I've heard Android apps are known to ask a lot of permissions for sending data (to Google) to work. Is there any way to prevent this?
Are here people using cyanogemod and does that care more about your privacy?

Why? I want to upgrade to Galaxy Note by the end of this month.

What exactly happened after you paired? Did it show the mouse/ keyboard/presentation options?

Please note that you can't use the hardware KB in bluemaemo, it's an onscreen one. You can also use the hardware KB and the screen as a trackpad but you have to fix keyboard focus (let me know if you want to do this and I'll help you set it up).

Yes got them to pair and the options appear. mouse, keypard, presentation etc. Tried moving the mouse around and typing both onscreen and on the hwkb but nothing happened, so have been assuming it's because I don't have ICS. What is supposed to happen? Maybe I'm just missing something really obvious. Do I have to press any other buttons either in android or maemo to get it to accept commands or something?

If I get it to work then I would be very interested in using the hwkb and the screen as a mousepad thing.

not sure then, sorry. You don't have to press anything special, a mouse pointer just appears when I use the bluemaemo trackpad paired with the Galaxy Nexus. Assumed it would be the same. Have you tried launching bluemaemo from a terminal to see if it throws any errors?

Maybe rcolistete can help with Android 3.2.1 settings, or maybe it's device specific?

I don't think it has to do with ICS in particular. I might have mentioned this before in this thread but I bought a small bluetooth keyboard (about the same length as GN but a little less wide) called magic pro and it works great with the Galaxy Note. This device also has a small touch pad that allows me to control a cursor on the Galaxy Note screen such that I can actually open applications via double tapping. Unfortunately no pinch and zoom on the touch pad...

On Nokia N810 the hardware keyboard works in BlueMaemo.

On Nokia N900 & BlueMaemo, I have no success using the hardware keyboard, just the virtual keyboard.

Could you give the instructions to fix keyboard focus in BlueMaemo on N900 ?

With BlueMaemo @ N810 the Asus Transformer (Android 3.2.1) works very well. With BlueMaemo @ N900, the hardware keyboard doesn't work.

To pair N900 & Android, BlueMaemo should be open and waiting for connection. So if N900 is already paired, remove the pairing and do it again.

Re: Samsung Galaxy Note

Just been having another quick try, and attempting waiting for connection before pairing. Getting some strange behaviour. The nokia n900 appeared as a little mouse and keyboard icon instead of a phone icon. There is just the options to connect or unpair mostly. At one point on the note there was an option in there for more options and there was a tick box which said connect as a bluetooth HID device or words to that effect. It wouldn't turn on though and when I went back out those options were gone again. IT looks like it's trying to work somewhere but just not quite getting there. Since trying this the n900 will not stay connected for long and will be disconnected after about 60 seconds. I don't think it's really connected anyway as no mouse appears and the keyboard doesn't do anything either. I will keep trying things to see if it's just something really stupid I'm doing ( very possible:) ).
It looks like it is still possible that the n900 and the Note on Gingerbread might not be compatible.

edit: got the option back. this time, after removing pairing, I started via xterm. On there it's just a constant "waiting for connection..."
same in the bluemaemo window. On the Note, under bluetooth devices the n900 is there. says it's paired. Long press allows connect, unpair or options. In options there is an n900 option to connect 'pair and connect to HID device' Nothing happens when I press. Also there is profiles HID device. Use for HID device, which is already ticked. trying to connect from the Note doesn't seem to do anything in bluemaemo. Oh well. Will keep trying and if I come up with anything I will report back.

The easiest method (although it takes time to initially install) is to install Easy Debian. Then in a terminal (while bluemaemo is open in the background) do

Code:

fixkbdfocus bluemaemo
then it should start working. The symbols are not mapped correctly but typing most things works.

You can even create a bluemaemo shortcut which does this step automatically.

I'm guessing you previously tried pairing the other way? So, deleting the Note from your N900, turning bluetooth on on the Note and connecting via the N900 in bluemaemo (not outside it), what happened in that case? Is that the scenario where it just didn't respond?

Thanks a lot, it works ! I already have Easy Debian. Now I can choose to use my N810 or N900 as keyboard & mouse for the Asus Transformer.

I cited your solution in Introducing BlueMaemo topic.

That method wont even connect at all. The n900 sees the note but just wont connect to it or anything. I have to scan for devices on the note before anything at all will happen. I've just tried exiting from the 'waiting for connection screen' and connected after the pairing happened and it LOOKS like it should be working but there's no mouse pointer and nothing happens on the keyboard. Same thing as before with the options on the bluetooth devices. There is the 'pair and connect to HID devices' but it will not allow itself to be ticked.

I can only hope that when the ICS update happens it might work then.

For all whom tried or didn't try the samsung galaxy note :

Are you sure that it's screen is capacitive? If it is capacitive then why didn't they state that at the official samsung website? and if capacitive then how does the pen works on it?

When you press the galaxy note's screen does it press down like the nokia n900 resistive screen or is it solid hard like capacitive screens?

Yes, it's capacitive but it has a Wacom active digitizer layer with pressure sensitivity. The screen does not press down like the N900. For a simple explanation of touchscreen displays:

I kind of didn't beleive that this phone is capacitive...

It feels 100% identical to how an iPhone or any other capacitive glass touch screen feels like. There is no gel/plastic feel to the front glass what-so-ever. So yeah, it's 100% glass screen.

How did you manage to load Grooveshark from native browser? It leads me directly to the mobile website and I'm unable to find the desktop option as in Opera.

I hadn't used GS for a while. Just tried and it doesn't give access to the full desktop site any more, it forces you down the mobile app route. However if you go to http://www.html5.grooveshark.com in the native browser you can still get access to non-crippled track playback (for now at least). HTH.

I've found an app that allows to force rotate any application, including the Touchwiz launcher and several video streaming apps that insisted to work in landscape mode only counterclockwise.

Now I can operate my Note even upside-down. Why, you ask? Well, in an Iphon-esque way, the antenna is on the bottom side, near the buttons, and when I'm in an area with low signal, my hand interferes with it and 3g stops working. When upside-down antenna goes far from hand and data flow gets unhindered and faster!

The app is https://market.android.com/details?id=nl.fameit.rotate

I think they put the antenna at the bottom on almost all phones, to reduce its SAR rating. It's better near the jaw than near your brain during a call. It would be quite nice if it were possible to include 2 antenna which switch depending on the status of the proximity sensor.

It's here as prior art, so don't even think about it Apple.

I been thinking of the same thing. Im limited to 3G speeds (not even 3.5G, let alone LTE) and placing the phone upside-down works.

Only problem I see is Android lets you have 2 (out of 4 possible) configurations:
-Portrait (with antenna on bottom)
-Landscape (with antenna on right)

Most apps only rotate between the portrait and landscape and not the inverse-landscape or inverse-portrait (upside-down)...in contrast to the iPad. There's no technical problem, its just annoying. Even worse is that the TouchWizz launcher works great out of the box, but there's no option to make it landscape...its stuck in portrait (unless rooted/have the force rotation app)

Just use the app I cited two posts above and you get free rotation, even upside-down, for every app, including the touch wiz launcher.
I'm writing this with phone upside-down, and I get good data connection even in a difficult spot!

Re: Samsung Galaxy Note

Except for some scaling issues with widgets, rotation works nice. Indeed, sometimes the touchwiz layout looks better in landscape. Thanks for the heads up!

I just updated Stickit for my Note and it is significantly improved. It responds much more smoothly and gives you more control over the size of window you make. More importantly you have the option to play music video without the screen. You have to sacrifice multiview when you do that but usually I want to do something different in parallel like, browse, edit file, read mail and so forth so not a big deal as it is nice to have the video screen out of view at times. Warning, it can still be a little buggy but its definately better. This group also offers another very nice app (called OverSkreen) that allows you to set up several browsers on the screen. I just tried it today and it seems to work well. I opened three windows on the screen that can be moved around easily and operate independently. Then with those windows open one can fire up another app like angry birds or what ever. Of course, even with the Note's relatively large screen it can become cluttered pretty fast. But, what I think could potentially be more important, if you can display the Galaxy Note, via HDMI adaptor, on a larger screen and pair it with a bluetooth keyboard, you have a desktop environment with some multitasking capability.

Anyways, once I upgrade to ICS, root the Note and add ubuntu or some linux flavor I will have a nice set up that should be quite useful. As always, just need more ram and a faster processor!

It has ssh, equivalents to backup menu (you must get it rooted then get Titanium Backup which stores all userland apps and data, or Nandroid backup which saves every partition), plus you don't need h-e-n because it has native usb otg support. Then you have xterminals, and also vnc viewers.
About smscon, evil alarm and emulators, dunno (not my cups of tea).
You can root following online guides.
Multitasking is really a matter of task switching in Android; apps can work or stall in background according to how they are programmed. Apps are also silently closed when memory they occupy has to be reclaimed. I'm using Ram Manager to get more mem for multitasking, and indeed the Note has plenty.

Maybe because I have installed the rotation app described by debranardis, a few posts up, I can get OnSkreen to launch in landscape (I'm using touch wiz).

To all Samsung galaxy note users, something that I didn't like in the n900 is that it has limited 2gb of memory for apps. But,I read that the Samsung galaxy note also has 2gb for applications!

Is this true that there is only 2gb for apps in the Samsung galaxy note? Because 2gb won't be enough for me especially that I am a heavy down-loader.

My second question is that if this is true, then is there a way to increase this memory to more than 2gb of memory for apps?

Cheers!

Screen size is only a drawback if you like smaller screens. For me and most other Note owners, I can't ever imagine going back to a smaller screen sized phone now that I'm so used to Note's 5.3" AMOLED. (also, I can't go back to LCD after using AMOLED)

Maybe you should wait for the next greatest thing which may be the SGS3. I can only expect Samsung to go all out to ensure it's the best in the market when it's out.

!

It's not an important limit. First, because the majority of applications (except action games and some reference books) are quite tiny. Second, because you can transfer big application to your external sd card.

However, so far in Gingerbread the Note has a bug that if you move too many applications to SD, it starts bootlooping and you are forced to boot the device without external sdcard, delete the apps, and reinstall them in internal memory.

Role of thumb which gave me zero problems is moving to sdcard only applications which are not meant to startup at boot and run in background. So, huge games and reference books are fine, system apps are a no-no.

Yes.
