I think what is going on here can be a good case of study for an MBA. Do you wanna be successfull: Give 500 discount codes to your developers so they gracefully move from 770 to N800. Do you wanna shoot your foot: Give them 500 discount codes and do not activate them for a couple of monthes after the release of the product. No official when, no offical why. This way you have the people spending time searching why their codes don't work instead of making their projects run on the new device. And if you can advertise Canola2 for a month to then at the last minute say you are not releasing because there is an obscure ok reason, then you kill the platform totally!!! After that you simply say that linux is not ready for business. That always work. Nobody is going to get angry about the stupid situation, because we all know that if we do we are not going to have a new discount code ever. Nobody has ever been fired because buying IBM. Nobody has ever been fired because they smashed stupidly a beautiful great linux project. |
Re: Discount Codes Being Sent Now
When quantities are limited, why not sell to the people that want to pay full retail? The people buying N810s must be happy enough with the available 2008 software to make their purchase decision, or don't mind waiting until more 2008 software becomes available.
The developers will get their N810s. I'm waiting. Personally I want to see Nokia make the most money on this platform as possible so that they will continue to release new models and improve the software infrastructure, for selfish reasons of course. :) Frank Quote:

I'm also anxiously awaiting the dev code becoming active. But you going off half-baked doesn't make you sound very sane to say the least. Nathan. |
Re: Discount Codes Being Sent Now
Well the lack and slowness of the codes is a tad frustrating, but what is more disturbing to me, is that they are pushing out these devices because people want them, but they are still not officially released, and some might argue running BETA code. It is not doing the platform any good to release a half baked device to a bunch of people because they have cash.
I truly believe they should have brought in the developers first, and made the device more consumer ready before release. This would truly help beginners and make a better overall experience for new end users, instead of turning them off. This problem is compunded by the fact that the BEST people available to confirm/deny/solve problems are waiting for a free device to troubleshoot. This leads to people not familiar with the platform, to make statements that are misleading or just plain wrong, which makes the whole platform look bad. It just seems to make sense to me to have the developers be the beta testers, not new people to the platform? Is this all a bad timing scenario, where marketing said PUSH it out for Christmas. The diehards know what they are buying, but the newbies need a fairly solid device to have a good experience. Diehards and developers will not make this platform last. Quality experiences for new users will, and they should be getting more a more mature device. As they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression. |

An other thing, don't forget that this discount code aren't provide only to developers but to bloggers too and other people. So i think they want to wait a bit to be sure of the stability to avoid a bad publicity.
A final os 2008 release i think. |

I think we (wanting it or not) are playing against Apple and, men it is embarassing. There is no official place where it has been said when the codes are going to be enabled and why did it toke so long. There is no official place where it has been said if the machinery is officialy selling or not. If it is only a preview thing. If there is an official launch party sometime in the future. No official (no extraofficial) why of the delay Nokia got, and no official (no extraofficial) calendar about the european deployment. Is it selling in Spain? Whas it a shop mistake it appeared in the shop? It is going to be selling next week or next february? No official expected date for Canola2. No reason given. I wanna see my team organized. And it is not right now. |
Re: Discount Codes Being Sent Now
My code is working at the Nokia shop Germany ... not now :( ;)
In which timezone can we expect the mail at 15th dec (2007), that the discount/developer code does work? Since this week I look every 15minutes in my mailbox, even at work. Thank you, keep your fingers crossed for tomorrow! |
