Just open Xterm on your n900.. type "sudo gainroot" then paste what I wrote down.. hit enter ... that's all you have to do..

Question. If i wanted to replicate a set of widgets exactly the same locations etc on every screen. Is there a set of configs I can simply copy/mod and achieve this.

As a rule I like to have a clock and a few other standard things on every screen, but the process of making and dragging them to the exact same location (never an easy task) is wearing me down.

I did accidently put 0.99 instead of 99 because I misunderdtood the multiplication description.

btw thx MaddogG for the inormation.
I already had Mohammads modified version installed wich somehow killed my 5th desktop and prevented me even from reinstalling Matans version again. I needed to restore original nokia hildon-desktop for beeing able to reinstall Matans modified one again.
So I got it fixed now and kinetic scrolling is fine, too ;)

I then tried the change backgrounds commands for having the 9 desktops with numbered background images. But when I now change desktop 5 to 9 backgrounds, the chosen wallpaper always is applied to desktop 1 and not to the one I started the change background setting from. (desktops 5 to 9)
^ nevernind, found the solution

I didn't get that I need to change it from file manager in the first place. (I tried it from the desktop menu, wich appears when holding the stylus on desktop for a few seconds)

Same issue.Tried all the commands and everything.Verified that the image location comes up in gconf but still no images are shown.

You forgot some spaces:

gconftool-2[SPACE]-s[SPACE]/apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/6/bg-image[SPACE]-t[SPACE]string[SPACE]/home/user/MyDocs/.images/beach.jpg

The correct command is:

gconftool-2 -s /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/6/bg-image -t string /home/user/MyDocs/.images/beach.jpg

Try this:

convert your image in png format
put it in /home/user/.backgrounds/
rename it "background-x.png" where "x" is the desktop number

and tell me if it works.

If you want to convert the image on the N900, you can install imagemagick (as root, "apt-get install imagemagick") and the use the command "convert jpg_image.jpg png_image.png".

Or you could try this....

cd /home/user/MyDocs
for i in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 ; do wget http://my.arava.co.il/~matan/770/n900/backgrounds/$i.png ; done
gconftool -s /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/active -t list --list-type int [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9]
for i in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 ; do gconftool -s /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/$i/bg-image -t string /home/user/MyDocs/$i.png ; done

that will do it.

(Edit) Once you have done that reboot and all your screens will have no's 1-9... or how ever many you have set to use..
then find the wallpaper you want in your images open it up and then set as the background.. same way you would set the back ground before you had the extra screens..

I had modified-hildon-desktp latest (from the repo) when I updated ota to pr1.3. Now I don't have the modified functionality (no more 6 screens, arrow keys dead, menu shortcuts too) but app manager shows the package. However I can't uninstall. I cant reeinstall with apt-get either (package cannot be downloaded)
Any Ideas?

There is an updated modified-hildon-desktop package (version 3.2) in my repository. Make sure my repository is enabled, and try running (as root)

apt-get update
apt-get install modified-hildon-desktop

(and post the output if it does not work).

Note that you also need to install an enhanced hildon-home package for more than 4 views. See here:

after to be more than one hour trying a lot of ways, at the end was the more easy and stupid thing i ever did, i just update Matan's repository and reintall the modified hildon desktop, and after i used the desktop+ aplication, and all working perfect.
my fail was after to install the modified hildon desktop i saw in therminal there are some packages not updated and i undate whit apt-get upgrade, whit this the modified hildon i think so is overwrite whit the nokia original one.
anyway i dont needed to install the hildon home file and all working perfect;)

well my 7 desktops have returned but desktop+ isn't in my menu. When i go to restore apps in app manager it shows up greyed out, how can i get it back on the device? Anyone got a .deb file?

Regarding the hildon desktop, i think i have the latest, i had matan's repo enabled when i restored the apps so Matan, would that be the latest one? It's v3.2

honestly i dont know, cuz for me in the aplications manager say that the version is 2.1, but if you did apt-get update and after installed it sure is the last one.

Yeah it's weird, because it should have been part of my backup, and it must have been because after restoring i had 7 desktops like i did before - but desktop+ wasn't installed. It's in 'restore applications' but greyed out

Yeah, fcam drivers are also greyed out in the 'restore applications' option and god knows how i'm going to find them!
