sorry if this have been ask before, but why are we still using 2.6.28 kernel?
what prevent N900 to use 3.2.1 (latest kernel) or even 2.6.38?

Binary blobs and cell phone software.
If you want 3.2.5, go ask the Nemo team if they can roll it in.

Any luck on the WLAN bug?

Disabling WLAN from automatically connecting doesn't help. If I go into the "Internet connection" widget from the home screen, WLAN APs are still pinged. After 2-3 days of even no WLAN use, if I go into the "Internet connection" widget the kernel panics in the same way as I have reported.

Could someone fashion a patch go catch the NULL pointer for now to at least not kernel panic?

Pali is making a new build which should fix the issue (hopefully it will be available in a couple of minutes, there will be an announcement). Would you please install it once it is ready , test and report whether the issue still remains.

* Added option (sysfs entry) to disable indicator led
* Enabled module xt_owner
* Fixed scheduling while atomic bugs
* efuse calibrations are re-calculated - using linear approximation instead of hard-coded increments
* Fixed camera driver to use framebuffer memory for video-capture buffer (DMA to framebuffer)
* Enabled cdrom drivers
* Disabled verbose power_supply messages
* Notify about changed musb mode
* Disabled mesh network (kernel sometimes crashed)
* Fixed the famous BT headset issue
* Upstream patch: Bluetooth: Fix potential bad memory access with sysfs files

I started having the same issues at work a couple weeks ago, made the report and found it was already reported.

Turns out IT had changed where some of it's wifi APs were, and my office is now in the middle of two nearly-equally low powered APs. Every time a truck passes by outside it drops the signal and potentially changes which AP it's connected to, which caused a reboot on occasion. (It took me days to figure out it was trucks/signal causing this...) I "fixed" it by removing the work AP listing entirely and just not connecting to wifi at work.

I just loaded up todays build and re-enabled the work AP. Will let you know if it reboots again in the near future. Lots of trucks are due to pass by in the next couple hours. :)

Update: Lots of trucks and wifi up/downs later, and no reboots. Will let you know if that changes, but so far, so good.

Maybe start up a new KP50 thread?
I think its time :)

Test my last pre50 build. If all problems are fixed and pre50 version can be pushed to Extras-devel as v50 I will start new thread for kernel-power.

Installed the new version, no problems sofar.

Installed these packages (in order):

thanks but how come there is a kp50 already if kp49 is not yet in Extras as in Extras not devel/testing?

v50 is not released yet.
pre50 is on above URL.
v49 is in Extras-testing and in Extras-devel.
v42 is in Extras.

I think the ask is, why not promote v49 to Extras? It seems pretty stable, and most of us have been running on it for a while. I think I know the answer: You expect K50 to be rock solid, and want to push that from devel, to testing and up to extras in one straight shot.

I'm good either way. Just wanted to clarify what the other poster is probably getting at.

Btw: Pre50 has changed over from wifi to 2G, 3G, and dual on my device dozens of times in the past 12 hours. No reboots yet. (knock on wood!) :)

Exactly :)

And we still need to modify kernel-power-settings to deal with obsoleted frequencies.

No. Battery patch does several kernel-config calls, which override the use of this file shortly after boot. You will not be able to tune your kernel while running battery-patch, as the scripts repeatedly load different configurations as a routine part of it's operation.

Personally, after a great deal of analysis of battery-patch; I'm pretty convinced that if you load KP, and configure it properly, you will get as good or better battery savings. 99% of what the battery patch scripts do is load one of three tuned kernel profiles, based on the state of the device. I'm pretty convinced that can be boiled down to one single profile, based on your usage pattern, which will give better results with less mucking about.

On the upside, battery-patch has now been fixed in that removing the package does in fact appear to revert the system to it's pre-patched state (with the exception that you must re-default your kernel-config to personal settings if you had them previously). So there's less harm in trying it out, if you don't want to bother with tuning your own profile. Speed-patch OTOH still sometimes leaves remnant changes behind, at least in the last version I analyzed. As with any constantly updating app: in the next version all bets are off, especially since the author says the next version is a major re-write of what was being done before (again).

My advice: Uninstall anything with "patch" in the title and craft your own kernel profile. It will better suit what your usage pattern is, and has less issues in the long run when it comes to updates.

previously on v42, today i updated to v49 in extras-testing. everything seems to be ok except i am unable to watch flash videos on microb. it only shows a black square for example in youtube. tried in a couple of other sites but experienced the same problem. i tried playing an flv file in kmplayer and it worked. rebooted twice but the problem still persits. what could be wrong? i am using tweakflash.

The black screen is usually a symptom of the content actually using flash 10+ features, so not visible to flash =< 9.

Just to clarify:
- how long ago did you try to view these videos before installing kp49, i.e. could the provider have changed flash version since you last visited?
- did you install anything other than kp49 itself, what about settings package etc?

What happens when you remove flash-tweak?
If msg appears "need flash10+", try reinstalling. Any improvement?

Hello,

just installed pali's latest build of KP49pre50- it runs stable here except one issue: when I try to load the bleeding edge wifi drivers I get the error-message:

Code:

Error while loading kernel modules
ifconfig: SIOCGIFFLAGS: No such device
Error while starting wlan0 interface
Drivers were not loaded

That is the only issue I had so far- the rest runs rock-stable up to 950MHz.
Thanks to all involved!

Hi! last pre50 build has some problems. I got (at least) 2 times kernel segfault and n900 rebooted.

In syslog is nothing logged, so only mtd2 log is usefull. Here is:

This is because that wifi driver is compiled against old kernel-power. For proper working each module must be compiled against actual kernel version. But there was nothing changed in wifi stack, so packet injection wifi driver worked. But now in kernel power are some changes (disabled mesh, ...) and binary wl1251 packet injection driver is incompatible with last kernel-power...

I've not had any reboots, so it looks like the wifi issue is fixed.

From the mtd2 log I'm guessing you're using the fm transmitter? Death in kmem_cache_alloc is never good, very hard to debug, since it may not have anything to do with user-land operations going on at the time. :(

I'll enable fm transmitter and see if I can cause it to duplicate, to see if it's related at all. Is there anything else you were doing at the time that caused it to reboot that you can think of?

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v49 in Extras-Testing

N900 rebooted when screen was locked and I not used it for more minutes. I only heard vibra engine and then Nokia hands video.

Last syslog output is:
Code:

Feb 17 17:04:47 Pali-Nokia-N900 fmtxd[5387]: GLIB WARNING ** default - No marshaller for signature of signal 'Condition'
Feb 17 17:04:47 Pali-Nokia-N900 fmtxd[5387]: GLIB WARNING ** default - fmtxd Could not set FM tx power level: Operation not permitted
Feb 17 17:05:48 Pali-Nokia-N900 fmtxd[5389]: GLIB WARNING ** default - No marshaller for signature of signal 'Condition'
Feb 17 17:05:48 Pali-Nokia-N900 fmtxd[5389]: GLIB WARNING ** default - fmtxd Could not set FM tx power level: Operation not permitted
Feb 17 17:06:49 Pali-Nokia-N900 fmtxd[5391]: GLIB WARNING ** default - No marshaller for signature of signal 'Condition'
Feb 17 17:06:49 Pali-Nokia-N900 fmtxd[5391]: GLIB WARNING ** default - fmtxd Could not set FM tx power level: Operation not permitted

and I not used FM transmitter.

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v49 in Extras-Testing

I created patch which do not report -EPERM when some app (e.g. fmtxd) try to change power level when fm transmitter is locked:
https://garage.maemo.org/plugins/ggi...c02b15f3f813ed

At least it could disable stupid fmtxd syslog messages...

Well, looks like I'm getting the same errors in syslog, and was under K49 as well. I had gotten random reboots under K49, but that was wifi related. Once I removed the wifi AP for work (which is the only place it happened) it stopped doing it. But in those the opps clearly pointed at the wifi driver. This one is pointing at the kmem_cache_alloc call.

One thing I find odd though, why is fmtxd running on your system at all? On my N900, the only time that runs is when FM has been enabled and it's actively transmitting audio. By default it runs at start up but goes away on it's own after a short delay. So the fact that it was even running implies to me that something was trying to activate it?

During my effort the track down battery draining programs and processes on n900 while it's idle I found out the same: the fmtxd was waking up the cpu all the time when it is not needed.
So I tried out the modified binary from here and the problem was solved- the fmtxd is now shut down completely when it is not used.

@Pali, patches 0001-mtd-fix-a-huge-latency-problem-in-the-MTD-CFI-flash-.diff and 0002-mtd-change-struct-flchip_shared-spinlock-locking-int.diff are still enabled in series file, please disable them as it is confirmed those cause reboots/slowdowns.

Also I am unable to use QtMobileHotspot with USB, device reboots in 1-2 seconds after connecting USB cable. Please anyone to test if it is working for him with latest KP. I suspect it might be USB sysfs notify patch, will disable it and will test.

EDIT:
it is not USB sysfs notify which bugs the kernel.

Running latest KP (including git updates from 2 days ago) and I'm writing this reply from laptop using USB QtMobileHotspot. No problems.

Well, seems I am hitting this. Will prepare a patch and will send it to Pali (if this solves the kernel crash)

EDIT: Bug smashed, patch sent to Pali.

But now in kernel power are some changes (disabled mesh, ...) and binary wl1251 packet injection driver is incompatible with last kernel-power...

So, someone should build them against KP50

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v49 in Extras-Testing

I have tried the latest kp pre-50 and worked no problems for me with the exception of wifi lxps driver so I went back to freemangordons pre-50 and as usual I do a autoremove & autoclean only this time after autoclean a lot of my aps with lots of lib files where deleted resulting in a mess. I could not get any updates as repositories reported errors ex: "sub-process bzip2 returned an error code (1)" and "applet not found" so I had to reflash my device. Not sure if there is a bug by reverting back to a previous KP you can lose files (being deleted) by trying to autoclean your device, can anyone else confirm the above.

I think this may be a regional thing? One would hope that such a setting wouldn't change behavior like this, but all things are possible with closed-source blobs. :(

I builded new deb packages. I disabled both patches + included that you sent me.

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v49 in Extras-Testing

Be prepared, long post of kernel-power-settings which is driving me crazy. Really kernel-power settings is gone nuts.

In this post I describe exactly what steps I took to get this result, and it's reproducable 10/10.

I already thought kernel power-settings was acting weird on me so I ran:

Code:

apt-get remove --purge kernel-power-settings
rm -r /home/user/.kernel

That last command was to be sure there were no bits left of my personal config files.

This part describes why I am posting this...
After removing kernel-power-settings, I installed kernel-power-settings again by issuing
Code:

sudo gainroot
apt-get install kernel-power-settings

Followed by loading the default config http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/...36d17c5e6g.jpg

I thought these voltages were quite weird, and yet it becomse even weirder, here the voodoo kicks in, when I recheck the config I just loaded with nano

http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/...7bab7c656g.jpg

WTF , other values in the config file than kernel-config show reports... Especially freq 500 and 600 are weird

I did not set any profile as default so why don't we reboot and let it load the original "nokia" config? Easy said easy done:

http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/...736d348d6g.jpg

Then load the default profile and check again. Seems quite normal, except still that voltage voodoo bug ( 550 and 600)

Let's make the default profile default so it loads at boot
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/...8dffdb676g.jpg

Reboot...
Checking again
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/...89ef13746g.jpg
Voltages seems normal atleast they are linear increased with frequency increasement, not the weird jumps as when loading it. Though it still makes me wonder where the vuck do these values come from as they are definitely not in the config file(see screenshot 2, the one opened in nano)

@mr_pingu: breathe man, SR is enabled and you're seeing what SR has calculated for each frequency :p
