Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

I've been rating the spam threads "Terrible". I will continue to do that to indicate I've reported a spam thread. I feel that doing this rather than posting a message saying "I reported this" will ease congestion and stop the spam thread from going to the top of the list each time I report one. Do we want to make this a standard symbol of being reported? Since the spammers are also rating the threads any rating less than Excellent would indicate it had been reported. Just a thought. I also add a tag with spam in it to indicate it has been reported.

I have reported his blogspot-landing site to google. May help if more people do that.

Go here:
http://www.google.com/support/blogge...type=spam&rd=1

Enter nfl-for-you.blogspot.com

Perhaps his other sites could be targeted as well?

Kudos to the mods for wiping another bazillion spams from our forum!

How can you say that? they are getting reported and exterminated by our resident darlek Texrat, he is doing a great job !.

@Tex

just a quick question, do we need to report all spam by one author or is reporting just one of that authors posts good enough for the moderators?

All it takes is one. It's broadcast to all moderators. I like the idea of the reporter notifying other members in the thread but Reggie and others disagree.

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

For a popular forum like this, we should have more moderators (in more timezones) to fight this spam. There needs to be more of us that there are of them. I'm willing to be a spam-busting (only) moderator. Who else volunteers?

I think we need better automatic spam protection, not more man-power moderator fighting with automatic spam bots.

I think we need both. Making more moderators is relatively quicker and easier than installing more anti-spam measures so might be good for a quick fix. Of course, it's up to Reggie.

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

Filing a complaint against the landing page seems to have fixed it at least temporarily. It doesn't scale well, but it is definitely much better than expecting Texrat, Reggie and other mods to hand clean the spam.

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

As noted by another member, this is going to happen every weekend through the NFL season. Maybe we should consider disabling new account creation based on that time schedule?

I also like the banning/blocking of links to a specified site. If they can't post about or link to their site, there's little point of them posting anything at all. As noted, there's a plug-in that already does this...

For the benefit of all, can you please post a URL link so that we can ALL participate like the last time?

Well, there is that, yes.. but I meant also including a link to the complaint form for immediate convenience so that we can literally just click on it, cut/paste that spammer's URL and BAM! Done! As an example, see the one that killed the last spammer...

So, in this case, I'll do it as a matter of convenience here--seeing as how you already provided the URL to report... and don't bother to write out the html and dots--just puts the dots in...

Go here:

Enter allsportsonlinehere.blogspot.com

Let's do it, folks!

Done. I just hopes it's at least as easy as creating a new blogspot spam site.

Looks like.

The idea somebody posted a few pages back, to star rate (or tag) the threads as rubbish as a notifier to other users is great. It doesn't bump the thread and it saves 60 precious seconds.

Another spam user: peritekh.

I have an idea: first 10 posts of new users are peer-reviewed by >=100 post TMO users before being shown publicly.

An "audition" of sorts.

Last couple of days the spam has been only in the Games topic.

I think notifying other members in the thread can essentially double (or more) the amount of spam, since it brings the thread back up to the active topic and may incite other replies from other members that keep those unwanted topics afloat.

IMO the above suggestion to rate the reported threads with 1 star (thus lowering the thread's rating from the default 3 stars) is a good idea.

It may even be used as a parameter to automate spam filter (If new thread is ranked <3 stars AND member's post <50 posts, then hide or mark the post for moderation).

abill_uk 2011-09-28 04:55

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

One resident moderator on a rota shift will keep all of the spam away from this forum providing they have access to all threads.

That with some of us reporting the spam will work but i am all for an automatic system of any kind that does the job too.

What you do is appreciated, but it's not really your job anyway.

This spam problem is getting ridiculous. Will the people getting paid to maintain talk.maemo.org tell us what they are doing/planning to do about this?
