Thanks for suggestions concerning reboots. Battery sits firmly on its place. I don't think the problem is with the hw, because I didn't have this problem before 'stable' update.Yesterday device turned off 3 three times when talking on the phone. I removed battery and waited 10 secs before inserting it back. Wlan was disabled.
This is getting ridiculous.

Mines upped from a few times a day to constantly, there is a tiny little bit of looseness in the battery, but am unsure if this is making a massive difference

Did you try to remove the battery 10 minutes? This solved (partially) the problems for me.

My problems appeared about 2 weeks before the last update: suddenly, I had several reboots/switch off per day. The SW update didn’t change anything. Then, I removed the battery 10 minutes (maybe something to do with capacitor discharge), I now can live one week before the next reboot/switch off.

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

I had frequent reboots, and I 'appeared' (who knows if it was this) to fix it by re-authenticating my Google account, which was no longer valid. I think it was a combination of wifi/network dropout and XMPP trying to connect to Google Talk with expired authentication. I didn't realise my Google Account wasn't working until I looked in the settings.

I also thought "My battery is more than tight and snugly sitting.", but after inserting a piece of paper(which was quite hard, as the battery sits really tight!) I haven't had a single reboot or shutdown. That is around 2 weeks ago/
Actually prior to do that I removed the battery for 10 minutes. I also thought "What sense does it make removing it for 10 minutes and not for 30 seconds?", but I was advised by Carsten Munk(@stskeeps) of Jolla, that it is really needed. And since then - not a single issue. Of course - it can happen every moment :)
So even if it looks stupid - try it. And share experience here :)

Why is the newer the phone the worse the phone call experience?
Symbian was great for calling. Belle was even better. Than I bought N9, great phone but weak vibrator, quiet speakers, the worst gsm reception I've seen.
Now Jolla, good vibrator, good reception, good speakers but suddenly it just stops vibrating and giving any sound notification that somebody is calling. And it's not the first time it happened, I just didn't know about this before and I thought I had been deaf or something.
Reboot fixed this but come on, it's a phone, why does ACL works better than calling?

:) :) Are you kidding? Symbian devices were designed to be phones -- sure, they could do a few other things, but they were meant first and foremost to be used to place and receive calls. But most "smartphones" are all about consuming media, playing games, and running random and sundry apps. Actual usage as a phone is only of secondary importance. :)

Anyone having problems with wifi connections?

After last update I can connect to a network, but if the connection is lost, phone will not find any networks.

Sometimes toggling wifi off/on is enough to find the networks, sometimes it requires booting.

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

@m4r0v3r
I do not see other solution than new, slightly bigger battery. But that is an overkill for a company of Jolla's scale. Hopefully they will not do same HW design mistakes in Jolla 2.0:
- battery not making good contact
- speaker placed on the wrong side of the chassis, so being covered by the hand when in landscape.
- SIM card tray not well designed, so SIM gets disconnected
- edges too sharp to hold the device comfortably

@Heik
I haven't experienced such problems.

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

i actually like the edges the way it is. those rounded edges like on the samsung galaxy makes the phone look ugly. :)

i don't hold my phone that tightly till it the edges dig into the flesh and make it hurt.

to each his / her own i suppose.

The edges make it very good to hold, IMO. With rounded edges, it would feel more slippery.

mikecomputing 2014-04-15 16:41

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

talk about slippery, I changed from my lastucase back to red puppy and realized its more slippery than lastu.

However I dislike the fact that Jolla does not make money on Lastucases sold because lastu don't ship with a jolla case. I think they should.

Running Update 5. Battery life good, getting a couple of days. Browser is just about usable, navigating sites and tabs is a pain. Loving the music player, simple to use, sound is excellent and navigating my collection is beautifully intuitive. I've lucked into a great mobile / headphone combo with a set of AKG450s. Anyone who has listened to playback has been very very impressed. Best thing is that thereis more to come, my tunes are in mp3 format from google music, starting to convert my CDs and Vinyl collection using Flac this weekend.
Some of the native apps are fantastic, Mitäkuulu, Tweetian, Friends, Sailbox spring to mind immediately as being Tier 1 level, upnpplayer picked up my LG tv and media collection on my Win 8.1 box without any issue.
I have all the available other halves, Snow white, First one, Black and Aloe with Poppy Red on the way, have had no issues with them being recognised or problems with fit. Does mean that I expect to have a full Ambience selection screen in about 3 or 4 months.
Mapping is accurate and reasonably fast, disappointed that I do we do not yet have live directions. I would pay an extra license fee for this functionality.
With regards Android apps, I am trying to keep away from them, only 2 I have so far are Viber and Skype and both are functional.
So to sum up, i'm impressed with the development progress, the UI has won me over completely and i'm looking forward to more native apps and development of Sailfish.

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

OK, my summary:

Got my Jolla in december. My only smartphone, until that moment, was a Nokia N900.

As a phone, no problem. But I'm feeling both GSM/3G and Wi-Fi reception quality are slightly worse than N900's. Got no experimental proofs; it may be just psychological.

Silica UI and gestures are absolutely delightful. First sight love.

Stock browser is unusable for me, because of the "image-link" bug (question 23243 on togheter.jolla.com). Luckily, Webcat available. Impressed by the GPS app: about 100 times faster than N900's when loading and making "lock". A shame it doesn't offer offline maps. About media, the phone is powerful enough to play everything, but it's a step back in terms of formats supported. That XviD issue is a pain in the *ss.

Other apps are OK. I'm not a big fan of collecting thousands of them: as for now, only 32 installed. Not running "Androids" at all.

Love all those OS updates. But hate the fact that Sailfish isn't 100% free. Seems it's even less free than Maemo and... Android? Anyway, the phone is as "hackable" as the N900. But missing that Maemo "debianish" way of doing things. Sailfish seems to be in a permanent "beta" state, but that's something N900's users were used to. It's funny.

OS and apps are consuming a lot of RAM. Maemo was OK with just 256 MB and several apps running. It would be almost impossible to run Sailfish on a N900.

Seems battery is better than N900's, but doesn't matter to me. I'm always close to a charger and rarely has dropped under 50%.

Hate the on-screen keyboard, as I've always hated them. But Jolla's is highly customizable and prediction slightly relieves this pain.

Waiting for full copy&paste, 4G and usable and fast browser (Webcat suffers from some lag). XWayland and 100% free OS would be great. As for the hard, two "halves" would make it the perfect handset for me: an E-reader and a hardware keyboard.

Actually this is something that I also like a lot. Before Paarlampi update it was a lot slower but now it snaps to lock really quick, even when I usually keep the positioning OFF and only enable it when I use maps.

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

Hi everyone.
I am very interested in Jolla and Sailfish OS. I even nearly bought the phone back in december. But many month and a few updated after, I want to ask about your experience with the phone on day-to-day tasks.
I have been using the Nokia N9 for two years now, and it has proven, that there is no use for a high end "SGS5/HTC One M8/Sony Z2" phone for me. I just like the way MeeGo looks and feels. Apart from calls and SMS, I use my phone to listen to music (I really like the sound quality), to check something on the web and chat using Facebook. The third party app I use most is Sports Tracker. I don't need tons of apps and games, I just want to be sure, that the phone will not fail me on the tasks I really need.
To sum up - my scenario is around 2h of music playback, hour of web serfing some calls and texts a day.
What I like about Jolla is that it gives a chance to fill the gap with Android apps. Here I have a few questions:
Does Opera work fine?
Does Sports Tracker/Endomondo work?
Does a GoPro app work? (Maybe someone has a GoPro camera :D )
What is the overall Android performance with the latest update?

So yeah. What do you say? Is the Sailfish OS ready for a regular user?

P.S.: I have had a chance to play with a Jolla for some 5 minutes, when I was in Rovaniemi this february. It seemed smooth, and I liked the way the phone felt in my hand.

+1
Pretty much exactly my use and thoughts on Jolla so far. I will just extend on how I have been enjoying the music quality and music player. I have been using my Beyerdynamic, Denon in-ears and all of them has sounded like I would expect them to. My Lumia 920, N9, Z10 all did not manage to do that.

I also have to say that the battery life is very impressive. Before the updates it was the worse battery life I have seen in a phone and now it is the best I have had alongside iPhone 5.
I totally get why some are not installing Android apps, but for me how the apps looked and ran was the first positive surprises on the OS/phone and they have only improved this aspect.

Clear negatives for me are the browser that imo simply needs total overhaul. Connection handling has improved, but switching around WiFI, 3G is still a bit weird and connection errors do appear time to time. Stll waiting for that LTE support.

not sure if this has happened to anyone else.. but my vibrate on my jolla has either disappeared or is very weak

iv checked settings and vibrate is on for everything. even when using pulley menu there is no vibration.. only when i quickly move up and down on the pulley menu i can feel a very light vibration...

is this fixable?

iv tried turning off and on the phone.. didnt fix anything :(

i think it all happened when i decided to explain the concept of the other half to my friends, took off my white other half and re-attached it and it asked to install the theme.. i pressed cancel.. and i think i lost my vibrate since then.. :(

I tried it once, a few updates back. It did connect to the GoPro, but every few seconds the connection manager popped up, asking me to chose a network, it seemed to have some sort of problem with the GoPro Wifi. I'll have to test it again to see if it's usable now.

This seems to be common Jolla issue. Use CSDs tool to check your vibration. When switch it ON and if not working - shake the phone a bit. If t start vibrating - leave it like this for a minute or two.
Check the thread on TJC for more info: https://together.jolla.com/question/...ation-problem/

Do I understand it right that you want to remove your savings?

If yes: You need a rooted filemanager (Schturman's apps on openrepos) to have access to /data/data/com.fingersoft.hillclimb/shared_prefs/ and your progress should be in hillclimbprefs.xml.

No, I just want backup and restore it after resetting jolla, but thanks.
What I mean by moving/removing, I just tested if that location was effect to my progress and then know sure that its game save and to be taken backup.

Ok. Then you can just backup the folder shared_prefs and restore it later. Anyway you need root privilege to enter this folder as I described before. :)

Wow, you like the Media player. I think it is terrible, and it has got no better in the 5 months of updates.

The sound quality is great and the cover buttons are superb, cover art works well and lots of formats supported... but...
  • Shuffle does not get past the letter A.
Greatest hits Albums are a confused mess of multiple artists.
Album lists are by artists name and not the album name, making this a useless function.
Artists lists show number of minutes rather than the far more useful albums and songs.
Navigating long lists without a scroll bar is very frustrating
All these issues were raised in November but so far without any acknowledgement from Jolla.

John
