Latest version segfaults for me. Are there some data files lying around that I can try deleting?

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

some quick comments on the latest version:

- looking very polished, love the eye candy
- startup time is very slow
- using it on a 3g connection is killing your quota, probably for the never ending fetching of the album cover art
- CPU load is 60% at 950 MHz while playing ... a tad high I guess (but with speakers so with earphones it will be less thanks to the pulseaudio speaker protection)
- overall RAM usage is 77% but that's also depending on other processes loaded but not active.
- network activity : according to conky, almost constant 2 KB/s upload, 31 to 71 KB/s peak download.
- whole device feels very sluggish when being used
- severe lag pressing buttons (prev/next song etc.)

I have a small library of 1200+ songs on my SD card, no other programs open (apart from Conky). Availability is offline.

If the speed issues are solved, then this would be a very nice, usable (if some form of quick jumping, index char or keyboard based- to songs is there) player.

if most of the issues are temporarily (eg. fetching related), please provide some form of status indication to let the user know what's going on, why we feel we are running at 250 Mhz while I'm actually nicely overclocking ... ????

Also give an indication how many songs/albums it still will try to process, for my peace of mind :)

Please keep up the good work and address the speed issues first.

;) It's on the todo list but it's not high up. There are several approaches to doing gapless playback... doing that kind of processing on maemo seems like a waste of battery. We're currently thinking of offloading heavier computation onto the desktop. We have a mac alpha and will be rolling out win and linux versions too. Once those are solidified, we'll enable gapless playback from the desktop so that it works on maemo.

The speed issues are what we're working on now. At the moment it's the same code that's running on the desktop (completely unoptimized). We need to make a few bigish changes to improve memory and speed but we've got 2 and a half people working on it around the clock :)

That's probably more than what they have working on PR1.3.

Hey Lisa, you're in the right place. We've ordered a pair of nokia bluetooth earphones to test with. We don't currently support bluetooth audio but I doubt very much it'll take us more than a day to get that in there for you. We need to fix speed/memory/bug issues first but this is one of the first things we'll get to when we start adding new features. :)

Installed this app to my N900 today. Uninstalled 15 minutes later. Too slow. I was not able to smoothly scroll list of albums/artists :(

did you let the application to scan all your musics through or did you begin to use the app immediately?

Started to use - if app needs time to do scanning etc then it should tell it to user. I use mediaplayer rarely and expect it to be usable.

I hope you realise that the indexing must be done once and after that there is no need unless you add/remove music from device?

The updates have been posted in this thread, so you'll have to download and install them manually (or wait until new versions get pushed to Ovi).

To that end, for anyone willing to do some more beta testing we have a released on http://instinctiv.com/b.deb . It doesn't contain any new features but should contain a few optimizations and bug fixes. If you install it please let us know what your experiences are with it. ~ PB

Thankyou so much Peter. This is wonderful to hear.
I assume it will be an update via the phone when any changes are made?
I look forward to it...

The player seems to be a little slow and stuttering when pressing power button. Would be best if the app have auto rotate built in. It's a nice little app but still a long way from final version.

Check a few pages back. There's 2 .deb files, b.deb being the latest, which you can download onto your n900 and install with dpkg -i b.deb.

If you don't how to use Linux commands on terminal, i think it will be more useful for you to just download the .deb file, go to File Manager and click the executable. App Manager will do the rest. :)

Wrong thread. Please refer to the right threads about how to install .deb Files if you need assistance. It's quite simple actually, but this is the wrong thread.

By the way, the file works fine, Im assuming you're entering the wrong commands.

As Haus3r said, this is not a help_newbies_on_linux thread, but... :p Weird thing that installing from File Manager doesn't work for you, may be because having a corrupt/incomplete file? try downloading it again, and if it still refuses to install type this:
Code:

sudo gainroot
cd /to_the_path_your_downloads_are_stored
#if you are lost, try find / -name b.deb
dpkg -i b.deb

Should work (if doesn't, you are doing something wrong :p probably specifying wrong path or file name)

Can you guys please tell me how to donate?

We're closing in on a nice update -- still mostly bug fixes, minor polish but should scratch a lot of itches. PS: Still not taking donations ;) Believe me though, you'll hear from us when we run out of $ ~ PB

To everyone else... If you don't want to mess around with the terminal when installing 3rd party .deb packages, just open the default file manager, navigate to the .deb file and tap it. It will launch the Application Manager and install said package. Why are people suggesting using the terminal is beyond me.

Same problem here. I am not sure though if it's because it crashed during retrieving the album art. Does it need to finish before it saves the already retrieved album art?

Love the work you guys are doing! I am sure once you solved the main bugs it will be a much better player than the standard one!

Eagerly waiting for the next OVI update for this app. I am forced to stop using the current version for the past two days... very slow and stuttering audio... but, stuttering audio is very common issue with N900.. Phew... I just want Multimedia apps and the browser work well in N900.. I can certainly live with other issues...

We're testing a variety of solutions to the speed problem. BTW, if anyone has experience with memory overlays, or in general dealing with data sets that are far larger than what memory can accommodate that gracefully (and quickly) accept inserts, deletes and sorts please reach out to me at peter at instinctiv. I'll fill you in on the details over email/im. If not, don't worry guys, we have a number of good solutions just none that we can implement super fast. Thanks for hanging in there!

While you get all that^ sorted you might want to add some small indicator that the program is working. Perhaps a "Pop Tart" announcing it is retrieving art work or building the DB.
A small animation of a disc spinning on end would do the trick too.

A lot of the resistance you may see with people attempting to adopt this as a new player may be from folks who think the thing has crashed while it is performing those functions.

Also, how does it determine what art to use. That is, does it look for embedded art first and use that?
If none is found will it look for a "folder" or "cover" file in the directory before going out to search for it?
Is there a default image if none of the above are found?
Can the art be changed by the user later?

Nice start BTW. :)

KGreb 2010-07-27 02:38

FWIW, the player is crashing on every WMA lossless file I have tried.

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

hey Peter, it's been a few days, any update? Leaving for holidays soon, would love to have a usable version to take with me :D

One thing: 'consistent' Cover caching doesn't work, it reloads all cover art after restart which always takes a bit of time. May be get the player to store image files in the corresponding music folders to allow quicker caching times?

Eagerly awaiting your next release :)

I have never ever been able to get it to play on instinctive shuffle.. I always get the analyzing error...

Will it ever stop or does it just not get a mood map if there are songs it doesn't know? I have a lot of weird danish underground punk mp3's that I guess you don't know about, but it could just not play those I guess.. :)
