Ok, maybe don't do a 'hollow' Q. Just take the 'normal' football as depicted in the above icons and add the 'down-right' part of the Q to it, the part that differentiates an O from a Q, if you get what I mean...

Re: [QSportsEvent] FIFA World Cup and Football App

Hi there! Some more icon request for you :)
  • 'Arrow Down (with underscore?)' for download of league statistics (will be in the 'Select' tab tree view next to the selected season)
  • '?' for a new 'about' tab
  • Icons for 'downloaded' matches and table tabs (the ones that currently have the 'Games' and 'Standings' texts). These will be operational once the download of TeamStats from SoccerDB is implemented (imminent). The base could be the same as for the two existing ones, but maybe with the 'arrow down' added to them to show it is downloaded data? Not sure if the icons are big enough for that though...
  • 'Simple line chart' icon to symbolize the yet to be developed 'statistics' tab. This if for future relesease. I want to display some statistics based on the downloaded TeamStats data.
  • Icons (for display in 'Select' and 'Favourites' tab) and backgrounds for other sports: Am. Football, Basketball, Icehockey. Le't try to keep a 'consistent' look and feel between the backgrounds. They should be 'generic', i.e., no 'league specific' logos included such as the NHL or NBA logos. Please DON'T provide backgrounds for any other sports right now! Let's settle on a nice 'common theme' for those 1+3 major ones before starting with Floorball, Rugby, Cricket, Baseball, Field Hockey and I don't know what else...

Your contributions in the graphics department really help me concentrate on the coding.

One question though... So far, I'm happily including whatever your are giving me. Can you reassure me that I have the right to include it in the app? Are there any limitations to the licences for the stuff you produce and/or find? It's not a big issue now, but once it gets into Extras (sooner rather than later...) I'd rather not have any surprises ;)

thats what i meant by "loosing too much detail when the icon is so small". :( Nobody sees the Q-thing sticking out and people just get confused. Icon design is hard to get right, at the moment i strongly advise to keep it as simple as possible!

Is there anyway of doing this without being root? or is there any chance in the future to instal without being root?

At the moment, I'm afraid you have to be root. As soon as PR1.2 is out, it should be a matter of a day or two for me to make sure everything is OK before uploading it to Extras-Devel again. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

[LIST][*]'Arrow Down [*]'?' for a new 'about' tab[*]Icons for 'downloaded' matches and table tabs[*]'Simple line chart'

Added the following icons to the lightblue icon-set in sizes 32x32, 48x48 and 64x64.

I am not really happy with the ones for the downloaded matches and tables though.
Do you really need those?

Canīt you do somethin like:
-> User selects table from matchday x
-> check if DB contains this matchday
-> (a) if yes, show matchday from DB (maybe with a small symbol indicating data is from DB)
(b) if no, download matchday

Additionally you may want to check if machtday x is from today and if yes, force a download to make sure the most current data is shown in case it is still updated due to ongoing games.
And you can add a button to let the user manually force an update.

This way you donīt need the 2 extra tabs and save valuable screen space.
And I think for the users its also easier because they dont have to care about which tab to choose and where tha data comes from (online or offline) unless they want to...

I guess the naming convention is according to ISO 3166? That'll make it easier for me to map to them in the app.

Is this solved already?
For XP there is a powertoy for picture resizing and also an alternative for Vista (http://prishcom.spaces.live.com/blog...5411!128.entry)

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

Hi!

I need some help again... QSportsEvent allows us to enter an RSS feed to be displayed in the 'News' tab. The one I have for the Italian Serie A is http://www.gazzetta.it/rss/Calcio.xml. When I enter it and look at the 'News' tab it is utterly unreadable. I believe it should be possible to apply a CSS style sheet to it, and a Google search resulted in this. However, reading that example it seems that I have to add the reference to the stylesheet in the XML file itself. Obviously, I don't have the file. Is there a simple way to apply a CSS to an RSS XML document? Worst case, I'll download the XML to the device, update it accordingly and render the local copy. Certainly, there must be better ways of doing this...

Thanks again if you are able to find something for me!

And as a side note, I have started updating the QSportsEvent Wiki page with some information about the planned releases.

QSportsEvent Wiki

Hm, canīt you look how other rss-readers do this job?
I mean they are doing exactly that, download a feed and show it in an at least readable format...

The wiki page is a nice idea and I also follow your twitter feed.
Its cool how you keep us all updated on your work and plans

BTW: its only 47 days left until v0.2.0 !!! :D
Hopefully :p

This has nothing to do with the app..but with football. Here is the (PES 2010) game with most yellow/red cards in the history of the world.

Italy 14 yellow cards and 4 red cards. France 14 yellow cards and 5 red cards. Italy win by default:

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

A couple of thoughts from me regarding the discussion about the app icon.
I read a couple of times that due to the 64x64 / 48x48 size of icons there is a limitation regarding details. True, of course, an icon cannot show the NY skyline in every detail. But the limitation does not mean it has to be plain and boring.
I think, an icon, that is sexy and appealing for the user, should
- Depict the feature/scope of an app clearly / quickly understandable without quoting the app name
- Have at least some shiney, glossy, 3D or whatever effect to make it look professional
- be done nicely regarding graphic designing, sharp, not too much details, especially when its a simple one, there should be something that makes it look special.

Personally I am quite happy with the current one. The soccer skinned Q is done nicely as well as the soccer field. Both can be recognized easily, are not too small from my point of view and practically scream soccer ;-)

BTW@Magnuslu:What confuses me is, that so far all icons created follow the soccer theme, while you are planning to implement other sports. As soon as more sports are supported, a soccer themed icon will be obsolete - right? Can you please clarify your plans here?

The problem is that all HTML based rss readers I know of would do 'server side includes'. As the app doesn't have any 'server side', I have to do a 'client side' include instead. I've found this link and am working into including that into the app.

Ok, I'm giving up on this one (for now...). I'll have to learn more about JavaScript and CSS and how it works in the webkit browser of the device to get this to work. I'll attach my attempt so far (renamed to .txt to be able to upload it here) in case someone can find the obvious flaws. It is not properly rendered in IE and, critically, in the app.

What it has is one CSS style, one JavaScript function to load the XML and then a call to the function to render the whole thing, however it all looks awful! I'm sure it's mainly because of my extremely limited CSS knowledge...

I would like to ask how the hell does he get all those data? I don't think he paid for them.

So maybe start with a full application for the worldcup and make it better after that?

OK how about Spain, I love them.

Just installed 0.0.5, the basic idea is there.
Thanks, magnuslu and everybody else, great app. It will be very useful especially for people in the US, we don't get to watch the games so easily.

I did have to install the libqt4-webkit, and the first lunch crashed.

Kangyu, El Amir, thanks a lot for your offer to contribute here!
But the app does not rely on user uploads. Magnuslu gets the data from an online source - SoccerDB. Data on SoccerDB is uploaded by the online community. You may, but dont have to upload results there...A feature to upload from the app is planned by Magnuslu.

(for further details on data source(s) see discussions in this thread)

I notice that after reading the post toward the end, it is a long post..

I am looking at the www.livescores.com for Chelsea game. just look around on their website, find this screenshot, of course for iphone only, but looks nice. I believe we will have something like that, or even better.

One thing I cannot find from livesocres is standings.

When it comes to sports sites that works well on the NIT I've used the http://devphones.appspot.com/nfltoday/#home site with good results (it looks better on my N810 than on the PC due to ads not showing on it for some reason) :)

I like the UI as well and it even looks a bit Maemo5ish.

No worries, its for sure a pain to read every post in a monster thread like this one...Unfortunately repeating or off-topic posts make this even worse.

I think because of that creating a QSportsEvent wiki page was a good idea from Magnuslu to give new users a quick overview of what the app is about.
(For those interested news and updates from Magnuslu can even be followed here via Twitter / RSS.)

Maybe the community can help Magnuslu completing and updating the wiki?

I read the wiki, and was trying to find how to install. But it says "from this (to be inserted) post", which forced me to look through this post.

Is any reason not putting the post in the wiki?

I guess the only reason is that Magnuslu seems to be focused on coding (See his Twitter)
I would do it myself, but I have no garage account yet and first of all a very tight work schedule. Wonīt have a lot time to help here for the next 4 weeks due to a business trip to Asia. :(

Maybe someone else can support Magnuslu here and keep some administrative tasks away from him so he can concentrate on coding?

OH YES, thanks for the hint.
Calendar integration is something for To-Do-List!?
E. g. let the user create a calendar entry for certain matches / events right from the app. There is a app that does exactly this for TV shows, its called "Showtime".
Unfortunately this is another feature that would require another data source as SoccerDB does not provide match times, right?

What do you think Magnuslu? Possible? Realistic?

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

QSportsEvent 0.0.6 is now available for testing! The main new feature is the ability to download the full results for a league. How do you do that?

1. Make sure to select a league (either from 'Favourites' or from 'Select')
2. Go to the 'Downloaded Matches' tab, i.e., the second from the right. You will see an empty screen.
3. Click on the 'Download' icon near the top left.
4. 'Loading' will be displayed. It normally takes approx. 30 seconds.
5. Done! Now you can see all the rounds for that league as well as the table.

The other new feature is the ability to select a 'default' favourite. If you select one, the app will launch with the results page for that league.

The usual caution apply:

1. Manually uninstall any previous versions first (I've never tested installing on top on an existing one)
2. Your database will be replaced, so you will loose all your favourites and all URLs you have entered (I will try to figure out a solution for this...)
3. The app does use your Internet connection and there is no 'optimization'. The pages and data downloaded are not huge, so there should not be a big problem, but at least you've been warned...

I've fixed a number of other issues, so I am happy to receive reports about any issues you may encounter. I'll report the first one:

Tab: Downloaded Matches
Type: Bug
Severity: Normal
Description: The font for the labels and comboboxes are white on white background. They should be black.

For more info, visit the wiki page.

For Diablo you can get it from Extras-Devel as it doesn't have the PR1.2 dependency issue. Some users are reporting SQLITE issues on Diablo, some not. Let me know how it goes.
