probably not the best place to post about package help but ill try anyway.
make sure the package manager is on a seperate usb. when performing the jailbreak, leave all usb ports free except for the n900 port. once the exploit is working, then put in your usb with the package manger, and try then.

do it as fast as you can as they don't release new fw to fix it and update you while repairing

Is it normal that modern warfare 2 doesn't even play from original bluray without n900 plugged in? (screen stays black untill you eject the game and ps3 restarts when it discarts the bluray)

and also what are the differences in the backup managers, is 1 more safe then the others?

hi, my problem is that when i hold the eject for 7 seconds i dont hear a beep, my tv is complete black,

my kernel -power
the 3 files are in root folder
chmod +x *.sh
chmod 444 *.ko

and i ran the
./psfreedom-enable.sh

then plug to ps3, turned on ps3 + hold eject.

by the way my ps3 version is 3.15

Re: N900 PS3 Jailbreak Detailed How-To

Since I couldn't find the answer in this thread I'll try asking again - When I backup a game unto the PS3's HDD, which format does it save it in?

Also about the pirating thing - here's my view on it:
1. Say you bought a game and you backed it up. You lost the disc/it broke and your HDD died. I think it wouldn't be that bad to download an image of the game you own(ed).
2. This is to the people who get screwed by VAT and additional countries that have extra taxes - When you spent all your money on hardware and don't have enough for the software IMO it's okay to pirate once in a while.
Obviously there's a counter argument - if you bought a car and can't afford gas would you steal some? Well, it's wrong, I'd never do it but I can't somewhat understand people who do because gas prices are ridiculously high for idiotic reasons (don't be fooled, there's no terrible fuel shortage like the news leads you to believe)

1) from what i understand, the game rips into a folder structure, so there is no "format" - this concept is backed up by the ripping process, where you can see the files are all being backed up one by one. what im saying is, the disc's files arent saved as an image file, but rather just directly copied into the same folder trees as they are on the disc.

2) if you own a disc and it breaks, it doesnt justify piracy. backing up software in itself is illegal, in pretty much every country - anything with copy protection on it (dvd's, cd's, games) cant be circumvented. anything without copy protection youre usually okay to copy, but in this case, youre not.

to say you can pirate because you pay taxes is a joke, IMO. your statement is like saying "everyone gets stressed, its okay to let out some steam once in a while by assaulting someone with a baseball bat". also, no, there is no fuel shortage, but the high prices are more a reflection of society's (read: people in high places) ethical desire to cut down on the use of fossil fuels.

finally, just because i dont agree with what you said, doesnt mean i will never pirate. at the end of the day, if you have to justify downloading something to other people, youre doing it for the wrong reasons. the only person you need to give you the "ok" to pirate is yourself. whether or not you get busted, though, is another thing ;)

i have just been using the stealth MW2 backup manager, although ive heard of a sonic superstar tennis and PJ monsters demo version. you tell me whats more obvious to sony, though...a large number of people playing the PJM demo, or a large number of people playing MW2? hmm....

oh and also, ive been playing with no internet connected, and on a different user profile..you never know. haha. although ive hardly run my backup manager at all...still too early to be flogging it.

Re: N900 PS3 Jailbreak Detailed How-To

This method is slick and awesome but I am afraid of getting my $500 device banned by Sony. Do you think I can hack it and remove traces of hacking if I format the HDD later on?

tom047 2010-09-06 15:06

Re: N900 PS3 Jailbreak Detailed How-To

flydeep: possibly, if you dont play anything online. not sure what the console stores while offline or where it stores it. your best bet is to wait a couple of weeks, til a bit more is known about how the whole thing works.

flydeep 2010-09-06 15:10

Re: N900 PS3 Jailbreak Detailed How-To

Thanks Tom, I have been thinking the same and waiting for a while before I do the hack. It is hard to resist when you have everything you need at hand but end up waiting.

Looks like our N900 beat it to punch among all devices out there and it is a good feeling :)

The system will not go online with the hack and I haven't updated my OS in a while. I am think that formatting the HDD will revert it to factory default condition but that coming from someone who is familiar with PS3 hardware will be nice.

Well first of all thanks for the answer.

Secondly, just for the sake of argument - It's not because I pay taxes, it's because of the end result - ending up paying twice (sometimes even more) as much as people in, say, the US pay for it. I think it's just plain unfair for regular consumer joes.

Also I really don't get the baseball analogy. Doesn't really make sense in that context. Physical harm =\= stealing since it's a much more severe crime because nothing can really justify it.

Anyway, holding out till MohammadAG to release his app for the hack - It's going to be awesome!

When it goes back to the xmb it should show the disc of the backed up game that you selected. You can then launch it.

on second page there is patched psgroove that enables backup, the official doesn't support it

Re: N900 PS3 Jailbreak Detailed How-To

Could someone help me? I have followed the guide on the first page but I'm not still able to backup games with either of the backup managers. Problem is that I do not have options to backup game to either external or internal hard drive. I only see game in the backup manager but no options at all. I am using Titan's power kernel and have used patched power version of files.

Has anyone experienced the same problem?

Juanma9 2010-09-06 19:01

Re: N900 PS3 Jailbreak Detailed How-To

ZogG thats not my problem.. i already have the manager working, i do the back up of the game but then when i try to load it from the manager it jus takes me back to the ps3 menu and nothing happens.. and the backed up game that im trying to load doesnt show, it only shows the game that is inserted in the reader.. maybe the game im trying is not compatible. ive tried both fifa 09 and nba live 09

ZogG was completely correct. Without the patched version, this exact issue happens where the game on the XMB is not changed to the one you selected in the Backup Manager.

Just download the patched version for your kernel from the first post.

ironm8 2010-09-06 19:22

Re: N900 PS3 Jailbreak Detailed How-To

just FYI, this is abit wierd but only some of the games are going back to XMB before enabling to lauch the backup.

For Example: launching NBA 2010 backup will go straight to the game while God Of War 3 backup will first go to XMB and then you could launch it as the disc was inside.

Clearly im pretty thick but........

Installed rootsh and openssh.

Opened the n900 on the pc in mass storage mode and copied the 3 files to the root folder.

Went to x terminal and typed what it says on the front page.

Not working.

Which part of the idiot guide am i failing on and can someone simplifiy it further as im stumped.

Re: N900 PS3 Jailbreak Detailed How-To

If you used Mass Storage mode, then you did not read and follow the guide in the first post correctly. It directs you to use your local network and winscp to send the files and not a usb connection.

This is NOT the real root!
the home directory while in mass storage mode is home/user/MyDocs.
you have to copy the files though SSH or dowload them directly onto your N900 and then untar them.

okay, i'll try it again - without patched jailbreak you can backup but backup load option is not working, you have to use patched one. i had the same problem u did and i changed JB to patched and i have loaded game in menu

ofcourse you can, find them with one of the file managers(filebox, modnight commander ect ect).
then copy them to root.

you will find them under home/user/MyDocs

I put:

it says:

BusyBox v1.10.2 (Debian 3:1.10.2.legal-losso30+0m5) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built in commands.

Nokia-N900-51-1:~#

i type:

Nokia-N900-51-1:~#chmod +x psfreedom-enable.sh

it says:

chmod: psfreedom-enable.sh: No such file or directory

just do like that

root
cd /home/user
mkdir psfreedom
cd psfreedom
mv /home/user/MyDocs/psfree* . (dot important as it says to copy to current dir)
chmod 777 *.sh
chmod 444 *.ko

and than u use run "./psfreedom-enable.sh" or diable from than dir, it means you need to do "cd /home/user/psfreedom" everytime you go on root before u run ./psfreedom-blahblah

Status update, app's ready, just need to polish the UI (which I would've finished today but it's a school night :/) then I'm pushing it to -devel, compatible with both omap1 and power40 kernels

Hopefully will be released tomorrow :)

http://i51.tinypic.com/2e37pev.jpg
Also added a kernel messages logger + exporter, if anyone encounters problems diagnosing them should be easy
