked.

Probably tried this but....

Remove the catalogues and re-add them, could just be an odd thing...

Which applications in particular are bringing these errors up (I'm aware it could be lots, but name one or two) will be helpful to know.

Has your device had the update?
Have you enabled extras dev or testing and installed anything? - could also have done something to your device.

I remember when i was installing gpodder i had a similar error - so i was told to remove the conflicted apps and re-install. I had installed an app from extras though :) - not suggesting it will work, but could be heading in that sort of direction if other people can't help?

(P.s. writing in red to get attention is quite annoying)
