No, I don't work for Nokia. I'm just baffled that people are going batshit insane here about a relatively minor delay done for a good reason.

It makes the customer feel like he's being served by 11 year olds. And it's not been the first time...that's the problem.

Keep what secret? And didn't I already explain why it's impossible to know the exact date when you'll have yours.

They could always announce the device only when distributors have them in stock, I guess that's what you'd want?

A company like nokia should be able to give a real release date and not hope and guess when its released.

I am not asking for date for each one off us, I would like the date when even first one of us get the device. Nokia has been shipping all the week, but I have not heard about anybody to really seen a device nor get an email telling one is on its way.

Peeps,

You got to realise what was the main issue for the delay. The main issue as far as I know was due certain Simcards that didnt work some one correct me if I'm wrong. it is quite possible that upon investigating the bug it is quite possible that they found that it may not be only resident to one operator and became a show stopper.
Hence, making sure that Maemo FW update was available delaying the shipment.

I honestly don't think the issue here was from Nokia. It was quite possible the Maemo was the issue and making a stable FW so that the phone capability was working and Nokia stressed to Maemo that this bug has to be fixed and is core to their sucessful rollout of the product. Again, someone from Maemo should correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: N900 shipping delayed

To be able to give a solid release date from every retail outlet, Nokia would have to say nothing about plans and intentions and not give a glimmer of information until everything is ready and they were almost shipping from the factory.
Then they would have to give retailers strict instructions to not sell stock until some artificial and planned release date that is suitably late to account for unpredicatble delays in shipping and importing.

In this case the initial announcement would have been about Nov 7th-8th.pf a release date of, say, Nov 27th. Many retailers would have them on the 16th but not allow anyone to buy them until Nokia's conservative release date is reached. That is how other manufacturers do it and that actually results in the device being in your hands at a later date.

Nokia's current release tactic is to get them to the retailers as quick as possible and allow them to ship them to customers as quick as possible.

What would you rather, a definate date of November 27th or the vagueness of 'as soon as your retailer gets them'?

The N900 is an open device, the pre final build announcement is a courtesy to the community to allow developers to hit the ground running without using restrictive NDAs.

It's a difficult and painful process but, in the long run results in a better device quicker at the expense of a rock-solid release date. I thank Nokia for doing it this way.

Happenned about 5 days ago :) - no answer - but on the MPD front page the N900 banner links to the nokia retail store now.

Their site redirects you to nokia retail, which is .... the same company.

I think we should make this thread more optimistic. If we always bi/tch and complain they will close it. Our device will come. I think for the Iphone people where making line up and many many people couldn't buy it first and it was still the case because people were paying increadbly high price for nothing. I got an Iphone 3gs that I didn't open and sold it on ebay for 850$ people want it so badbly and can't have it.

We will have it soon it is not a question of months now it's a question of days and week. Peter said during november and I think this time they are doing the best to respect their word. So more positiv?

I'm pretty sure the delay doesn'e have something to do with the lack of support for newer sim cards, since Nokia Sweden has postponed the release here even longer beacuse of this

according to product manager Klas Ström, the firmware update fixing the sim card bug won't be ready earliest w.49 which probably means it will be used in new phones a couple of weeks after that

or something...

I'm not interested in personalising this to what Peter should or should know but this is not Nokia's first barbecue. They release probably tens of new handsets every year so of course they should have a very good view of how it will go.

And of course they do know how it will go - the problem is they only share that information with their business partners not the consumers.

True... understood but considering this FW update. it would have need to be pass a certain stage e.g. testing before its release to be available to endusers. I sincerely believe that there was more to this than just this bug of the Simcard. So, the delay could have been a cascading issue which involve the simcard bug.

Imagine this scenario if only 40% of the world population who purchased the N900 and it did not work with their operator. That would be a major blow for Nokia and Maemo

Yes, different distribution points will receive stock at different times then different retailers will receive stock from the distribution at different times, the each retailer will have different turn-around times to ship stock off to end customers.

The only thing anyone in their position can state with any accuracy is when it leaves their factories, they cannot give a date when it leaves retailers without artificially delaying he release from all retailers.

I'm sorry but I don't think you know how businesses operate. Nokia and the retailers it ships to all talk to each other. You must surely know that when you're buying any other product other than a new Nokia device you know exactly where and when to go buy it.

This is starting to sound a lot like the original Asus Eee PC and Everex Cloudbook releases to me. I preordered one of each for what seemed like 3 or 4 delays on release dates. When I finally got my Everex Cloudbook, it was outdated already.

I buy stuff from China all the time. The guy who sends it to me knows when it will get to me to the day. He can do the same with people in other countries. I'm thinking if I'm selling zillions of phones each year, I would pretty much be able to tell you exactly how things are done, down to the day.

I would Much rather have a global (or at least nationwide) release date. Even if it's farther away it gives me something to look forward to, as opposed to checking amazon every 6 hours like I've been apt to do lately...

I've been monitoring that page as well. They don't know any more than we do (if they do they aren't showing it), they just keep pushing the ETA date back as the days pass.

Called up BLT and talked with a nice CS Rep.

I let him know about my situation and how I have a deadline to receive the N900. He let me know the ETA date listed on their site is the date that was given to them from Nokia. But from his experience with Nokia it usually takes up anywhere from a week to a month for them to actually receive devices from them. He also let me know that I wouldn't probably receive one from them before December if I ordered from them. I thanked him graciously for being truthful.

In regards to Customer Service, I have to say talking to BLT was ten times better than talking with NewEgg. He was at least willing to tell me the truth and not lead me on. Unlike NewEgg's CS who blatantly lied to me earlier in order to gain the sale.

Indeed! But in NewEgg's defense, I would say that the CS REp is a salesman, not a logistics management salesman. Yes, they use the same tactics as a guy hawking electronics on 57th St. But Newegg is so easy to deal with, I can't really fault them for this, it is what it is. If you could actually reach someone at Newegg that "knew" anything, I bet it would be a different story. We need a mole on the inside!

December? Hah!!

I ordered from newegg. I'm waiting till Monday then canceling if I don't hear anything from them. It was either this or a laptop so I guess I'm going back to the laptop plan. Oh well. :(

So they didn't say anything about MPD / Nokia having exclusive rights to sell the phone for 2 months? That takes it to Jan 2010 for everyone else if that info is correct.
