If this ever became a reality, I don't think you would hear too many people complaining about the N900 any more.

I had already started a thread around a week ago called "Easy Android".

The idea is sound, getting the idea to work is different....
Seems like it's a long shot, but you never know! :D

kexec would shutdown the previous kernel as it starts the new one, and this is the tricky part, if the ram is in a state the new kernel does not "like" it will crash, kernel panic.

Saying that, I'm not as naive as I'm sounding - obviously the small issue of the n900 being a Nokia device has something to do with it. Just dreaming really...

The same reason why there's no Google Maps or lots of commercial apps on the N900. Not enough userbase to warrant the effort.

Would a kernel change be strictly necessary? If the android patches were added to titan's kernel for example, then would it be just a case of stopping conflicting maemo services and starting android?

At this point DJ_Steve is more comfortable starting with the kernel in an existing android build, I think. Perhaps something like this could happen in the future after there is a build that works well enough.

Well, when it comes out to the Droid, which has the exact same chipset as the N900. My logic tells me porting that firmware over to NITDroid would enable it to run great.

Hopefully we would all have flash 10.1 Maemo 5 by then.

Can someone give me some steps how to install android on my microSD and get a dual boot with android and maemo?

So we would be able to use flash 10.1 on nitdroid on the n900 but we wouldn't be able use android market place apps?

He'll get it... it just may take time to knock off some of the issues. Right now he's working on wifi failing to scan, I think.

Other issues (in my personal opinion of importance)

Phone (including data)
Sound
Accelerometer
Charging
Camera
.
.
FM radio/transmitter

Well this project is coming along nicely. Proves that there is nothing the iphone can do, that a little knowhow and hard work can't achieve on the N900.

Sent a few bucks your way DJ_Steve. Keep up the good work mate.

yeap !! i got a question : will it be possible to install apps from google market (when wifi or phone will be working) ? and... will it be possible to have both os in the boot menu, but i mean with android installed on the phone and not on a separate microsd card ?

actually the work they have done for iphone would be harder than the N900 due to the iphones closed codebase,.

market etc may work once phone works but its not cooperating too much currently

wow nice job people, even though i know nothing of programming, i can see alot of hard work and effort is being put in the project.

if a stable andriod 2.1 for n900 actually comes out, i honest am ready to pay money to buy it.

Forgive me if I am incorrect since I am a complete newbie about this project. I want to ask if you can extract some drivers etc from the firmware files of Motorola Milestone/Droid and use them in running android on n900??

yep im intendign to try and steal things from droid/milestone but actually using the droid/milestones rootfs itself wont work (tried that already)

Have you thought about contacting cyanogen. He does custom roms for most android platforms. Perhaps he can help in some way?

dj_steve 2010-05-13 19:18

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

bear in mind cyanogen only builds for google devices not new ports - i am planning a cyanogen port though once ihave something usable

Hi Steve and very nice work, this is an amazing effort you are putting in. I just found this thread, when do you think you will a fully working, ready for daily usage, Android build?

cant even try to answer that yet, as im the only person at the moment doing major dev on ths and ive got a lot of hurdles(read nokia propriety crap) to get around/fix

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

Hey man! Cant thank you enough for dedicating time working on this! I bought the N900 knowing this would happen eventually and i guess you're the only one man enough to go for it eh? AND feels so good to find a brit doing some major tech stuff for once :P (could tell by the accent :P),

Quick questions though, probs been answered before, but is there like a Bootloader which lets us choose between android and maemo? and is there any portrait support? that'd be awesome...yes landscape is good, but really annoying sometimes! Oooh and when you release it, will you set the home button as the backspace key? i think soft touch camera key would be awesome, just saves the hassle of opening the phone everytime, although it MAY conflict with the camera somehow, nevertheless they got it working on maemo, will probs work on android too without conflicting :) Just a suggestion but cool with anything :D

Thanks again for doing this! You'll go down in N900 history :D

Good luck man!

Really wish I knew anything about coding as I would love to be able to help you with this. You're doing a damn fine job on your own though man!

Just fyi I didn't get the wifi working on the N900 using the source from android. I built the wpa_supplicant from

git://git.omapzoom.org/platform/external/wpa_supplicant.git

This got me past the point of not being able to scan for wifi networks.

Hope this helps

That omapzoom site is interesting they have a omap android project and a maemo project. check it out

The first page is a bit out of date with regard to the N900 progress that has been made.

The N900 guide there is referring to another guys earlier work.
