Also, remember to always unplug device (be it HUB, stick, mouse, whatever) from N900 before trying to start from scratch. Cable and adapter can sit on N900, but nothing can be connected to them. You can connect anything only after setting speed (then, do not exceed 3-4 seconds before You click VBUS ON, but also don't do it 0.1 second after plugging device - not too late, not too early), otherwise you get exact same errors. At least, that is in my case, always, 100% reproduceable.

Hmmm... I tried this with a new powered USB hub with my keyboard+mouse, but no luck. What's strange is that the keyboard and mouse work fine by themselves when not through a hub.

Here is dmesg output after a failed attempt and also a success with just the mouse:

Re: Thread for problems getting USB hostmode working.

Woah! I switched to "full speed" instead of "low speed" with the hub and keyboard+mouse combo and now it works! Also, switching to "full speed" instead of "high speed" seems to have fixed my sd card reader (I had been sure it was USB 2.0... guess not)

But, if Your second line in output after executing "/charger" is like:

...then you need to press ctrl+c (that will stop script and allow You to type in same terminal window again) and execute:

/charger

...again. This time You're done for sure.

Last but not least, Your question about externally-powered things, like hard disc. I suppose that you know about "y-cable" thing to charge while hostmode, OR - method that i prefer - USB 2.0 active HUB (this way You DON'T need "y-cable"). Then, if your HDD or CD/DVd is powered externally by own power supply - that doesn't matter for charging while hostmode at all. HDD use own power, and Your N900 use Y-cable power or active HUB power.

By "active hub" do you just mean a powered hub? Will any powered hub work for this? Even if I don't charge while in hostmode a powered hub should reduce the drain on my n900 battery, right?

I tried this with my powered hub earlier. Got my mouse/keyboard/sd reader all working ("full speed") and then ran boostoff. Instantly the devices stopped working. Ran the charge script, the devices still were not working. Am I doing something wrong?

Re: Thread for problems getting USB hostmode working.

Yea, active hub SHOULD mean powered HUB - I use "should" because with so much designs and sometimes, pseudo-designs, You can never be sure. anyway, in 99% powered hubs, You will also get power on line connected to N900 - not so much possibility for manufacturers to limit that, would require very complicated circuit and probably conflict with device power-on-port discovery - so N900 should charge.

It's indeed strange that Your devices stop working when You try to use charger script. Maybe Your power supply can't provide enough current to power both keyboard/mouse and N900? Its strange a little, because mouse and keyboard don't need much power.

now i ve also got some issues wid h-e-n on my device...
it reads my keyboard, mouse and my 4gb pendrive but it fails to read my 1 TB.:mad:i cant figure it out.though the light gets light up when connect to n900 but it says unable to connect no file system found....plz plz help me make it work...my hard drive(1tb) is working perfectly in my lappy...
ps. my hard drive does not require an external power..

First of all, are You sure that in this specific case, You don't need external power supply? As it was mentioned in HEN wiki and many posts, N900 can provide only 200 mA of current, where Your laptop (or any "regular" computer" port) is capable of putting 500 mA.

Thats the case, why many power-hungry peripherals that work fine on desktop/laptop need powered hub or Y-cable on N900.

also, You may want to read cheve feedback few posts before - he succeed getting his HD to work by just slowing down mounting process (that's probably unrelated, but worth try)

---

Side note - and thats only my personal opinion - if You consider using less "luser like" shortcuts in Your posts, it would be much easy to read them.

Sorry to have to tell you this isn't correct - most hubs separate external power from upstream port, if only by a very cheap single-diode-design (see http://freeyourphone.de/portal_v1/vi...ed1805c3#p6266 and http://people.openmoko.org/joerg/Y-Cable/USB-HUB.jpg , http://people.openmoko.org/joerg/Y-Cable/USB-HUB.txt ).
Some hubs (obviously the one in post above that estel answered is one of them) even *sense* if there's power from upstream and accordingly power up the downstream ports, even though external power to hub is applied.

Generally speaking you'll need the Y-cable between N900 and hub, not usually though between hub and peripheral.

There's a very simple test if *your* hub supplies power to upstream port: power the hub, connect *switched off* N900 to upstream port with adapter. If N900 shows any reaction (startup, LED flashing etc) then the hub delivers power to N900. Otherwise not.

cheers

Re: Thread for problems getting USB hostmode working.

Again no need to sorry - it's very useful info, that you provided. I'm sorry that i provided wrong info -strange thing, that all USB 2.0 HUBS i used doesn't separate power from upstream port, i was really sure that it's common habit.

If they tend to separate it, they do it with some rationale, do they? What is the danger of using non-separating USB hub?

I encountered only one strange - amusing, but not dangerous - thing when using such a hub. It was powered by ATX power supply, that i use also to power my other things around computer, like WC (water cooling, not toilet) fan controller - using 5V to operate and 12V to power up ventilators. One time, my ATX was turned off, while HUB still connected to it and to my notebook. What was my surprise, when on notebook power-on, Fan controller also waked up - fans we're not turning, but controller itself worked. It turned out that power from my notebook flow by the upstream port of HUB and its power plug to the (powered down) ATX power supply, then, by its lines, to fan controller. I just wonder if this single-diode design can also separate-to-powerplug power, not only powerplug-to-separate - will check that.

i m preety sure it does not require external power source.i ve also tried cheve method of slow mounting but it didnt solve my problem.
what do i do now? plz go through my attachment.
do i need to use a usb hub/y connector and a usb charger to supply d deficient charge??

* Davicom DM9601 USB 1.1 10/100Mbps Ethernet devices, but is using chip sr9600 which is the "'same copy" but I do not really know why is not working, may be different registry addressing or similar. Look your source code sr9600.c, second row is the email of the guy that wrote this driver, your best bet is to contact him.
Quick search in google - revile that it has something to do with kernel and architecture AMR ? I look trough the code but as I said before I do not write "C" code so I can not help further...

Greetings, mveplus

Hi, sorry for bothering... but I guess that I have found the way to make the device sunrise 0fe6 8101 t work. Once you managed to compile the thing, I believe you have the file dm9601.h and everything else.

I tried to compile against v46, within n900 itself installing gcc, (the readers are already installed) patching the makefile, etc and etc... well - it didn't work.

SO, would you mind, IF possible, to go to the dm9601.h file and add this line:

DM9601_DEV( “SUNRISING USB Ethernet”, 0×0fe6, 0×8101,
DEFAULT_GPIO_RESET )

(the explanation being here: http://21500.net/?p=616) to that file so that the dm9601.ko it will start to detect the thing by itself? Unless you already did that, and then I'm lost.

Thank you!

No such problems here ... I use h-e-n together with extmou. Mouse cursor moves always as it should, only it is sometimes (rarely) not visible. What do you mean by "open mouse cursor"? For me, mouse curser appears automatically after the mouse is recognised after Enumerate.
Hope that helps. Also, did you try with a different mouse?

hello,

Got it all working but my keyboard(low speed usb) can't type special characters and/or numbers in xterm. However in dosbox everything is working fine so I think it must be some setting in keyboard or language. But I dont' know where to look for this problem ;)

Didn't try other applications yet, will do and see if its only xterm or maemo in general...

She's using bt-hid scripts, and You're using extmou (and probably, extkbd). In bluetooth-hid there was entry in menu for enabling cursor. Anyway, extmou is more stable (even qole stated somewhere that probably only one advantage that bt-hid package have over extkbd and extmou is special support for Easy Debian). So, solution for trisha02 is to replace bluetooth-hid scripts with extkbda and extmou.

Again, use extkbd - following manual, You will get to the point where You set correct keyboard layout (using GUI).

I don't know if it was necessary to uninstall and reinstall h-e-n, but anyway, this thread
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=66141
suggests that you should uninstall bt-hid first, if you want to use extmou.
If you cannot find "extmou" try searching for "Mouse support" in the app manager. It should be in the extras-testing repository.

Re: Thread for problems getting USB hostmode working.

In my system, the only way to make everything work out of plugging it to the n900 is by plugging it first to my Cyber-Power Hub. If I don't do that first, always sounds like there's something in the connection because it never detects or keep saying "device no accepting address x, error y". SOMETIMES it will detect, but is REALLY difficult.

SO, I would recommend to, before trying to use H-E-N, to use some GOOD/BRAND hub to filter out any noise.

Estel 2011-06-21 23:49

Re: Thread for problems getting USB hostmode working.

In fact I'm using hub that cost me 3$ - bought new from Internet store, with few other things. Still, it's working reliably with Hi-speed (2.0 - measured with adequate tools), and of course provide possibility to charge N900 without Y-Cable (in the same time isolating power plug from mainline of USB - i tested it they way joerg_rw suggested. IDK how it works, but still, it works and N900 is properly charged during hostmode).

So, i would filter GOOD/BRAND out, and just leave GOOD ;)

trisha02 - You probably need to enable extras-testing repository, while You just have extras enabled.

http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-testing <- in this article, You'll find all information about this repository, with instruction how to enable it. Don't be scarred by all that things about blowing brain, frying dog etc - of course this usual warnings apply as always, but extkbd is pretty stable and it should be in extras for a long time (probably, too less people cared to vote).

To be on safe side, You can just disable extras-testing after that - ho ever, You will need to enable it or even extras-devel every time You want to install something that doesn't reside in extras (or extras-testing). Ho ever, if You use such things as HEN, You're probably not so easily scarred by "beta" packages, aren't You?

Thread name: "[ANNOUNCE] Mouse Support - extmou"

So apparently, it is ;)

Anyway, out of ideas, sorry (of course You uninstalled bt-hid scripts before installing extmou, yes?). Try asking in extmou thread, i.e. thread You've linked in here.

Re: Thread for problems getting USB hostmode working.

Hi trisha02,
some suggestions:

1.) Try different speeds in h-e-n (High, Full, and Low)
2.) Try using a powered hub between N900 and mouse (for the hub, the speed in h-e-n should normally be High speed)
3.) Try a different mouse

If none of these works, I am out of ideas.

Re: Thread for problems getting USB hostmode working.

I have a davicom chipped Crystal Blue super cheap USB wired ethernet adapter that I can almost get working on my N900. I have in the past installed some scripts to try to get this working but the USB port was broken so I wasn't able to get anything working.
Now with a new USB port I have read/write on flash drives, I can use USB keyboards, I also can get the Crystal Blue ethernet adapter to light up and an interface called WIRED appears in my Internet connections options and automatically attempts to give my programs Internet access unsuccessfully.
The driver seems to be available for the Davicom, but none loads and then obviously no interface appears in ifconfig.
I am having trouble finding definite info other than the os2008 stuff which obviously will not work with a N900.
I run /usr/sbin/usbEthUp.sh and it says that /lib/modules/2.6.28.10-power47/usb2net/modlist is not present
Is there a USB ethernet adapters faq like they did for os2008 that I am missing?
I know the davicom chip is flaky but this adapter successfully connects when used with my laptop.
tried sudo modprobe usbnet, no love at all.
I am sure I am missing something stupid and this is a few keystrokes away for someone who actually knows what is going on.
I also looked at http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1002480 and didn't see anything useful, again perhaps overlooking the obvious.

Re: Thread for problems getting USB hostmode working.

trisha02, please paste here you dmesg out AFTER You're finished with unsuccessful attempt to connect mouse. You will find dmesg output using HEN application menu (upper part of screen, blue arrow near name of HEN, when You're "inside" program). Remember that You must open it after all steps (speed select, vboost on, enumerate - mount isn't needed here, cause it's not storage medium), or it won't contain necessary data for us to debug.

That's the "technical" data we need - few people get their (other) problems solved providing us that correct info, so it's worth to always provide as much technical/debug data as You can.

@biketool
Answered You on NIC thread, ho ever i don't know if that prove helpful.

vetsin, I never ever encountered conflict between HEN and fCam. so please, don't spread FUD. Actually, few minutes ago i was taking photos to my "mugen cover with lens cover" mod tutorial, saving it to pendrive without any middle-steps. The only so called ''conflict'' between fCam-whatever i have heard is with kp47, and it's also FUD, cause solution is simple - reinstall (or purge - install again) fCam drivers after upgrading to kp47.

Still, this do not belongs to HEN thread, neither got ANYTHING in common with getting USB peripherals to work with HEN.

I think I'm asking a legitimate question here as I'm one of the unlucky few who experienced the bug mentioned ny MAG.

Bugs not related to host mode, but kernel-power (see relevant threads, we don't have to do with these issues):
fcam-drivers doesn't work on certain devices for some reason, please see kernel-power's thread, quick fix: uninstall fcam-drivers.

I hope someone could at least tell (link) me where to look. Thanks.

edit: I forgot to mention I didn't do any tinkering with power kernel when it happened to me. My phone was just two weeks old when it all happened.

I think it's clear enough that this is NOT related ;) Nevertheless, don't take my answer as offensive. It's nice that You performed some searching before asking, even that you parsed them quite opposite than MAG wanted (he posted it because it's NOT topic to discuss here, as it's not related to HEN).

Anyway, you will find your answer in kernel-power v47 topic - actually i provided it to You in my last post, I'll repeat:

Uninstall - purge fCam drivers and all applications related (BlessN900?), then install it again. If you still got problems, ask in kp47 thread.

vetsin 2011-06-24 16:43

Re: Thread for problems getting USB hostmode working.

It wasn't kp47 either... I don't suppose a brand new N900 came with that kernel right? :)
Maybe it was something else... Maybe I'll just try installing it again one of these days... I'm pretty happy with my phone right now, don't want to do a reflash at the moment. Thanks anyway!

Estel, thanks for clearing things up for me! h-e-n's now A-OK. :)

Re: Thread for problems getting USB hostmode working.

Hey guys.. I am new to this forum. I purchased my N900 recently and am honestly loving it. I installed H-E-N on my N900, but sadly none of my devices are getting mounted. Even when I try to mount using the terminal after enabling root, it returns with an error. Please help me out guys.
Oh...and yeah, I am using Titan's power kernel 46 and I have multiboot installed, so I have both my default kernel and the powerkernel installed on my device. Could it be the default kernel somehow interfering with the powerkernel so I am not getting the devices to be mounted? I do see the light getting turned on on my usb devices when I enable VBUS boost on my phone, but when I Enumerate and mount, it does not mount my devices...
An early reply would be very very much appreciated...
Btw I have tried all USB devices like mice, keyboards, flash drives, card readers etc but no luck.... Help me out guys....

Thanks for finding correct thread :)

it seems that your disk is connected and recognized properly. Maybe You're trying to do everything little too fast? Don't click "mount" just 0,5 second after enumerating. wait 3-4 seconds, then try it.

Also, post here please how You try to mount it manually from xterm (as a root, of course?), and what output You receive.

And, don't worry. You will get it working - it's recognized properly, so it's only matter of some small mistake, I'm 100% sure about that :)

I am pretty sure that I used the following code...

sudo gainroot
mkdir -p /media/sda
mount /dev/sda /media/sda

Is something wrong with the code??? And also, it appears to me that the Kernel messages seem to have changed.....

@Estel: dude, if you want, I can post the hostmode.txt file again over here?!? Should I post it here for you?
