Just that all the packaging info resides in the specfile, meaning you don't have to reprocess the package every time you make a change and wrangle with a dozen of different files makes creation of new packages or repackaging of existing ones much easier. :)

Also the Mer/Nemo packager, called zypper seems to be quite advanced. For example, it can be used to add new repositories (zypper ar) directly from the command line, which I think apt-get is not able to do. This is quite handy for adding some of the many interesting COBS repos.

Sorry for continuing the OT, but the only thing I want is autoremove. I don't know if zypper got that, but it didn't have it in earlier meego days so in reality there was no way to unistall something after you tried it unless it doesn't pull any dependencies (which is rare in linux). Especially on limited hardware such as a phone I don't want all this junk laying around.

They support more than four apps running at a time. Watch the interview with Mark Dillon.

What do you need a back button for when you have back swipe gesture?

As more info and demos appear I'm becoming a little more impressed by the day.
As it's just an O/S at present, I'm wondering how many manufacturers are looking at the possibility of adding it to their catalogues.
But there's a frustrating side to my excitement too...... Summer 2013 (if everything goes smoothly) for the first device to hit the shelves?
Hoping my N900 can keep going 'til then. I've been lucky so far that everything has remained intact and functional and I'm already wet nursing it like it's a sick pup.

Sounds like these guys have really high productivity. Why didn't Nokia hire them?

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

Nokia couldn't move like this even if you pulled the same team right in to nokia. Nokia have/had too much overhead to mess up agility completely.

Either way, I think the key for Jolla success lies in how well it handles android apps. It doesn't really matter if the ui is top notch, if these android apps Dosent deliver native experience they don't get the needed mass invasion of free android users. That's the key to success!

Jolla says they won't support the N9/50/00 directly. But nothing will prevent the community to port it.
So, who will do it?

Now the system is optimised for 9 applications, you can open as many as you want though this might make interacting with the a bit harder. (Icons get smaller and smaller)

There is a back button in fact. When you click the dots that show in which depth you are (top left corner) you go back one level. Handy when the current view implements swipe in both ways (image gallery view). Or you can swipe the titlebar

Yes, but you can't use/see (apps 5-9) them before you close some of those running apps (1-4 which you can see).

Um, Marc said that it is currently optimized for 9 apps running on the "home" screen and that they are working on ways to make interacting with more easier.

How about, when you have over scaled or zoomed pictures and you try to move your screen to full left or right, so you can see whole picture, but it jumps "back".. I think N9 mail showing how pad it can work. If you zoom or you have too big page from mail software. Try to move left or right side of the screen. it always jumps to next or back post..

I think for 99% of the people showing more than 4 apps is useless, at least when the browser has tabs. Its important that they continue to run in the background though, so you can quickly "launch" them by icon.

The animations when swiping and opening apps are sooooo weird. They should definitely work on that. Also I hope they can present a real app next time :).

Yes but that Finnish version of "UI demo video" he give much more info! You can't do anything (see or use, even they run from backround) apps 5-9, before you close some of 1-4.

agree, email app is broken on n9. But still I think it can be fixed without stupid backbutton using swipe in a different way. Maybe swipe on toparea to jump to next/prev and swipe contentarea to swipe in message....

thing is its a bit of a let down, sure its nice and all, and well done to them to throw something together in such little time, but when they said a customizable user experience i was thinking N900 style or something similiar, the only thing they've shown us is that your gallery pictures can be set as the background...

I don't think he said anything like that in the video. And I'm pretty sure I saw one video where it shortly showed more than 4 applications. In that case the "cards" were scaled to fit in one page.

So based on all the information I've read and seen, I believe currently 9 applications are the maximum shown.

Harmattan (N9) was way late. Same with BB10..we've yet to see it.
Same with Sailfish...

damn.. in the meantime... Android becomes more popular by the day and Symbian is shrinking.

bad era to be a google "hater" & a smartphone enthusiast.

N9 Harmattan wasn't late, it was just killed off prematurely by Elop himself (even if N9 sells better than Lumia, we won't go back to MeeGo strategy). N9 based on its reception would have sold very well if marketed like the Lumias and sold in heavy hitter markets, gather lots of people's attention toward Harmattan, have increased app development, etc. After half a year, Nokia should have packaged Harmattan in the 920 shell with all its current features and it would have been golden in the Android/iOS era.

Props to Flop for the effort in collapsing Nokia, though.

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

Just to clear things up about how many apps can be opened in the home screen watch below:
Jolla Answers Your Sailfish Questions

Summary:
Quote:

-Apps can be closed long press and then close
-At this point UI is optimised to work with 9 apps open but their looking into an alternative to expand on that
-You can come back to home screen from any direction(each of 4 edges)
-No landscape mode for the launcher at the moment
Designs are still work in progress and improving!

Of course it was late. It should have been launched by 2010 (in the form on the N950). If you remember the story.

It's a miracle that Nokia released it of course. With no love at all that is, agreed on that.
Nokia indeed did not care much for the N9 after its release and didn't care a lot before it either.

 Sorry, but believe is not a option right here.. watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtEbOGuxuig 3:10 - 4:26. It is very straight. Show me video, which one have more than 4 apps running on home screen... Then i believe too.

Maybe it's something that like this?:

Meego harmattan is 99% Maemo. Or.. Could i say -41% Maemo :D (stripped).

Sailfish is the real Meego.. If it's not capable of make just a bad *** multitasking which the Maemo can??

HELLASISGREECE 2012-11-24 17:55

Re: Jolla Sailfish Is stunning! Now on video!

No, the ""real"" Meego is NemoOS. The continuation of Meego CE

Harmattan & Sailfish are Nokia's and Jolla's OSes based on the Meego core. Think of it as "meego flavors"

Maemo is Maemo and has its own "flavors". Diablo, Fremantle etc
