it seems running fastsms for a second fixes this problem

That still doesn't work for me unfortunately.

Let me get something clear first. You need fastsms in order for fastsmsevo to work correct?

I tried to open the vkb while texting, but it does not work. I haven't tried it with Notes yet.

Yeah you need fastsms in order to it to work.

Well try another application like Notes/Web/Calendar. Something other then conversations and always try to open it in landscape first :)

Does FastSMS work for you?

Try removing both FastSMS and FastSMSEvo using purge?

Code:

root
apt-get purge fastsms fastsmsevo
apt-get clean
apt-get purge
apt-get clean
reboot

Once your N900 has rebooted, reinstall both FastSMS and FastSMSEvo

Code:

root
apt-get install fastsms fastsmsevo
apt-get clean
reboot

Once your N900 has rebooted open up Conversations application IN LANDSCAPE and try to call FastSMSEvo by clicking on the text area.

Let me know if it works now :)

Don't forget to remind people to reboot or restart hildon-input-method for the changes to take effect, if I remember correctly.

Yeah I have put reboot commands into the code sections :)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

I'm definitely returned(finished my exams) :)

So...for people that noticed problem with the opening of fastsms: try to start (ONLY the firrst time after a reboot) from icon. then DONT CLOSE but use the button to return to application manager and then try to use message web, or what you want....
The first time, when fastsms is not still loaded in memory, every tap in text field cause fastsms to restart the load from start and it don't works well in portrait conversation (I'm talking only at first boot).

Second point: I have found an easy way to manage non latin-layout for qwerty...What I need is a text file with the four character for each key in this order:
Normal, shift on, '123' layout on, ' ' ' layout on, '123' + shift, ' ' ' + shift

For example, for the actual keyboard (for the first key):
q Q 1 å § Å
second key is the one with 'w' and so on...

NB: please use UTF-16

I will answer to other message very soon...thank you to you all!

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

I've said this in the FastSMS-thread but I'm saying it again : please implement the Opera-styled hover for keys, if you can. And, as mentioned in the thread, allowing to customize the layout will be a killer-feature. I find it hard to use the layout in FastSMS (Fin/Swe that is) since the ÄÖÅ are hidden instead of always visible.

I will be very happy to add a layout more usable for Fin/Swe languages...read my post before to understand what I need: this is very easy to do :)
I don't think to add an option to custom-modify the layout at this moment due to two reasons:
- There are other features/bugs to fix before
- Bring non latin layout also to non skilled-user (hope you can understand what I mean)

I like Opera kb a lot and also the hover effect, and I will check if it is feasible...

Is it possible after writing the text we can click a button say 'Done' or something to minimise the keboard instead of clicking on the vacant area on the top, something like Opera VBK

Thanks for the this VKB.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

Would it be possible to program a button so that when in the web browser, that button would appear on the keyboard and pressing it would then close the keyboard and then press enter?

ie. When entering a URL or a searching via google?

Not all websites have finger friendly "go" buttons so this feature would make web browsing in portrait easier :)

Just type an Enter (it's right next to the space bar in the vkb) in the text box you're entering the text into. Most of the time it registers it exactly like it would a normal hardware keyboard Enter key press.

Most of the time but the thing is, the way I suggested would reduce the need for me to press enter, and then close the keyboard myself ect.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

Add the option to display the keyboard using a gesture, for example from the proximity sensor to start the gesture would facilitate use in applications that use the keyboard but do not have a text field to activate the virtual keyboard. An example is the contacts application.

How do I write an application "Terminal X" a command to detect the "enter" key without opening the physical keyboard?

hey, realsportcars, i am making right now a layout for a russian language, and have so a few questions: Can you make for russian layout another numbers of buttons. It's so right now:
10 in a first row
9 in a second
and only 7 in a third one
i know i can use those two in a 4th row, but is it possible to have a different number of buttons for diferent layouts?
and one more: I am doing it in a wordpad, is it OKAY? i don't really know how to transfer all data in UTF-16...

I'd rather have the extra key room than that spare button.

That said, I think some of the stuff being suggested would force recoding hildon-input-method itself, instead of being implementable from the plugin itself.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

i installed this yesterday with the latest version of fastsms. It works well, and once loaded once it loads almost immediately. My only problem is that if i don't use it for a while, like i didn't use it overnight, it takes a long time to open the keyboard again. Is this normal?

Edit: also, using this outside when it's sunny is next to impossible because it's black. Any chance the keys can be changed to be grey or another light colour? I love the app, but i only need a portrait KB when i'm out, so if that's the only time i can't use it this becomes useless for me.

richwhite 2011-03-24 04:31

Re: [ANNOUNCE] FastSMSEvo: system virtual keyboard T9/Qwerty

Ok another observation is that sometimes the vkb opens all by itself. i just unlocked the device and the keyboard was open, above app manager, so it's not like i had notes or something that uses the keyboard open.

I've also encountered the bug, that causes the application to start with a lag, even if the said application had been launched earlier on.

I doubt i'm the ONLY one, more likely the only one who has commented on it. Plenty of people use the devel repo and not the forum, or don't know the thread, or just uninstall devel apps when they have a problem and wait for it to hit extras.
I'll do your uninstall/reinstall method, but as this is currently in development and testing, any problem should be examined. I may be the only one with the problem now, but when it hits more phones after promotion it may become quite widespread (i've had a few problematic apps from extras where apps weren't tested thoroughly enough)

Edit: apt-get purge FastSMS FastSMSEvo returned
reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package FastSMS

*Facepalm* ... *So much facepalm* This if what happens when you don't read what is said in detail and/or don't try the steps all the way through.

AFTER it moves the cursor to the next line and then you click OUT of the vkb to have your text committed to the text box you're typing into, the text box receives all the text including the new-line you got from the enter key and - on most websites - it interprets this vkb-committed new line the same way it would an enter key press from the hkb.

ok yeah that removed it. i'm going to leave it removed for the time being and see if it has anything to do with the 'operation temporarily disabled due to low memory' problem i've been having lately.

Hmm I havent had that error on my N900 yet but maybe you should just do a backup and reflash your N900? :)

Might be a good idea and then when reinstalling from your backup you can remove some of them apps that take up space that you don't really need?

Ordinarily i would, but it's a new (secondhand) device that i got 2 weeks ago, i flashed to 1.3 and the emmc had nothing on it anyway. So as it's so recently flashed i don't know it's necessary, plus it took AGES to get setup again. It's been doing it a lot lately though, i thought it was TwimGo but it does it even if i haven't opened the app since a reboot. Now i think it might be modest...

Have you got Faster Application Manager installed?

If so open it and it tells you at the bottom how much space you have free in your Rootfs :)

I use a QBW for that, it's at 69% full
(since removing fastsmsevo, so far it hasn't happened. it did happen before i installed it but apparently only after twimgo, with its memory leak)

Edit: phone was in my pocket, doing nothing, now it's beeping away with the memory notification. so it's not fastsms

Use Htop from the repo's and have a look at what is draining all your memory :)

You run it from X-Terminal by typing htop
