Does anyone have a lastucase? How is the quality of that (since it is leather glued? to wood - i am not sure about the comparison to a "one pieace" leather case).

I have a Lastu Case. The build quality is fine. It looks like the leather is not directly glued onto the wood, but sewn on something to which also the wood is glued, so no worries about that part. The leather won't come off by its own.

I'm not sure, though, if the case stays closed when falling to the ground. Maybe the flap will open, if you're unlucky, and the glass will hit the ground. But I have not tried this.
Gravity is the only force that holds the flap closed.

Other than that, the Lastu Case looks great on the Jolla.

I bought the case for dirt protection, not for drop protection.

Operating N9 was possible with one hand. With jolla it is difficult due to the size.

That depends on what you mean by operating. Typing this response is impossble with one hand on a screen-only device, regardless of size.

Yes, N9 was exellent(mostly). Jollas interaction design is bad for one hand. The GUI should make it easier. not harder to use in most possible situations.

They are not? I might have missed that memo, I'm using SE Xperia ultra, 6,4 inch (and most of my other phones) with one hand mostly. But jollas UI makes it almost impossible to use with one hand.

My issue with jollas GUI is that they have buttons top left which is not user friendly if u are using it with one hand. I would like that button in the buttom instead. Also, instead of drag the whole homre screen dont to get pully menu to select things you should move it up and the menu in the button. Not sure how they thought when design the interaction design. But it cant have been with one hand in mind :D

Jolla need to fix this or add some smart moves like gesture based interaction with the GUI to open apps, close apps, go back, go forward, go to specific url's and so forth.

http://i.imgur.com/NetVTmv.jpg

Suggestions: latest apps should be possible to have in the button, menu should be visible in lower part of the screen. (this works better with lots of apps open but still). It doesn't matter when using two hands, but a big difference when using one. So then it should be an easy design decision.

This reply was typed on Jolla using just one hand. Little difficult maybe but not impossible.

Are you serious? You shouldn't use that buttons, the left/right gestures are made for these. No wonder you can't use it with one hand.

So many clicks/swips is needed on top mid screen. Why no add a feature small button (buttom). then draw any figure anywhere on screen and command was executed? that would make it awesome.

While Sailfish gui is simple and nice. Android commands can be executed much faster becouse they figure out ways to side step the standard user interfaces. Android would be very hard to use onehanded without these additions.

My hope is that they will be available for sail at some point so we can speed up the usage.

Would be possible to add something like this to sailfish so you could enable in settings/app and then execute from any screen via button click or speach?

No, you click a button from any screen, swipe a Z on screen and you are calling your contact Zorro, open an app, close all apps or what ever you have pre.configured.

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

I agree with Dave, that Jolla is currently only half way to the one hand experience.

I disagree about pulley menus - they are very one hand friendly (probably the best solution I have seen in the mobile world). The same with back/forward gesture.

The problem is that there are still lists of items to select, starting from the top of the screen. So when you need to select the first item, you are usually way out of your comfort zone. This usually happens when you open the last received email or any notification from the Events view, for that matter (!).

I cannot imagine how to fix this, though - the only way I see is to be able to pull the list items down so they don't start from the top (like it is done in BB10 menus), but it is impossible due to the presence of pulley menus.
Another way, but also quite complicated would be to introduce few items from the top of the list at its bottom (giving an impression of a infinite list), but it would mean that "push-up" menus would have to be removed.

What would make sense would be encouraging developers to dedicate top ~50% of the screen to non-interactive components (until scrolled), like images, information banners etc. Pretty much how it is done in the Friends application when you are viewing your profile.

EDIT: Now thinking of this ^^ it's not a bad idea. I'll try to implement it in the apps I'm currently developing.

As Bubbless already said, it is possible even on Jolla (even if it is not very comfortable in some situation, with a small chance to drop your phone because of the finger achrobatics required to do that; I blame the phone dimensions, it's that little too big). But even with the current dimensions, you would just need to have a slide input keyboard and voilą! Typing with one and only is not only possible, but really convenient. Oh, how I miss it from N9... when it was enabled in... what was it, PR1.2? It completely changed my experience with the device, so, so comfortable.

Regarding the rest, I strongly disagree with anybody saying Sailfish is not designed with one-handed operation in mind, imho it's totally the opposite. Event view and peek gestures, putting apps in background, accepting/refusing actions, accessing the pulley menu... aside from some small quirks while catching the input desired from the user (especially with the pulley menu) all of these can be easily performed with one hand. The only gesture difficult to perform in one handed operation (and it was so also on the N9) is the swipe-from-top to close an app / lock the device. But again, I blame the dimensions of the phone: on N9 it was a little bit more difficult to perform than the rest, but still doable; on Jolla there's the serious chance to drop the phone while stretching your hand to reach that top spot, and it is also not that comfortable. That's the only gesture I use my left hand for. That, and typing very long messages (a thing I hope can be solved soon with a slide input keyboard, but development on both open source implementations announced for Sailfish seems to be stopped. :(

EDIT: wait, the issue descibred from nodevel in the post just above mine is also true... and the proposed solution is brilliant! Please, do it! :D

I've been using my Jolla one handed this whole time, had no idea I was doing it wrong :D

Either way, if it really was impossible to use one-handed, surely Marc Dillon would have some complaints...

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

For locking, when I'm too lazy to stretch my hand to the top, I usually just flick down, enter the lock screen and wait a few seconds until the device locks itself.

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

Just a small follow up on my idea. Here's a very quick example just did in my app:
http://i58.tinypic.com/1zbdvt0.jpg

It is a custom made 'InfoHeader' component that can replace the PageHeader component. As an input, it takes the list model you are showing on the page (supports both ListModel and XmlListModel).

Items are animated -> move into its (random) place and have a random color. The big number is the number of items in the list.

It automatically hides when you switch to landcape.

Of course, this is just a placeholder for lists that have no additional valuable information - in apps like e-mail, there should be some important info about the number of e-mails/senders/etc. . I expected that it could trigger lots of "what a wasted space" comments when I release it, so it will be possible to disable from the settings. :)

EDIT:
You can get the code here.

IIRC I read on TJC that SailfishOS 2.0 should be actually ready for the phone quite soon, like not this coming update, but at the next iteration (if this time all goes well and they can fix for good the regressions introduced with Qt 5.2 upgrade).

quite soon...if you mean like in 4...6 month.

next update mid late jan, then next one in may/June. Jolla has proven that every month is not possible for them but rather every 3-4 month with new features and some mini security or for show updates in between if we are lucky. I think jolla should change it or rethink their strategy to release every month if they cant. Nothing wrong with that.

Sailfish 2.0

I want to be able to watch vids, sports, movies like in this this gif so hope they fix some support for major services or add flash support ;)

What game is that down left in the tablet? Native?

Watchmaker 2014-12-14 19:38

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

Come on, please stop with this ********. These very long "delayed update" situation is all due to unexpected difficulties in the upgrade to Qt 5.2... not to say that it was not a mistake (it was indeed a quite big underestimation of the consequences of such a big thing, i.e. something went wrong), but I expect them to return to their regular monthly updates once this crisis is over. If not, I will complain. But until then, nobody can really say if the whole "monthly update" thing is not feasible at this point. For a long time, it has been.

Qt isn't the issue anymore as far as I know but memory improvement issues...
https://together.jolla.com/question/...s-of-update10/

So sailfish moves to auto close to free memory...first step against android handling?!?! Hope they give option to user to decide on/off.

We don't live in the past. We live here and now and our memory is very short. We are the customers of today, shopping for the products of tomorrow. We appreciate products we can use today, not what we used yesterday. We are driving the business and we do not back down until we get the latest of updates. Our memory is very short so latest update is always the only important one. Nothing else matters. Our memory is short. Give it to us yesterday so we can go for sailfish 2.0 of tomorrow.

Five reasons why sail 2.0 should worry AppleGoogleMicrosoft

Low-memory handling issues are a regression caused by the move to Qt 5.2, AFAIU (but I only know what I read from people who actually know what they're talking about).

..to abandon JOLLA?

So, after one year of using Jolla as My main phone, I'm to deside to use it for one more Year or change it to something else.

Last month I was on trip in Portugal and after with motorbike to sahara for two weeks. After this weeks of, maybe more extreem usage, I found weakness of My Jolla.

Fotos are unusable (so no memories)!
Last few days Jolla restarts 10-20 times per day!
More and more I'm using an android apps(calendar, Facebook, Opera, Viber, Here maps..!

I was aspecting Jolla 2 instead of tablet so new phone won't be ther for, at least one more Year.
I can't wait so long.

Sorry Jolla but, I think this will be GOODBYE!

Did you contact Jolla Care?? This definitely calls for a warranty repair - people usually get it back in a matter of days.
I have noticed this interesting behavior of some Jolla users - if they had a Samsung and it had 10-20 restarts per day, they wouldn't wait an hour and rush to get it replaced under warranty. In case of Jolla, they often say "there is a problem, I quit" :)

Or it could simply be the ease of claiming warranty? Samsung has stores/service centres/authorized agents in almost every city making the process much more accessible than maybe shipping a package back to Jolla and hoping the costs are feasible...

Yes I do know the apples vs oranges argument but its an argument against terming people as a certain mindset without understanding the full scenario.

No, it is not. before while loading a page you could see the url just above the browser bar at the bottom. If you clicked on it you could enter URL. This URL-field is now gone and you have to click tabs button in browser bar to change url :(

I mean seriously...Go to another view just to change URL
